i just got the new musicians friend and i saw these guitars in there for wicked cheap. does anyone have a danelectro or knows anything about these things? whats the general consensus on danelectro?
-
I had one of the reissues from about 10 yrs. ago. It was pretty alright, I guess. Thin, easy playing neck. Trashy/trebly sound, but lacked any real punch. After about a year or so, the input jack shorted out. So it'd cut out when I was playing, and I'd have to beat on it until it flickered back to life.
I would recommend a Fender Mexican-made Telecaster for a solid cheap-o guitar. Although, I guess their not quite as cheap as the Danos.
-
they are garbage guitars. you are better off buying a 60's lipstick pick up and then installing it into a real guitar that will stay in tune. unless of course you are some vampire weekend sack dragon and want to be out of tune.
-
I've been using one of these Electro cheapos for a long time, you can hear it on the newest Okmoniks LP, its a fucking great guitar. Under $200, always stays in tune, can take a beating. I personally fucked up the input on mine by adding superglue, but I've had zero problems other than that. Before that I had a $700 Fender and it sounded bad in a bad way all the time. This thing sounds trashy, overdrives great and through something like a twin reverb it is the ultimate Chuck Berry defiling instrument.

I use a 90's reissue as my main guitar. It's the U3, I think. Double cutaway with three lipstick pick ups. My wife bought it new when they reissued them. I was playing a Gretsch solid body from the late 70's and Les Paul TV copy I made from scratch with a guitar wizard friend back in Wis-cunt-son.
I now play the Danelectro over both of those. I love the thin neck and the sound. I like a really treble heavy...almost shrill...sound...so the metal nut and lipstick pickups with a non-solid body is perfect. They only weigh a few lbs since it's basically hollow inside with some cardboard strips on their side to hold the structure. The down side is...they're not made to toss around/beat up, though not totally flimsy....and they feedback almost as easily as a semi-hollow body. I use a Sovtek MIG-50H MIDGET head with a 2x12 cabinet, and I was able to dial it in with little to no feedback. Took a lot of fuckin' around to do that, but I think it's great.

I agree...stays in tune better than most "sturdy" guitars I've had/played. An input jack is easy to fix...a few bucks and about a half hour's time is all. I still wouldn't beat it too much....maybe I'm being overly cautious though. I was using it with a Tube Screamer through one of those 2x10 70's Music Man combos that are like a twin, sort of. It sounded great until the amp fried.
-
loose input jack is a quick 2 minute fix. they stay in tune fine. i had a guitar for a couple years and passed it on to a friend, and amber still has the longhorn bass she got for christmas 8 years ago, i've played it on every recording i've done since, put a nice set of flatwounds on it, the sound and playability are great.
-
DO NOT USE SUPERGLUE TO ULTRA FIX IT.
-
it's a good guitar. However it's not built to last... The neck will eventually warp, cuz it's made of cheap wood.... But it's not an immediate problem... The sound on those is great.... I'm thinking about getting one...
-
yeah i figured for only 250 outta the catalog isn't too bad for a new guitar. i play one of those shitty peavy predators, it was given as a gift and i've been playing it for over a year. i just figured it was time to buy my own guitar but i'm so fucking broke. it's hard to find a good guitar for about 200-300 bucks.
-
ive had one for about 4 years. its falling apart and is held together by duct tape but still sounds fantastic!
-
yeah cheap necks can always be a problem but 8 years in with no adjustments and hundreds of hours of stage/recording use and our longhorn still has good inotation and holds its tune as good as it ever did. few years back joined a cover band, walked into the audition with the longhorn and my fender twin, the other guys had stacks and were kinda laughing at me, but not once i fired that fucker up and threw down some of my fretboard wizardry. kinda miss that sometimes, playing zep and hendrix songs until the wee hours, getting all fucked up... punk "musicians" suck;.
-
Those new Danos in Musicians Friend look real nice! Cool colors too.
But hey Tim. If you wanna track down something old and cheap lemme know, all my guitars were around $100. I'd be glad to help ya find something.

The only guitar I have is a Danelectro. Sounds and looks good.
-
i've had an old silvertone forever - basically the same thing as an electro. fucking great. easy to play. the action is fluid. played it at hundreds of punk shows and never had to retune it. the only thing i didnt like was the lipstick pick-up. so i removed it and replaced it with a humbucker and it has a nice deep, link wray rumble sound to it. i've played the electro reissues - both guitar and bass - and they played nice and no problems.
for people with small hands they are great. the necks are small and the action is easy. because of that and because they are inexpensive and reliable, they are a great starter guitar for teens.
-
I have a $200 Dan Electro U2 reissue that I bought in the early 00's. I don't really like how it sounds out of an amp - too trebly and "jangly" - but it sounds great if you play it without an amp. Don't care for acoustic guitars, but the hollow body of the U2 sounds louder than most electrics do sans electricity. Every song I've ever written has been with that guitar.
I also have a 1966 Melody Maker, and while it's better than the Dan Electro in almost every way, it doesn't sound as loud if you play it without an amp.
-
not a guitar...but I love how my longhorn bass is so light and easy to play. The only thing is that it likes to go out of tune after a couple of songs. It does get a little annoying cuz my Rickenbacker stays in tune for like, 3 years.
-
I have a dano single cutaway.
I love that guitar..trashy yet crisp sound.

My favorite guitar of all time is a Tesco Del Rey that I borrowed from a friend for about a year or so. I think he found it at a yard sale or pawn shop. It was loud, trashy, and trebly and the action was real nice. It didn't even go out of tune too much.
There's very little information about these guitars online and I've looked for one on eBay every now and again to no avail. Anyone know anything about 'em? I assume these were cheapo, department-store guitars akin to the Sears Silvertones, but fug if I know.
-
silvertone is a store brand, many of them were actually produced by the teisco factory. valco also made alot of neat 60s store branded stuff.
-
add an i. it's teisco.
i think damian bought one off glave and would sell it for next to nothin' if he's still got it.
-
Tell Damian I'm interested...
-
Gimme. I'll call 'im.

that would be killer, i don't need a new one it's more of a desire for a new one. so there's really no rush. i figure if i don't end up moving back down south then i'll buy one with my rebate check (that still hasn't fucking come yet!!)

I've been using one of these Electro cheapos for a long time, you can hear it on the newest Okmoniks LP, its a fucking great guitar.
are you gonna be playing your dano on tour? if so i'll have to check it out when you get to lafayette

yo man, i fyou still have that lipstick pickup laying around, and want rid of it, get at me. i need another one for a backup guitar at some point.

I've got an old Silvertone too. You can get some really raunchy sounds out of it but I've never gigged with it. Feels too flimsy. Sounds great recorded though. Those reish Danelectros are pretty rock solid though and the price is hard to beat...although if you look hard enough you can usually score an OG for about the same price. They are always 60 - 80 bucks or like 500 - 600.
Also just picked this up for 150 recently...fucking monstrosity of an axe.

I've got one of these. Here's why I'd recommend it
- It sounds awesome
- Its one of the only good cheaply priced guitars out there
- You can always add a telecaster, strat, paul, weirdo axe, but for $200 you are getting a real unique sound. all those other sounds are honestly pretty generic.
- masonite body has a really unique cool tone
- the tuners and neck are fine. Ive dropped mine twice and it plays fine and theres no loose stuff going on.
-
What about Squier 51's? There is one for sale in town here for $150. They look cool as hell but not sure about them. It looks like this:

I have a Mexy Fender Strat I've been playing for years but it want something else... for fun.

I'm also a huge fan of early 80's Squire stuff. they seem to be a somewhat hot item now as they were made of pretty much the same wood and hardware as the regular Fenders around that time. I have an 83 Squire Bullet Bass that's pretty rock solid. Also I see Squire is doing Jazzmasters right now...saw one at Guitar Center for like 200 and change. Also So Cow had one when he played here in NYC. Cool lookin guitar and sounds pretty rad. Big huge fat pickups. The Nice Price!!!
-
My brother has that exact Squire '51. Never played it, but it sounded pretty cool. For $150 you really can't go wrong.
-
so cow and his beautiful danelectro reissue! i actually have the same one in that puke green color. it sounds real round clean.

oh wait a minute, i think thats the og or perhaps a 90's one. whoops.
-
DANELECTRO FUCKING RULES!
-
Had a Danelectro U2 for years. Got it for 80 bucks. Surprisingly, if you plug this into a stack, it nails this awesome first Ramones-LP buzzsaw tone. Those lipstick pick ups are killer. Ditched it years ago, but miss it.

Another example of a company buying a name with no relationship to the original manufacturer. Weren't these akin to Silvertones and the guitar formerly associated with Jack Oblivian? The old ones were made in the US of materials that doubled for some of the bathroom and kitchen products sold in the Sears catalog.
My friend bought a Murph guitar at a swap meet for around the $100 mark. Years later, he took the pickguard off and found a hidden bag of crystal meth underneath. I mentioned that people pawn guitars for drugs. The seller had the whole concept backwards.
