Title: Live Shows
Post by: wounded on July 28, 2008, 11:17:10 AM
I haven't seen Jay perform live yet, but am extremely anxious for tomorrow night in S.F.  I just picked up Singles 06-07 today and it sounds great.  Otherwise, I've been very into Blood Visions, the ep's, and all the singles so far released on Matador.

What can I expect for length of set?
Will it include any of these new singles?
Is the pace always blistering fast (consistent with the dvd/pitchfork.tv)?

If there are any reviews from fans who were at Pitchfork Festival or any shows on this recent tour, please provide a link.

Thank you.

1. Shorter than my penis.
2. Plenty of 14 year old - and 35 year old + singles at the show.
3. You will get blistered.

You can expect a very bad and boring show. It won't be anything like the records. All melodies have been zapped from the live set in favor of sloppy speed. I wouldn't even go if I were you. I've already made the mistake twice.

If the last tour with The Black Keys is any indication, I would expect a short, fast set that included new material.  Who knows?

Right.  I heard about his support performance for The Black Keys, which is why I hoped somebody had seen a recent headlining gig.

Here's to hoping that ADM is hung like a yack.

good looking girls, crowded house, lot of stupid idiots you wanna punch in the face (and if you dont, jay does) & the songs wont really sound like they do on record cos they play so fast/simply.

but definitely go anyway if you can get in. i would.

Expect lots of hot chicks, lots of lookie loos/weekend rockers.....regarding the set, the songs are pretty much ruined by the extreme speed which kills the melodies and dynamics.  pretty short set too and kinda metallic/modern rock soundin in spots.

Just keep drinkin, that's what i did.

Been once (last October) and was a little disappointed, though I might've caught an off night.  A few of my friends who have seen him multiple times, including people who were at the same show as me, say other shows have been much better.

i tarveled 40+ hours (with a boat) to sweden to see it so it would be really dumb for me to say "dont bother to go, its not worth it" if its in your home town. of fucking course you go.

I really want to thank you guys for lowering my expectations.  That said, I was pretty much floored by how awesome the show was last night.  I mean, I understand the perspective of songs feeling rushed and therefore maybe not as enjoyable, if you were hoping for a different experience or something.  But I gotta say, once settled into what was happening, I found myself really spazzing the fuck out to an amazing set of songs.

It really wasn't until the 3rd or 4th track in: Oh, It's Such A Shame.  About halfway through it clicked and I was like ohhh fuck i get this! and perhaps credit is really due to the song itself and how it's still rockin while slower on Singles 06-07, a favorite of mine on BV, but totally compatible with the furious pace that it's being played live.  Once that hit home, I was set-up to hang in and get off on the rest of the set.

I'm pretty sure the one that followed was Waiting for Something which just fucking blew me away.  And I wasn't alone b/c by that time the pit had formed nicely and kids were throwin down.

Other notable highlights: My Shadow, Not a Substitute, Nightmares, Turning Blue, See/Saw, Always Wanting More, Let It All Go (+ the ending/interlude segue of noisy looping insanity for a couple minutes while we waited), and Jay going off at the end of Death Is Forming (another one of my favorites off of BV and when it started I sorta wished it was being played at recorded speed until the end when he went nuts and I was glad).

I guess I just appreciate the testament to these songs is their ability to withstand a fury of two to three times normalcy.  All in all it had to be 45 minutes or so of sick shit.  I mean come on.  That guitar work alone.

Somebody really needs to record these gigs.  But I'd really just love a set-list if anyone has it.

Anyway, afterwards I got to tell the bassist (Billy?) that he sounded amazing while I picked up the See/Saw and Painted Shut singles plus a t-shirt for 25 clams.

Fucking awesome show.  As I write this I'm wondering if it was actually as good as it is in my head today, but goddamn I'm glad I went.

I really enjoyed the Jay portion @ the Independent. It was 30 mins high energy rock n roll. Larger venue's are not my fav, but this worked out good. It was very much like an arena show. There was fog, lightshow and moshers. I say A++ to Reatard.

also picked up the TERROR VISIONS single.... holy shit in 2 minutes.

I've seen, recorded and consequently listened to live Jay far more than his records, so the effect is particularly opposite for me.  I'm used to and like the live sound, and these records put out afterwards are like neat little surreal versions.

yeah thanks.  it came out pretty well considering people were bouncing everywhere.

so i'm trying to think of another band/artist that has presented songs in three different speeds like this and am coming up blank.

singles they're medium to fast
blood visions they're fast
live they're flying

i don't know.  seems pretty unique to me.
Title: Re: Live Shows

Yeah, Ramones got faster as they went along. Especially after CJ joined. Good call!
Title: Re: Live Shows
Post by: goneoffdatlean on July 31, 2008, 10:51:57 AM
Faster is not always better...that Ramones clip sounded like guano.  Super fast works for certain stuff, mainly HC...usually playing ultra-fast just kills melodies and any kind of dynamics a song has....all in favor for pure velocity.

Velocity doesn't equal ferocity.

word on the street is that termbo's very own popcon bought five jay reatard t-shirts at last night's show--dude layered himself w/ the set, started a mosh pit and pogo'd in place during an exquisitely frenetic rendition of "don't let him come back".

truth?

Not only that, I then went home and fell asleep masturbating to the image of the bass player's hair.

I just saw him live july 17th or so and he did pretty good. My only complaint is that in some songs like blood visions he half huffed out the words, also the vocals could have been louder. I loved how he ended the set with 10 seconds of feedback.

Seen him once and it was god awful, just doesn't seem like he even wants to be there. Seems like he just wants to play as fast as possible then get paid. After seeing live footage and hearing all the crazy stories about the Reatards it was the most dissapointing thing I have ever seen. And of course, he's a total pussy now, if you touch him on stage expect to get hit in the face, don't pay attention to the fact he was in the Reatards and would do himself more bodily harm than anyone in the audience could. Expect a much more bloated, much faster, much more DISSAPOINTING, and much more "indie" rock version of the lead singer of the Reatards.

touching as in some guy getting pushed by the crowd and breaking Jay Reatard's guitar cable on accident, then getting a flying V right in his neck. if you're in a punk band maybe you should expect to have shit go wrong. now if someone threw a swing at him, i can see why he'd want to fight, but an accident? come on.
