i cant imagine whats gonna give some people the edge here, except maybe email-platform server speed? they oughta give people an hour to get their email in, then conduct a random drawing at 4pm for the 500 pre-order copies.
Title: Re: #5
Post by: CollectorScum on August 11, 2008, 10:48:40 AM
This seems really convoluted and I don't really see how it minimizes traffic to the site.  Plus my matador account is under an alias address, like matador@my-domain.com.  I can't actually send mail from it.  So I guess I'm either making a new account or changing my address on record with them.
Title: Re: #5
Post by: nicknap on August 11, 2008, 11:09:47 AM
this really won't change anything.  This pre order will still be a mess.

hey its not "dumb when (insert band name here) does limited pressings why is this any different ?

Because a label that can press enough records is doing such limited runs and not keeping it in print until that LP is coming out, whatevs. hope i get another copy to FLIP, I like turning shit into money.

it wasn't the label's idea to do the limited pressing.

It was my idea to do the records this limited .At the time my fan base was really limited and well it has grown and thats outta my control .  I really just wanted to make some singles for real fans to get and enjoy and things just got outta control with how many people actually want these singles . Now keep in mind if people that "really" wanted the records were the only people logging in to buy these it would have went a lot smoother. But unfortunately people like Vinnie are clogging up the system wanting to "flip" these records for a pathetic profit (by the way Vinnie way to go  man $36.00 what are you gonna do with all that money !!) Its not a conspiracy folks its plain and simple I have always made limited records and now more people want them.I do on the other hand have a stack of free rot shit singles for anyone that feels left out. Any takers ? It's such a great record !!

I'll take a free rot shit single

and really the people who are bitching about not being able to get these singles what the hell are you bitching about....if you hate the shit quit buying it...you're your own worst enemy

dumbness abounds

Theres no one we can blame. It just sucks to try and get on the site but it won't load because so many people are overloading the server. Then a week later you see a ton of copies on ebay.

I thought limited pressings were for limited fan bases or due to limited expenses.  Obviously that ain't the case.

this is the case.  despite what Mike Sniper likes to think about 80's singles clubs and other off-kilter weird examples.  hahaha!  mike im just playin, i have to always fuck with you about pressing shit now.

Title: Re: #5
Post by: FDH records on August 11, 2008, 05:12:29 PM
I think it was a good idea. I just hate to see some of the old school loyal fans having such a hard times getting some of the singles. Thats why I only sell the copies I get in the distro to people that I know are not gonna run to e-bay with them. I mean if us record nerds cant look out for each other who the fuck is gonna?
Title: Re: #5
Post by: Mark Pesci on August 11, 2008, 06:26:54 PM
I like the records.  I don't care about the ltd quantities.  I just think Matador's solutions to the web problem are ridiculous.  Admittedly, I don't have any better ideas.

I'm still just mad that I can't preorder and have to call up my friends today to ask them to set up an account for me so I can get it.  And I think the power might still be out at work tomorrow so I have to go to the skate shop across the street (yo, jay - Lyndsey says hi).

just more as a joke, i really wanna see Matador put up a test pressing on ebay.  Just to see how completely nuts some people are.  I guarantee it would break $500.  Would not be surprised if it got to like $800 or more either.  people are nuts.  thats why they're NUTS!

Co-signed. So does Matador.
Title: Re: #5
Post by: qmass on August 12, 2008, 09:59:08 AM
So, if I'm getting this straight:

1. 3pm EST, matador will reveal an email address on preorder.matadorrecords.com (http://preorder.matadorrecords.com)

2. Send an email to that using the email you have a matador account with

3. Then, when you log in within the hour (??), a link will show up in the Matador store that will allow you to purchase the record. Wont the site be slow as hell again with people trying to log in to see if the link appears?

4. If you (win?), wait a week for the record to come to you in the mail

5. $$$$$

6. Buy some rot shit singles.

This email confirms that you will be able to purchase the 5th Jay Reatard single.

Please give us about 30 minutes for the servers to get back up to speed so we can dump in your email address. After that, you should be able to log in to your Matador account and buy 1 7" whenever you want.
Thanks for participating in this and we hope you enjoy your record.

Also if this is still a 900 press, does that mean stores get the other 800?

Not quite, there's the UK, Canada, Jay's copies, Staff copies and and handful of other odds and ends.  After all of that we've got less than 500 for our stores.

dave, do you know if fingerprints in long beach will be getting any copies of #5? they did get copies of #3 but (as far as info i was able to gather) they did not get copies of #4. thanks for the info in advance.

Yeah, I figured since the release date was the 19th, that was the date these would go on sale...since all the other "pre-orders" weren't really "pre-orders." Guess I didn't read the instructions carefully.

Oh well.

"Road to Ruin" I bought after...so it was going to ride shotgun no matter what.

fucking local store pulled same shit mentioned elsewhere on this board.

called earlier today, around 2pm. they had a copy in stock. asked if they would hold it for me, said yeah, no problem, said it was $7.99.

i go in, go to the counter, the girl says 'yeah, i'm sorry i told you that it was $7.99. the owner really wanted to keep it for himself but is willing to sell it, so now the price is $24.99. wtf?!?!?!?

i look at her. she seems kinda sorry for being put in such an awkward situation. i buy it anyway, BUT THAT IS SOME FUCKKKKKKING BULLSHIT RIGHT THERE. whatever.

Instead, you taught him an important lesson: that kinda thing is acceptable behavior.

Obviously the kind of storeowner who'd do anything to make a quick buck. Gandhi probably would've gently pointed out the error of his ways and walked out without buying the stupid record. Of course the problem is that the storeowner would've sold it to the next idiot in five minutes, and then Gandhi's important lesson would've been wasted, why not just get it over with and buy it yourself. What a dilemma.

Kevin, your solution raises some interesting questions. I take it you mean resorting to violence is acceptable behavior with these kinds of problems? I guess in this case you advocate the use of violence as a means to an end, i.e. beat the storeowner to teach him to never again ask inflated prices in his store? Or do you just think that this guy should be punished for his unacceptable behavior (breaking a deal he'd already made), in that case I'm also interested in how you think the punishment should be measured out, for example what would it take for you to advocate burning down the damn store instead of just beating him up? What do you hope to achieve? It's all so confusing.

I woulda walked out of that place and never gone there again.  I wouldn't have bothered to speak to the owner, as someone that brazenly slimy isn't gonna be reasoned with.  I would've just left and regarded the store as SARS from there on out.  Personally, I'd rather pay a little more on ebay or just go without the record than reward someone who treats me like shit.

Please tell us the store.  If I'm ever in your city, I want to know where not to go.

Looks like the only way for me to complete this singles club business is to get lucky and get the last one, throw it up on ebay immediately and get a stupid amount of money, wait a month for prices to drop a bit, and then get 5 and 6.

Here's another great record store story: I called the Reckless Records in the Loop on Sunday, they said they'd hold a copy for me to pick up on Tuesday. Ten minutes later they call me back and say it's a no-go. They actually aren't getting copies. Mmm-Hmm.

All three Chicago Reckless stores did get copies, but not many.  Perhaps the person on the phone spoke to soon and the copies were already all spoken for?  Or perhaps they just thought they were not getting any.  I'd say check again just to be certain.

Whatever. I know a lot of you will disagree with me and I know this is not "punk", but I don't see any problem with selling something for "the going price."  If I had a pair of boots that I could sell at Buffalo Exchange for ten bucks or sell on Ebay for 100, it would be retarded of me not to put them on Ebay.  It's not his fault that you idiots are willing to pay $50 for this record, and as long as people are willing to pay that, I see no problem with selling something at that price.  We live in a world where we have to have money to do simple things like eat and pay rent, and if other people have extra money to throw away on stupid shit, I see no problem with taking it.

The only problem I have with this situation is that the dude retracted on a verbal contract. That's a shitty move.
Title: Re: #5
Post by: t--- on August 21, 2008, 10:37:42 AM
I think Matador should just put the rest of the singles directly on ebay and see how much rolls in.  Then they could give the extra money to some young poor bands so they are able to tour.  Either that or they should use it to throw some elaborate party where there are water fountains made of booze and drug dispensers in the bathrooms.

I called all three stores. No luck. My guess is that they did run out of available copies, and then just decided to lie about it. Why else would they say "yup, we're gettin' 'em. Yup, we'll hold one for ya" in the first place? The dude knew they were coming in.

Well, I'm off to soulseek to see whether or not this record is even worth the trouble to acquire.

So anyway, has anybody actually listened to this thing? Because it may just be the best one of the bunch. "Trapped Here" is a downright beautiful song. The small pressing of records like this really hits home when the records are actually really great.

I totally agree.  Boo Berry is GOOOD!  Matter of fact the General Mills shirt club was pretty awesome too.  I never sent in my coupons and $5.  I could never decide if I wanted Frankenberry or Boo Berry.  Count Chocula is a fag so that was easy.  I mean, he's alright I guess, but he's played and looks like dracula so who cares.  "whoa a chocolate vampire" big deal.  His cereal is tasty tho.  Boo Berry is the man.  He has boat windows for eyes.  Frankenberry has a tooth for a head.  Both rulin.

Only within the Bay Area...any further and I would smoke all the crack just trying to get there...

I just want to point out that I occasionally frequent this store in Lawrence and they ALWAYS have the latest eBay craze for cover price, months later:

Purchases in April of THIS year:

Eat Skull's 1st 7" $5
Wooden Shjips red 45 with the long boring songs: $6
All jim retardo's Goner stuff: $4 + something.

Not only do I buy doubles for people on this very board when there, but I have been LECTURED for it as they anti-eBay, in general.  Just sayin'.  And they probably will use the money to buy more jim retardo records.  But yeah, it sucks the employees got the other two.

Love Garden are straight up folks and I believe their spiel about buying copies of the comp for folks w/the proceeds.  As far as employees getting the records goes... Why else would you work in a record store if not to get a better line on the records you want?

If anyone from Matador is still reading this please take note (or explain to me).  Why do more copies go to distros than to those who fairly order from website?  It is ridiculous as more and more of these distros sell their copies on ebay (or their actual distro) for more than actual price.

because matador are douchebag scum who believe the ebay frenzy helps their hype machine..and guess what? it does. if they just sold them all on their website for a fair price instead of shipping them out to scumbag record store owners what fun would that be?

To my mind, he most ridiculous aspect of this whole endeavor is all the whining that surrounds it.  Get a grip, people.  Matador can do whatever the fuck they want.  And despite the systemic flaws, their strategy does have an ethical dimension: they are sharing profits with actual brick-and-mortar record stores (and distros) which, as you may have noticed, are going bankrupt left and right all over the country due to the rise of the mp3 format, etc.  Yeah, some stores are selling 'em on eBay, which may (or may not) defeat the purpose, but if there's a moral defect there, it's with the stores, not Matador.  They can't control what they do with the copies they send 'em.

Either way, you could argue all day over the matter, but when it comes down to it, the central point is that, again, Matador/Jay can do whatever they want.  And besides, the only reason anyone even cares enough to complain about it is that they are so limited.  If they pressed 5000 copies of each, I'll bet half the people bitchin' about not having one wouldn't have even bothered to buy them yet.  Whatever.  I'm prematurely drunk.  I'm goin' to a party.

no douchebag, all the people bitching about not getting one would have gotten one. matador and reatard have a responsibility to serve the public to the best of their ability. limited edition? sorry dingleberry, that option was thrown out the door once your blud visions got so much acclaim. everything after it has been a big scam. pressing limited crap is stupid after you have gotten so "big".

I used to find this Jay Reatard Matador singles schtick to be irritating, but I've come around to finding it funny.  I think it was the single #4 clusterfuck that turned me around.

Now I have no idea what Jay was thinking when he decided to do this, but this singles series strikes me as a witty parody of the independent punk label business model.

"Only 500 copies of the new Jizz Burritos 7"!  First 100 on semen-white vinyl!"  That sorta thing.

And all that stuff is cool with me, and I understand why labels do it.  Nuttin' wrong with some salesmanship to get people exposed to a good record (and also, to not end up sitting on boxes of unsold copies of the thing.)  But it's also something that's ripe for parody.  EVERYTHING could stand to be goofed on a bit.  Me, you, everything.

Record collectors are kinda goofy.  I relate to them (and I am one, to an extent--I like singles and vinyl, but have no "original pressing" fetish or sense of urgency when it comes to getting in on that limited color vinyl segment of the pressing), but they're goofy.  And I'm sure Mr. Reatard deals with these types a lot.  He might be SICK OF THEM.  To start up a singles series where these people have to struggle and grovel and go out of their way to get these records, with the odds looking worse with each new release, strikes me as hilarious revenge.  This is real contempt-for-the-audience stuff (and, as someone who hates people, I get kick out of that sort of thing.  Also, I'm a cool customer and I don't need my ass kissed.  As long as I enjoy the music, I'm dandy.)

I mean, all of these songs are gonna be available on an LP in October to just about anyone in the world with $15 or so to spend and a decent record store near them (or the ability to go on the internet).  So ONLY fetishist collectors are the ones irritated by this singles series.

OR maybe it just struck him as an interesting way to get publicity.  I don't know...
