Title: Matador Singles LP
Post by: mike sniper on October 01, 2008, 04:30:46 PM
So, I'm listening to these songs for the first time as an LP and enjoying it. It seems like a logical progression from Blood Visions-->Songs on ITR Singles Collection-->This.

I can't really see why people who liked "Blood Visions" would not like this, but to each his own I suppose.

yeah, not really as bad as people are saying. works well as an lp. scored the gonerfest ed.

Yea I still have yet to grab the Gonerfest version keeping my ears to the ground for someone to trade one from (Im willing to trade good stuff for it). Regardless I think people are way to hard on the new stuff. Sure its a step forward but if Jay record Blood visions part 2 people would bitch that everything sounds the same..

Yeah I hear people complaining about that too but Jay Reatard writes such good songs no matter what kind of sound there going with, there all hits in my book.

i love some songs (an ugly death is my fav of the bunch, also always wanting more and trapped here), but not all of them are at the same level for me

Really?  All but a couple of the songs seem really trite and manufactured.

Lyrical content is approaching pissed off 9th grader level, not that that's always a bad thing, but it is here.  I'll just look forward to the next real album.

Is this readily available or limited? Local store saved me a copy because they said they were only getting 2 in. Is this worth anything?

We are waiting for more LPs to be pressed, but the version on hold for you is the standard black vinyl, unlimited edition.

i have a clear copy and if that makes you mad cause you don't,.. you're retarded, the real kind of retarded.

ok, the fact that its not blood visions 2 i like.  i really like a lot of the songs, but not the last three with with bongos and shit.  ughh,... the end of the record makes me want to die in my sleep.  and he uses the c-word (cunt) and not that i'm anti vulgar, but like it was said earlier in the thread, that really is 9th grade lyrical content.   the whole singles sham, unnecessary.  i, and maybe many others, would have been just happy with this going straight to lp.

oh, and i still have issues with the daddy issues song.  i'm starting to hate what i used to dig.  still an ok album.

JAY REATARD = VIVIAN GIRLS = NOT WORTH THE HYPE!  i'd rather be punched by a VG.

i was pretty disappointed with the songs after all the bullshit just to get them. It really did keep me from trying to find 5 and 6 but at this point i'll be happy with the LP.

i haven't given up yet because Jay consistently has been one of my favorite artists in just about every sub genre of punk music. i just hope the song quality gets back to where it was.

and was it just me or did the recordings on the singles sound quick? Like they were pushed out in a hurry?

I like the singles alot, not as good as Blood Visions but still pretty solid.

Well, I suppose it's up to taste. I like a lot of indierockish pop stuff, and it's definately more like than than Blood Visions, but that seemed thye direction he was going, judging from the Goner single (Go Betweens cover!)

Title: Re: Matador Singles LP
Post by: MAD TWATTER on October 04, 2008, 03:41:31 PM
yeah, was gonna reference go-betweens myself. the final song (lp exclusive) reminds of that sorta shit. i guess that is what he is going for.  not so into "you were sleeping" but i think the rest are fine. songs sound better on the replay

and yea. works surprisingly well as an lp. production is consistant across the board. almost to the point where it was an lp just broken into singles.

I really like the LP.  I even liked his version of that Beck song.  Hes a really good song writer and think his "commercial appeal" is through the roof.  Im really interested to hear the real matador LP.  THe cunt line definitely was ugh worthy though

does an 8.4 on pitchfork mean that it is a 'Must Buy' ?!?! or is that a 'Recommended Buy' ????

just got some into my distro. I like it alot more as a LP then a bunch of singles. Regardless I am selling them for 17 bucks postage in the USA (think I might have the best price going). If you need one drop me a pm and I will let you know how to send payment.

Singles 08 is a dissapointment if you compare it to Blood Visions. Its sounds like Jay is running out of ideas, or trying to take the edge/weirdness/fierceness out of his songs. See Saw is ok, but a lot of it sounds watered down somehow.

I wanna hear this record. I wasn't quite as into the singles I heard as they were coming out, but I think it may have been colored by the expectations I had going into it. I'm interested in hearing how they sound and flow as an album because I'm really into the stuff that he seems to be drawing inspiration from more recently and everything he's done up to this point solo I've listened to a ridiculous amount.

Kevin, you should definitely check it out... after seeing him play almost every night for two weeks in Australia and hearing some of his newer songs, I think his new shit is gonna kill.

Oprah of garage rock, maybe.

It's true though, your weight is constantly shifting. Unlike Oprah, you look just as sexcellent when you're "husky" as you do when you're trim.

that being said, when being fitted for my bar mitzvah suit, the tailor said i needed a portly jacket...haven't recovered since.  might explain my habitual self loathing and consequent drug abuse.
