Title: Best band while baked?
Post by: SteveBeat on February 22, 2006, 04:38:26 PM
I listen to lots of music when high, and I really love pschye and stoner-rock, but I must say, Reigning Sound's last live joint is treating me right when it's cranked today.  Gimme your favorite smokin' records... I will drop mine tomorrow.

Neil Young's Zuma at least once a week. Singing "Barstool Blues" at the top of your lungs when you're stoned and have house to yourself is fun.

When I am baking I like to listen to something like Nat King Cole. Though when I am kneeding dough, I find Discharge most liking to my ears.

Midnite Snake
Gris Gris, Mirrors, any Greg Ashley project
Black Lips last two LP's
Don Caballero "American Don"
Paul Newman "Machine Is Not Broken"
Any Will Oldham project
The Band - anything

Stoner rock/doom I dig on:
Sleep
Bongzilla
Cavity
Grief
Corrupted
Electric Wizard
Sunn O)))
Pentagram

And of course Sabbath, but they are in a category all their own.

This is all I can think of right now.  I will post more.

After a recent experience I'm convinced marijuana is a terrible, terrible drug. I don't think I ever want to smoke it again in my life. Seriously. The reason is simple. When I passed out at that party in Milwaukee a few weekends ago, I think it was the wind I hawked with RFA that sent me over the edge and made me pass out, thereby causing me to miss a good five hours or so of drinking I had left - not to mention the rest of the show. Any drug that cuts into something as important as my beer intake can be nothing but bad news as far as I'm concerned!!!

That being said, the Catholic Boys and A-Frames were both awesome to watch stoned at Richard's wedding. Triple Six Mafia is also good for a laugh when high.

All bands are WAAAAAY better live when watching them stoned. That's a fact. For records, it really depends what sort of mood I'm in.

Cocaine, when used intraveinously provides by far the most intense alteration of audio ever. Apparantly the same can be found through serious freebasing, but I fished out before that really happened and had a seizure. It's like a really otherwordly reverb or echo chamber. It almost sounds digital. They call it a bellringer. Can't really explain it, but that was my main attraction to coke.

I smoke a lot of hawkwind, so my answer is "any record on the table." Steve, you made the same mistake Cecil has made the last few times I've seen him - don't get shit-faced drunk and then smoke weed. Bad, bad idea, even for experienced smokers. Do one or the other, or drink lightly and smoke.

One time I smoked two blunts and everyone left my house at 4 PM on a Saturday.  I was sitting there and listening to records and I put on Don Caballero (who have one guy playing like twelve guitar parts at once).  I started trying to pick the guitar parts apart in my head and then I freaked out.  I had to crawl to my room from the living room and climb in to bed and then I passed out and I wasted the whole day.

Everything really

Totally. Now acid/shrooms, that's a whole different deal. I was listening to Foetus with college roomates many centuries back while shrooming, and my buddy Matt said (during "I'll See You in Poland, Baby") that the silver Coors cans we were drinking outta shimmered in the light in a neat-o slash cool kinda way, so I concentrated really hard to no avail, until in a flash I felt like I'd left my body and conked into the can and took up the terrifying space around the room and Foetus was making everything deeply horrifying and I struggled into my room and turned off the stereo and put on Spacemen 3, which brought me back to equallibrium, or however you spell it. Whew! The guys thought I was a total fag!

S3 was my favorite trip music. I went to a midnight screening of the Doors movie (on acid) with some pals around the same time as thuh abuv, and we laughed at how bad it was the whole time outside of the brief Warhol/VU segment, which at least had good music and an actual freak onscreen. My buddy Scott was throwing peanuts at me, and I didn't know he was in there and it freaked me out a bit. All kinds of hippies were blowing bubbles (no lie) and prancing and smelling horrible. We wanted to kill them all. It's like, hey, we're on acid, too, but we're not prancing about like a buncha faggots and pretending that Morrison was anything more than another self-important delusional douche who spouted worse poetry than the bubblehippies. The whole of the (packed) theatre gave the film an ovation, and we booed like mad. Bad vibes, man. Then we listened to the Tar Babies and all was well. Fuck hippies. Drugs rule.

Yeah, you can find at least the "Fire" single anywhere for really cheap, and it's totally worth it. Everyone's heard "Fire" at some point, but actually listen closely to the fucker - it's nuts!

A few years ago a bunch of us were all on acid and I walked into my friends room and two of them were listening to my Big Star tape I'd had with me. It was the first two LPs with a highlights of the 3rd stuck on the end to fill up the tape. They said they'd not heard big star before and said they were thoroughly enjoying it, anyway I went back to the living room to watch TV but told them to turn the tape off before 'Holocaust' came on as it was too depressing to listen to on acid. They said they would. About an hour later, I went back in and they were playing an Andy Williams LP at 45 and looking weirded out. "We listened to Holocaust" they said. The Andy Williams LP played at 45 was the only thing they could think of playing to bring them back.

I listen to pretty much anything stoned. Lately it's been the new Evil Army. Steve, Saturday night was part of your wind training. Don't feel too bad though. I smoked some super killer stuff that Tony Sagger had. Mine paled in comparison. Needless to say I was a complete wreck for a little while. Out of nowhere though, I sprung back into action when Angry Angles started.

Other quality stoning stuff.

The Rebel
Thin Lizzy
Stooges
Hawkwind

Bonus points go to Paul for mentioning Arthur Brown.  That whole album is wicked good!  Also good is the coupla singles he did before that.  And the stuff he did with the band Kingdom Come (not the 80's metal band or whatever) is actually damn good. It's 70's space-prog stuff...

The first time I heard that song I was totally expecting something WAAAAY different when it kicked in. It's pretty hillarious.

I've smoked hawkwind sparingly over the years.  It's usually when I'm drunk, but I last longer than Lastname.  I've also smoked quite a bit at work, because I work with total stoners.

I've never done acid, shrooms, mescaline, excstasy, peyote or anything like that...

Not a song lyric. A mere factual statement.  I have mentioned the leeches in a song, but they are the ones doing the licking.

I'd lick a leech over a nightcrawler any day. I'd also fish with a leech over a nightcrawler any day.  If it was my choice I'd fish with only leeches, but they are a lot more expensive than other forms of live bait, so sometimes I slum with crawlers and minnows.

Please explain the leeches job. I need to know more.

This was in college.  Leeches are used in biology labs because their neural connective tissue is similar to humans'.  The scientists would yank their "spinal cord" out of them and then zap it with electricity.  I had to change their water in the tanks, feed them (with warmed up to human body temp. cow blood put into cow intestines and sewed up on the ends, like a blood sausage) and make lab solutions, etc.

I loved this job because no one would ever talk to me - the leech area was in a cooled room and it was quiet and tranquil.  I would take glass pipettes and use them as one-hitters which were perfect for the fuzzy "hero-weed" my roommate who came from Hawaii would bring to us after the holidays each year.

Good times.  I also worked in an axolotl lab.  Axolotls are mud puppies that live their entire lives as embryos...

That sounds pretty cool for a college job. Axolotls are the ones with their gills on the outside, right? We used to catch em accidentally once in a while while fishing.

I'm so far removed from the twistedness of it all at this point.

I used to find baby leeches stuck on me later in the day after working.  You can't feel them because they have pain killer in their saliva.  They also have anticoagulant, so you bleed freely.  Amazing little guys.

Yeah, I think that's right.  There is a website devoted to them out there somewhere.  We fed them warmed up soft dogfood.  They were ravenous all the time.  They'd get a hold of your finger, but they don't really have teeth, so it didn't hurt much.

I wish it was 30$ a jar, instead it's thirty dollars for a tiny little thing that'll get you about ten trips maybe. You don't want it to last longer than ten minutes, trust me. Anyway, even after that ten minutes you're babbling about the shit non-stop for the next hour and most people are so radically impacted by it that they'll spend at least the next week talking about it to everyone and anyone.

thought i would bump this...

i've had magical, mind-melting experiences with the following records.  (i've had great experiences with other records too, but for some reason my sessions with these records have stuck with me for a long time):

black dice - "creature comforts" - after a bowl of kind bud, the album ceased to be a bleepy, disappointing followup to "beaches and canyons" and was transformed into a singular, magical album that i still love to this day.  "night flight" is a mindfuck.  i remember it was around 5pm in july or august and extremely sunny.  i was sitting next to my west-facing window with the blinds mostly shut.  the sun made the blinds glow a brilliant, almost blinding yellow-white, adding a psychedelic shimmer to the beautiful sounds.  i had a very clear vision of the record as punk-rock xenakis or something and it ruled.

john coltrane - "interstellar space" - i'd always dug free jazz, but had always found this album more "intriguing" than listenable.  that changed with a few heady bong rips.  the record consists wholly of planetary-themed improvisations by the duo of coltrane and drummer rashied ali.  it all congealed for me like a Magic Eye poster and blew my mind.  i stared at my stereo, mouth agape, for the duration of the album.  i was actually listening to stolen mp3s of the album, but the next week i happened to find a mint vinyl copy of it at electric fetus in minneapolis for like $9 and it is a treasured part of my collection to this day.

yellow swans - "psychic secession"
- i had just bought a car with a pretty fearsome factory audio system, so i decided to get blazed and take it out for a spin with this CD.  it was approaching dusk on an unseasonably warm saturday in october.  a storm was brewing, but the precipitation had not started - just a shitload of lightning overhead.  i enjoy getting stoned and driving around in terrifying neighborhoods, so i did that on this evening.  this record, particularly on the title track, has eardrum-shredding treble but balances it with nice bass kicks and it fucking ruled on this night.  my heart was racing from the bud, music, and scary-ass people walking around (what is it about impending bad weather that brings out all the freaks walking in the street?).  it wasn't a life-changing experience, but it was a memorable one - i was in a state of terrified, ecstatic bliss for about 30 minutes.

the hospitals - "hairdryer peace" - this is a recent one for me.  i had heard of this record but didn't really pay any mind to it until i stumbled upon a handful of "this is an amazing record, an instant-classic" type reviews one afternoon.  my internet hunting revealed that the record was long sold-out.  fortuitously, as these things sometimes go, i was at love garden in lawrence, kansas the next day and, lo and behold, they still had a new copy in the racks.  i put it on and sparked a huge, fresh bowl.  the record was going well, i was nice and baked, good times, but when that infamous freakout at the end of "animals act natural" hit, my face exploded.  i was absolutely blasting the record on my new speakers with the windows open and it was just amazing.  i still love the record, but it has never hit me like this again.

windy and carl - "consciousness" - this was actually a salvia divornum trip.  my college roommate and i ordered salvia online and decided to do it on a beautiful spring friday afternoon after class.  we packed a huge bowl of it in my ice bong.  after a few very deep, very harsh hits, we were like "fuck, this shit is bunk."  five seconds later, my roommate stands up from his chair and emits an unbridled primal shriek, like his fucking soul just left his body, and he collapsed to the ground.  i thought he was just joking and i was like "whatever dude, fuck you" then, a few seconds later, i felt like my body weighed 1,000 pounds and i shrunk onto a futon, somehow having the werewithal to hit "play" on the stereo remote.  this CD happened to be in the chamber.  what followed was a incredibly vivid, profound trip into my childhood on a sea of sound and mind-boggling visuals and tactile hallucinations.  i remember that the blanket on the futon felt like it was made of jagged concrete, but in a very pleasurable way.  it was probably the most profound psychedelic experience of my life, and this record was a brilliant aural and tactile accompaniment to it.

I smoke at least a blunt a day. Sometimes followed by a few bong rips.  Its a end of the day thing. After work a bit of weed and some records makes life ok again.  Here are some of my favorite bands to listen to while smoking.

Acid Mothers Temple
Boris (not the metal stuff the noise stuff)
Deerhunter
King Tubby
the Lollipopshop
Lunch With Beardo (all the mixing work is done while as stoned as possible)
The Raincoats
Slowdive
13th floor elevators
Sunn o)))
TV personalities
Tides

I really am quite proud of the Lunch With Beardo "Surrealistic Picnic" CD I did a few years back. I have had alot of folks tell me its perfect stoner stuff. If anyone wants a copy of it I would be happy to give you one if you pay shipping cause its in my opinion great noise to get stoned and get lost in. I still have 500 CDs in my closet and would rather people hear it. Or if anyone orders anything from FDH I will just toss it in as a free item upon request.

I like soul records when I am baked a lot. The Marvellettes are good. I also have the Otis Redding live record, that kills. Any fuzzy punk/rock is great.

Oh, I also have this awesome duke ellington double LP comp thing that is really awesome to put on when I am getting high with a few people. It's kinda silly and really good and everyone digs it.

1st Flaming Lips EP
1st Galaxie 500 LP
Great Unwashed LP (and the first two Clean 12"'s for that matter)
Pastels "Truck Train Tractor" single
Crystalized Movements "Mind Disaster" and "Dog Tree" LP's
The Attack "Magic In The Air" LP
1st Flying Saucer Attack LP
"Magic Potion" by the Open Mind
"Father's Name Is Dad" by the Fire
Human Instinct's "Stoned Guitar"
"Bluebell" by the Perfect Disaster

Seconded on the Spacemen 3 and TVP's

These would work for MDMA, MDA, 2CB, LSD and DMT as well.

DAMN YOU IAN WILLIAMS
Steve
Please tell me that you've realized the errors of your ways by now? As much as I like the guy I think his playing is mostly smoke and mirrors.  All show, no go.  Now Damon's drumming is another matter altogether.  That's the reason people should listen to Don Caballero.

Never done any kind of drug in my life, but I find alcohol (cue pedantic BS about how it's a drug too blah blah blah) goes well with real basic punk rock, especially UK82 type stuff, dumb old hardcore, d-beat and '66 garage.

i like to listen to glen gould play bach when i'm stoned and cooking.

if i'm real high, like sit on the couch staring at my arm hair high, i've been jamming absinthe minds lately.  the new tape on not not fun is some downer deep thoughts type chant-like sludge. the drones and synths blanket you like the musical equivalent of putting on a snuggie that has been sitting on a radiator while you were in the shower.

I agree on everything sounds better baked.

Pere ubu goes down mightly tasty.

Robyn hitchcock (folky stuff)

Stone harbour

JT IV

Ohio things along the lines of Tommy jay, Great plains,  Jim shepard, Ego summit, Vertical slit etc

I guess anything with a folky moody downerish focus of things tends to get me going stoned, Punk just seems to get me feeling way too jumpy and shakey, I get sick of people asking me why my legs are going bezerk, My legs take on a mind of their own when stoned right leg especially, Punkier music is deffinately for beer time though.  I was linked to some rediculous Vice thread about "these bands only sound good stoned" I seem to remember the authour mentioning MC5 which I'd never ever even think of listening to stoned, Anyone else weirded out by this? Anyone else also get these crazy ultra spazz leg shakes when baking? not in a dance your ass of way but more of a unoticeable to self way that if you stood up or tried to you'd deffinately end up on your ass or face in seconds flat.

Sorry for the lengthy post!

Spacemen 3-Sound of Confusion is the ultimate, get high and listen thru headphones in a dark room type shit.

All the feedback panning left to right thru the headphones is an experience

Also good is Hendrix-Axis...."One Rainy Day" and "Axis" in particular...the end of Axis with all the flanger really blows my mind whilst ripped on tha finest blueberry nuggetry.

Roxy Music-"In Every Dream Home, a Heartache" is another good one.

Moondog's "Invocation" over and over again while reading on the 3rd Crusade. A less popular Crusade in light of the first two with their Saint Bernards and their Hermits, but oh so charming and full of romantic men. Had they managed to hold jerusalem, it'd be a hotbed of hot goings down today.

Can't really explain it, but that was my main attraction to coke.

doesnt it cause temporary tinnitus?  or so i have read.  bzzzzzzzzzzz

Like the other night, a few of us had a session and I put on a Lalo Schiffrin LP (one with all the Dirty Harry stuff on it ... don't tell me that drumming in Scorpio's Theme doesn't fuck shit up) and it freaked out my pal Steffen because, every time he said something we all stared at him and then in the soundtrack some dramatic climax, followed by a silent pause, accompanied said statement. He didn't like that at all. He's kinda shy.

Oh hey, I saw Wolf Eyes on some serious cookies and man, that shit almost made me go to church. That was pretty fucked up.
