Title: Denver
Post by: Crowbar on April 27, 2009, 06:09:24 AM
Is it a cool place to live?  Fun shit to do?  Is there a SCENE??

I've been thinking - not that hard - about what it would be like to live there.

Yeah man, the fresh air out there and being able to see mountains on the horizon every day has got to have a psychological benefit.

Not to mention there are hundreds of places within a day's drive for camping, hiking, and mountain biking (a sport which I have only gotten to do a couple times, but which I absolutely love).

i like going outside. but i hated living in colorado. sure, i it was eons ago and i was in HS or just out, but I didn't like it...and i was coming from a town with 2000 people and had to drive 2 hrs to see a show or buy an actual record. Boulder (where I actually resided) had some record stores and bands came through occasionally, but the white person with dreads in an suv really got to me after a while (and this is coming from a person that spent the last 10 yrs in berkeley). Denver was a little better as far as records and seediness, but I think as much goes on there as it ever did...which isn't much. There was one huge dig through piles of shit record store that i liked in some 'burb outside of denver, but it has probably been covered by an entire neighborhood of houses that look exactly the same. the people i know that still live there are now married with kids and don't go out or belong to an exercise cult. The airport also looks fucking assinine. Pikas are quite cute though (however, we also have those in CA).

I'm good with fresh air and all (and mountains and streams), but the people make the place and hippies are the most annoying animals on the planet (outside of mosquitoes).

I lived in Colorado for most of the first half of the decade. The good things are the weather - almost always sunny and only hot two months a year. Stuff to do - if you are active and like outdoors stuff to do you'll always be busy. The people - I actually like the people, but I can tolerate the hippieness. If you can't you'll hate it. But everyone is nice and likes to have fun. The beer - every little city has its own brewery. As far as scene stuff, Wax Trax and Twist & Shout are as good of record stores as I've been to, and I've been to Goner, Academy, Reckless, etc. Shows seem to go through waves. When I was there a lot of bands played the Larimer Lounge and got decent attendance. Then when gas went through the roof it seemed bands quit traveling there. Now it seems ok again. Local bands that I saw were worthless. If you play music I'm not sure what kind of people you can expect to play with.

Okay, here's my story.

I was born/raised in upstate NY and moved to Denver this past July.

Like many on here, i focus most of my efforts and resources on records and beer. When I first came out, I didn't have a job because I was too busy studying for the LSAT. This gave me some time to check out the city inbetween practice tests.

The thrift stores are pretty good. There's a huge salvo by my house that sells 10 cent records. There's a goodwill near cherry creek (rich people) that has the best housewares for cheap.

Record stores are also pretty good - wax trax is top for new punk. Cheaper used records are priced really well, but I think some of the higher-end stuff is kept under the counter. Good used jazz.

Twist and Shout is OK. They have a good selection of new and used records, but their used prices are on the higher side.

My new favorite is just north of the city - Black and Read. Half the store is used books, the other half is mostly used LPs. Not junk. Lots of good stuff, some rare stuff, everything priced very fairly. Lotsa punk. Definitely my favorite.

There are some good restaurants. I'm not huge into mexican, but some neighborhood joints have fantastic food and cheap beer - personal favorite is at 17th and vine and called Vine Street Pub. There is some good thai as well.

Grocery shopping is solid if you avoid safeway. Stick with King Soopers, scour their half-off and near expiration goods (cheap cheese, meat, pesto, juice, spinach). Sunflower market is fantastic for cheap produce and quality meat. There isn't a ton of homegrown produce, which is sad,  but they still have farmer's markets when the weather is good.

Local music is not so good, as stated. I haven't checked out the young-teenager-thrash scene, which seems to revolve around a place called the blast-o-mat. Google if curious. Haven't gone to too many shows, but the ones I have seen haven't been great.

The logic of touring and geography means that most bands won't come to Denver. This is unfortunate.

There are tons of great craft brewers in the area, which means that there are always sales on good quality and local beers. This is a very good thing. The brewery tours are very cool as well, and most bars have good happy hours with good beers on tap.

I know that there's outdoorsy crap, like hiking and shit. I don't do that too much, but if you're into it, this is the place.

Lots of Hispanics.

I really don't have a positive impression of Boulder. Seems like everyone walks around with this inflated ego and sense of entitlement. More rich people, which i don't like. More expensive, gimmicky, fake hippies, all that crap. Even still, it's fun for a weekend trip if you know people there.

Haven't been to fort collins.

The weather is usually really nice, but dry. If you have allergies, they will significantly reduce or disappear upon coming here.

Job market seems to be the way it is in most big cities, but that's another discussion altogether. Suffice it to say that I don't think the recession has hit Denver (or CO) as hard as it has in states like nevada, florida, arizona, some of the midwest...

oh, and coming from NY -- people don't know how to fucking drive here, especially in the snow.

It was my experience people out there drive like maniacs in the snow. But the slightest bit of rain will shut down I-70 or I-25. Also, any accident on the side of the road will result in a 45 minute delay from rubberneckers.
Title: Re: Who lives in DENVER, COLORADO?
Post by: alexyoshi on April 27, 2009, 11:41:33 AM
to coloradan drivers - there is only sharp acceleration and sharp braking. there is nothing in the middle.

either they go way too fast in the snow (forgetting how to drive in it) and cause a billion accidents, or overcompensate and drive like a bunch of old ladies.

and the concept of the left lane being for passing must be totally unheard of.
Title: Re: Who lives in DENVER, COLORADO?
Post by: alexyoshi on April 27, 2009, 11:43:45 AM
not to mention i live in the part of town near stockyards and factories and stuff, so there are a million trucks trying to get around, making certain interchanges on the highway (i live right next to the "mousetrap," 25+70) totally impossible to get through quickly during rush hour.

and that's another thing, the trucks. people here seem to really like SUVs, trucks, suburbans, jeeps, etc., and i understand the need to cart your shit around for work or whatever, but most of em are empty.

Denver was ranked 1st place as 'the drunkest city in America' (by Men's Health magazine or something like that) and Colorado Springs came in 3rd! (being a cab driver myself, I can attest that the truth of that ranking is probably correct.)

Pfft!

Mark: I kinda like Denver. Always have had good shows there. A friend of mine just moved back there. She's a cool gal, a good cook, likes to party and used to play in Riot Grrl bands. if you end up there and would like someone to show you around town or something, I can put you in touch with her. She's good peoples.

He said it'll be a while...but then again you've said you were coming for some time, so this love connection is still in jeopardy!

Denver has a lot less going on musically than Milwaukee, but (not to speak for Mark) I don't think it matters that much, because he doesn't go out during the week and only makes occasional drop-ins on weekends. I wonder how a Plastic Pets style offendopunk band would do in Denver? If you get the chance, try it out!

Is 15th St. Tavern still around?  Saw a lot of good shows there when I lived there.  But this was the late '90s.  Like everyone else said, the sunshine can help your atttitude, especially if you're used to the midwest or northwest.
and most of the hippies stay in the Boulder bubble.  Denver's just like any other big city.  I don't know.  I liked it.

Nope, they demolished that whole block I heard. It was right across the street from the convention center. I loved that place. I djed sundays there for years. It was mostly a bunch of homeless dudes.

The air is also not very clean. In the mountains maybe, but Denver has a huge pollution problem.

And PS, Boulder is NOT Denver. Fuck that place.

15th Street closed down in 2007, they had a big "save the venue" type show and then went away.

I've seen some fun shows at Rhinoceropolis, Larimer Lounge just moved the soundboard and it opened up a bunch of space, I live a couple blocks from the Bluebird but I don't really like that place.

If you're moving to Denver, I'd recommend living in Capitol Hill, Baker, or Congress Park. I've heard Highlands is a cool place to live but I don't make it over there often as I don't have a car.

Wax Trax is my number 1 shop, I bet Black & Read would be but I've only been once... the whole "no car" thing again. Twist & Shout is a great shop but Wax Trax consistently has more records that I want.

I've lived here for a little over three years and I'm ready to leave. It's a good city but it's just a little too small for me. (I am a fat, drunk bozo so the outdoorsy stuff is out of my league.)

Wow, didn't mean to bump such an old thread.

Ladonnas were Manitowoc dudes based in CO. Maybe the loudest band I've ever seen outside of Motorhead, no lie. One of 'em ended up back in Manty playing in Ivan & the Terribles for a while.

http://www.gigbot.net lists most Denver shows but aside from the pre & post sxsw rush, the pickings are pretty slim.

Hi-Dive, Rhinoceropolis, and Larimer Lounge tend to get most of the shows I'm interested in.

Much as I love Toronto, and Canada, seeing the rent people pay in American cities makes me jealous.  And yes, I know that NYC or SF are as expensive or more than Toronto or Vancouver, but you can live in an actual city in the US for rent that you'd only find in smaller places with nothing to do here.

Decent one bedroom in Toronto, you're looking at around $900+ unless you decide to live way outside the core.

For Falafel and Kebabs you will wanna check out a place called Jerusalem.

It is near the University of Denver and has great middle eastern food.

Also, Watercourse has kick ass breakfasts and is the best option for veggie
options.  Great food and reasonably prices, at least for breakfast.

great divide tap room is the best. happy hour from 4 to 7 ($3 pints). fresh titan IPA is amazing.

definitely check out vine street for dinner if you don't have anywhere better to go (they open at 4.) great burgers. happy hour from 4 to 6 means $2.75 pints of really good beer. plus i'm pretty sure that today is burger monday, so there's some deal like a pint and a burger for $7 or something.

good cheap BBQ on colfax: Wolfe's. (http://wolfesbbq.samsbiz.com/)

You can get arrested for reckless driving. The reckless driving statutes differ from state to state.

Apparently Colorado is one of those states where a child was killed in a crosswalk in front of school, and his parents went to the capital to get the legislature to pass a new act in his name. Not to make light of the situation, but everyday, I see a number of new acts in various states named after kids who died of something. And it's always white kids. Joey's Law. Katie's Law. Amber's Law. It's never JaVontay's Law or Phuc's Law or Lupe's Law. Am I making too light of this situation? Or is this now too dark to be humorous anyway?

Hey, Ben Wallers....Can this become a Country Teasers song before it becomes a South Park episode?

Regardless...someone please help this dude out!
