Holy fuck...every band people are talking about on here these days SUCKS!
Blank Dogs, Crystal Stilts, Electric Bunnies, etc,etc,etc...and to a lesser degree, band like The Oh sees and Tyvek.
The only place I see punk-rock records is when someone is selling 'em off to buy new garbage. Remember when people here used to talk about punk-rock, garage, power-pop, etc...and not boring indie pap?

Punx and Skinz unite.
-
Nofficks
-
Yessssss....
-
I have never heard this punk before.
-
is there any way we could set up a separate board for people that uniformly hate any new music and would prefer that music just ended around 1999?
-
What punk would you like discussed? Let's punk.
"New Music" can be punk. Punk is good. Punk punk.
-

Here's some new people you can hang out with (http://board.vivalavinyl.org/).
-
As far as regular punk goes, there aren't a lot of people doing str8 forward stuff
Bundle of Fags might work for you, just basic punk. I honestly can't think of any regular punk out there.
The Yolks...you will probably really like them. Box Elders...not really punk, but you might actually like them too
Fontana is another one....just regular punk.

rockin' music
-
Yeah, Scott B, out of his Shadoks coma!
I'm really into this new band, The Replacements. They got this record called 'Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash' which just kicks total ass and puts me in a drinking mood. I think it's on Dirtnap.
-
I'n not worried about it being staright-forward,,,I just want some tension and energy. Bundle Of fags are OK, Fontana is OK, Yolks are OK...Box Elders are boring. I like alot of new music...I just think people on here are hyping alot of really boring shit lately. How about some more bands with N-R-G?!?!?
-
You could listen to that Francis Harold LP.
-
seconded on Bundle of Fags and definitely Fontana. Good picks. Get all the Feelers, Creteens, Fag Cop and Spread Eagles records.
-
You could listen to that Francis Harold LP.
this is sound reality. you could dig this with a big shovel.
-
right now im listening to svart framtid
-
To be honest...that Francis Harold shit does very little for me...vocals sound like they were recorded in a cave. If I can't imagine playing over the sound system in a half empty bar, without it sounding like shit...it probably ain't for me.
-
Creteens "Cocksucker" on repeat. Its great.
-
Ok...now I see where you are coming from.
You can only buy the Sing Sing reissues then. Sorry. Punk is dead for you.
-
ebonics, teutonics, bubonics, chronics, and tronics are also very puuuuuuuuunk
-
Yeah...I kinda dig The Cretens records I have...which one is "Cocksucker" on?
-
I don't mind shitty recordings...some shit just fucks with my mind. That singing in a cave shit makes my depression act up...
-
Yeah...I kinda dig The Cretens records I have...which one is "Cocksucker" on?
this one rulez. its just called cocksucker.

I really like punk-rock. I can't listen to boring music...if it doesn't keep moving (or get me moving) or do something, or have a hook...I wanna slit my fucking wrists.

10 good recent "punk" records
watery love ep
audacity lp
francis harold lp
bundle of fags ep
drunkdriver lp and ep
gg king ep
ean eraser ep
ratas del vaticano lp
silla electrica ep
personal and the pizzas ep and split w/ bobby ubangi
there. from brutal shit, to straight forward shit, to dumb shit. no psych or indie leanings. all good bands and records that a lot of people on here like and have talked about. if you don't like these then you can always listen to the stolen hearts.

Charlie & the Moonhearts 7" on Goodby Boozy
Useless Eaters can be your next favorite band. Lots of records coming up.

Thats it? Get a life dude. I love punk(and rock n roll) but there's something about grown ass men obsessing over records and other grown ass men with guitars that turns me off to it all. Fucking shoot me in the ass.
-
Charlie and The Moonhearts seem to have some decent shit going on...and I do dig Useless eaters. Arturo's list was 90% garbage. So, so far i gotta buy some Bundle of fags, Charlie and The Moonhearts, Useless eaters...what else?

Arturo's list was 90% garbage.
Stop being a boring bitch. "I dont like that, I dont like that, eww, gross. Mommy butter my bum." Just so you know, that last quote was from Wattie. Up the punx!.
-
Cause I'm 100% serious all the time...
-
...that's the only way you'll bring down The Man.
-
electric bunz rule dude. clean our your ears brah.
-
I've got the first Electry Bunnies 7", and remember thinking it was pretty dull...the stuff from the second single and LP that I've heard is like a lullaby...puts me straight to sleep. That video looks good though...

Useless Eaters can be your next favorite band. Lots of records coming up.
They better be, after copping their name from one of the best punk songs ever!
-
Is it really not obvious to just pick up MRR once in awhile?
Just go buy everything K-Town related, then everything non-Fucked Up on Deranged, pick up every other Deadbeat release, pick up the non-emo releases on No Idea, then go start a band that channels UK '78 and So Cal '82 and yer set. That's at least 25-30 records a year.
Really, don't pay any attention to SSR. Ever since he was on the cover of MRR, he's been so over punk rock because he had climbed the scene ladder as high as anyone can go. That's why he listens to all this fagatronic Z-Gun krap now.
Krap which is all I listened to when I was 14. I hated hardcore in 1983-4, ewwwww!
-
Listening to "Agorophobic" via the Myspace...THUMBS UP!
-
Just heard 2 more...WOAH SHIT!! THIS BAND DOES RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
i know. they slay the butt. no hostages.
-
i know. they slay the butt. no hostages.
yo why didnt you cum to chicago bro. cum 2morrow and experience the Mickey
-
Wa Mu's mixed w/ Cheap Time er some shit....sounds fuckin punk-rock to me!!
-
yeah for sure. for some reason i get impression you'll like Hex Dispensers too. And add:
White Wires
Stupid Party
Le Face
Masshysteri
stuff like that. You would prolly like the Vicious, Masshysteri, Cola Freaks
-
i know. they slay the butt. no hostages.
yo why didnt you cum to chicago bro. cum 2morrow and experience the Mickey
school nite. i was gettin my dick sucked by da teacher. came on a apple. Mickey the VOT show?
-
yea, forgot about Stupid Party. great band.
-
Seriously, this dude has the worst taste ever! I'd agree with the sentiment if anyone else said it. I'd like to hear more explosive shit that jumps out at you instead of most of the murky, introspective, art-serious & dull shit I've been hearing lately, too, but he just wants Rip Off part 2 or something like that.
Electric Bunnies are all over the place, and their "punk" songs are great! I'm not even going to suggest anything else for TinEarMan, though he'd probably like the King Tuff album (how could you not?), or should like it. Not that it's "punk," but whatever.
-
I'll admit that I've probably only missed about 10 issue sof MRR in the past 20 years. I'm just saying...there used to be ALOT more talk of bands that interested me on this board...then everything changed.
-

we're the waVVes crowd bro
GENERATION WAVVVVES
-
I was all into Lover! until I saw 'em live, and then hated it. Same w/ Jay Reatard. Well, maybe hate is too strong a word...
Useless Eaters reminds me of when I first heard the Carbonas...REALLY GOOD AND TIGHT! Never got to see Carboners live, though. Hopefully U.E. will tour through SF!
-
I thought the Hex Dispensers were really boring at first, but there album became one of my faves of the couple years. Mass Hysteri's album is one of my faves from the last year for sure...wasn't sure what to think about the White Wires at first ( I played in a band with Ian right before he started that band, and thought I might be biased), but that album really grew on me...another fave of the past year.
-
King Tuff stuff on Myspace sounds really bland to me...I'm clinically depressed...I need motivating music! I need something that gets me moving, or gets me smiling and singing along. Pot rock doesn't work for me.
Seriously though...this SNFU album I'm listening to now is better than anything you guys have mentioned in like 2 years!
The Rantouls singles I listened to before this were rad too...
-
Masshysteri = i play that one a lot here too. it sometimes annoys me because they double the vox too much for one sitting, but the songs are really great and well done album. no doubt.
Do you get pills for the depression? drug it up man. we are chemical people anyways.
- Antibiotic Jesus.
-
Yeah...I know what you're saying about that Mass Hysteri album...it would be better if it were like 4 singles. I still think it's really goo though.
Naw, no pills for me...didn't like that much...that's what the music is for. Just can't listen to mopey, fuck rock...or I end up sitting in the basement in the dark, staring at the walls for a couple days...

SMART ASS! Well, off to see King Khan....
-
some of the bands people are listening aren't really that punk, they are more rock n roll (such as personal and the pizzas) as far as straight forward punk bands, my favorites are The Carbonas and LiveFastDie.
-
t. depression, are you in my tape trading club? if so i want you out.
-
Carbonas and LFD made some decent, straight-forward, punk records. I think that Feelers LP, and a couple of their singles are some of my faves of the past few years (Too bad they weren't as exciting, live). I'm looking for something new, that's on par with The Feelers - "Just Can't get Enough"..
-
t. depression, are you in my tape trading club? if so i want you out.
haha
talk about hard to please. every recommendation shut down. and what's wrong with sitting in the basement in the dark staring at walls? i'd love to be doing that right now.
-
Vinnie...ya, I'm in...you seriously want me out? Is everyone making tapes of bore-rock?
C'mon...I've got thousands of crappy records lying around here...I'm sure I could pick out enough nice turds to lay down on 90 minutes of tape...
-
I think that Feelers LP, and a couple of their singles are some of my faves of the past few years (Too bad they weren't as exciting, live).
you're funny.
-
Ramones are pretty good.
-
mr depression, do you like modern hardcore revival? seems like that's what you need to look into.
-
Ramones are pretty good.
nah man, they're way too angular.
-
Oh, fuck...yeah, you're right. Might I suggest Total Chaos?
-
You guys have me totally pegged wrong...I mean, I've been on this board for almost 4 years...I came on here for a reason. At one time there was alot of discussion about great music. Over the last while there has been less and less great music, and alot hyping of mediocre, watered down indie-sounding, shit.
I like 80's styled hardcore, I like 70's styled punk(and that's a wide spectrum), I like a little noise...a little art-shit...and I like 60's garage and 80's garage shit...I like alot of what all that shit inspired. I check out every band you guys mention on here...and there's just been very few lately that I've wanted to buy records by...
-
What new punk band/records would you like to discuss then? Arturo gave you 10 current actual punk records to dig on...and they all apparently suck. If we're not talking about the right punk bands, what are the right ones to you?
And....................y ou could probably better serve yourself by starting a thread hyping one of them magical bands you dig so much rather than starting a thread about how everyone on here is dumb for liking Electric Bunnies.
-
I'm not saying everyone is dumb for liking the Electric Bunnies...I just don't get it. Up until a while ago people on here were hyping some seriously exciting bands...now it's stuff like The Electric Bunnies, etc, etc, etc. Maybe The Electric Bunnies have some great songs (someone mentioned their "punk" songs), but I haven't heard them. Point me in the right direction. I don't want to hate everything...I come on here to find about GREAT new bands.
Seriously though...Arturos list was pretty lack-lustre. 90% bad was a total exageration though...it was more around 50%.
-
Awesome...thanks for that great big list of bands that chart high enough on the punkiocity scale to be worthy of discussion on this forum where you come to find out about great new shit.
-
i started reading blank generation because they talked about teengenerate, registrators, rip off records stuff etc, then they started covering A-Frames, Pirahnas and onto Tyrades, Spits, etc amongst other bands with varied sounds. there was the one man band post oblivians blooze punk craze from 8-10 years ago, then power pop craze, then weird punk craze. no we have an indie pop psych mystery myspace craze. with everything theres good and bad but its good that things don't stay stagnant. i don't like every band that people talk about here either and its always been that way. you may think my list sucks but i was at least pointing out that there are still relevant "punk" bands that don't sound like the whatever the current "thing" is and that people on here still like stuff like that.
i for one like to see things go in different directions because it broadens my spectrum of what music can be and sound like and opens doors to older stuff i may otherwise not know about. i love regular punk stuff and appreciate modern bands that do it well, but have plenty of records in that vein i can enjoy so doesn't matter much to me if there is a lack of it at certain points.
-
My Chain Gang records fill the void of today.
-
man, i don't hear carbona's in useless eaters, i think i said elsewhere something like UV Race, which i realize now is 1st 7" only because the newer uv race stuff is much more mature, but useless eaters is very close to that 1st 7" for me
plus as erico says USELESS EATERS
Agaraphobic 7"
(Goodbye Boozy)
Memphis KBD kids hated by Termbos!
Love it!
-
Makes sense...but are you guys all still spinning your Registrators, A-frames, Tyrades, Feelers, Spits, etc, etc, etc records...or is everyone just on to the next thing??? I guess I just don't understand the fads/phases/crazes. Half way through the weird punk thang it got a little too over the top for me...and this indie shit I just don't get at all. At least I'm saving a shitload of money on new records right now. So...when is this "craze" gonna be over? I need some new records...
P.S. - i Love Government issue
-
If I win this Rings 45 on eBay, I'm gonna play "Automobile" 17 times in a row and then kill myself.

20 years???? yes, everything has changed except you! man, 20 years listening to the same template over and over and over. you like what you like, fine; but no use in complaining that things change over time. it can't be 1989 forever. wait, wait, are you the canadian version of young steve?
-
Are you saying there is no good music covered in MRR? Or that the magazine hasn't changed over the past couple decades. Most of the time, I don't like 80% of the stuff they cover in that magazine, but that 20% is more than I can find in any other magazine. Plus, it's cheap, and widely available.

some stuff stands the test of time, some stuff doesn't. i rarely listen to the lost sounds (though i still like it) but i listen to the a-frames pretty frequently. haven't listened to my fevers records in years, but i useless and modern by the fm knives always sounds fresh to me. some records of years past are burned into my brain as much as the saints, black flag, ramones, etc. some of it sounds cheesy.
this shit happens to every one. you get tired of whatever current wave, but soon something comes along that kicks you in the ass. sometimes it takes time. you don't have to check out what people talk about here. we're not the only place that discusses punk or underground music.
-
Arturo, stop being rational.
-
I onkly keep records for six months then sell them and move on to the next big thing. Who were the Registrators?
-
So...when is this "craze" gonna be over?
You do yourself a disservice thinking of any style of music as a "craze" or a "fad", especially if it is something you dont like or understand. I also think you fuck yourself by thinking that punk has some rigid structure or stylistic rules. My idea of punk is far broader than your's. It does include Tyvek and Druid Perfume. In fact, I think of those two bands are more in the spirit of punk than the Carbonas or any hardcore revival band, as I think staying static and accepting things as they are - and in this case things means musical styles/templates - isn't challenging, especially when the 1-2-3-4 punk sound is so accepted that the style is used in TV commercials and as bumper music on mainstream talk radio shows. Really, I dont think punk was meant to be safe or lazy or even nostalgic. Who wants a punk Sha-na-na? (Okay, we all do but you know what I mean.)
Are you saying there is no good music covered in MRR? Or that the magazine hasn't changed over the past couple decades. Most of the time, I don't like 80% of the stuff they cover in that magazine, but that 20% is more than I can find in any other magazine. Plus, it's cheap, and widely available.
I think MRR has gotten a bit better over the last year or so since they've widened their coverage to include something more than patch bands. However I also think that 20% is being very generous. Musically MRR is very conservative and, until recently, has adhered to a very restrictive definition of punk.
-
Oh...I know...this site has just been the most in tune with what I like in the past...and it's weird to come here and not like 90% or what people are talking about. I DO have to check out everything people are talking about on here...otherwise how else would I know how much I hate it.
Once again...I maintain that the Black Lips ruined music forever. everything on here went downhill after you guys started going nutz over them...
-

Hey I didn't call it a craze...i just repeated it. I was being tongue-in-cheek when I started this thread. I've think punk is a lot broader than you give me credit for....but to be a style or genre of music, I also belive that it does have boundaries and styles. To define it as a style of music, there must be a point of experimentation where something ceases to be punk. Who cares though? I guess I just have to wait until thisshit passes, and maybe the next thing to come along will be a little more exciting...
MRR has never been all patch bands...there has always been that 10 - 30% coverage of decent stuff. Like I said, that's better than most other magazines have done in the past few years.
-
You know what I could really go for? An argument about what is and isn't punk. Maybe with a side of Todd and Steve arguing about songwriting and power-pop. That would be a great front-load sesh for my dick feast.
-
i dunno man, call me crazy or whatever but i understand this guy completely. he just wants to discuss music of a particular flavor, but find new examples of it that excite him. i dont know where all the pissing in the wind stuff came into play. he prolly reads a lot of MRR because gasp...he might like it. oh fuck. thats so shitty.
that said....this is also a good quote that rings true as hell.

mitch, is it permissible to eat dinner in just your boxers if it is 90+ in you apartment?
-
Totally, yeah. But is your apartment punk rock?
-
Are you guys trying to make a legitimate case that shit like Plastobeton should be widely embraced and is legitamately digestable to all stomachs?
-
I just want someone to take a break from putting out marshmallow indie-psych stuff...and put out a Tyrades singles collection. Maybe that would shut me up for a couple weeks...
-
Shit...if I just take the time to play the singles back to back...that might shut me up for a month!
-
Tell me about this traditional music...

see this is not hard to understand this sentiment. people are too defensive i think.
-
despite the blank dogs connection, the upcoming dc snipers album is punk as fuck.
-
i see straight-forward punk-rock as "traditional music". Ya know, something that would fit right beside bluegrass, ragtime or the blues.
tim armstrong said the same thing.
-
heres how it is imbiciles:
punk is a word. thats it. somebody described music they couldnt explain that was raping their ears with raw shit sounds they never heard before as punk. blah. punk is cutting edge. soriano is right to embrace a wide definition around broad principles like that because frankly he's right. but that still don't mean someone can't like whatever the shit was that came out back when. that style isnt punk anymore. there is no fucking such thing at all as classic punk. unless you invent a time machine. you might like "that stuff". you dont like punk if you like something that was hard as fuck in the 80's or 70's or 60's or 50's TODAY. but like i said theres nothing wrong with that music at all. and thats what were talking about.

Didn't know cocks were so chewy.

And ps, FUCK THE PUNX! THE PUNX ATE A Last Sons of Kypton!

If I win this Rings 45 on eBay, I'm gonna play "Automobile" 17 times in a row and then kill myself.
I had a pickup band in 1997 where I did vox, never got out of practice space. I insisted we cover this song, the emo guys who were playing along thought it was retarded because it was too easy to play.
The highlight of their musical careers and they never even knew it.

fuck. how many times can you have this same fucking discussion of your boring musical taste???

Oh...I can talk about my boring musical taste FOREVER!
-
new spits album coming out this summer.
also, slovenly is releasing a 45 rpm 12" of the chimiks, featuring vince from the fatals. it fucking shreds.
you might also wanna check out the gothiefs (from germany). it has a dude who was in superhellicopter.

"punk" of the non-spikey-haired image conscious sorts. made by a middle aged nutcase (me)...no kiddie shit. however, be warned, i DO like a wide variety of shit including much of what is discussed on here and even some sad, stupid indie shit. my shit does not sound like everything i like, and, at least i don't think, that it sounds like a lot of current stuff going on now that you are frustrated by. maybe there's a reason for that, though....it probably just sucks. but, when your (or my..) head is clouded by various prescription and non-prescription drugs, it is hard to tell. give it a try, T.Depression...

oh shit, i have a cd-r of this stuff. it's fucking rad. tongue depression will hate it. way to trippy.
-
no dude, it's gonna be cool, band stuff recorded a month ago with some of the trippy shit, golden boys and tom potter and a drummer up in the shit
-
tom potter too? dope!
-
You're right...I don't dig any of the James Arthur stuff I've heard...not tuneful enough. If I can't hum along to it...I probably won't buy the record. Don't like most of his previous bands either...
-
Tortured Tongues weren't my thing either...mostly because of the vocals. That layered vocal thing has to be done right...and most of the vocals just seemed tossed in there. The last track was my fave of the bunch though...
-

GREAT NEWS!

I also don't like kost of the records on In The Red before that last couple of years...and most of the current bands on Crypt in the 90's...

scrod was right about you.

Why are you talking to this faggot? We have a ban function for a reason.

Useless Eaters is my new favorite.
Also, I can't wait for more Meercaz toonz.
No more weird-o punk in '09.

I do agree with T. Depression's statement. TB still covers some great bands but I have noticed that a lot of the bands talked about as of recent seem to leave a less than desirable taste in my mouth. I don't really think liking straight ahead punk or rock music is living in the past or being narrow in taste as some of the posters in this thread insinuate. It's not like any of the bands on SS Records are covering any new ground, despite what SS and his unwarranted self importance will tell you. "My idea of punk is far broader than your's". What a pompous ivory tower statement. Besides all music is just ripping off other music and changing it slightly. I do hope that more straight ahead bands will come into fruition but I still want good mix of different approaches and sounds, As long as its not boring of course.
-
"My idea of punk is far broader than your's". What a pompous ivory tower statement.
Really, nothing "ivory tower" about that statement. T Depression's definition of punk is pretty much limited to 1-2-3-4 variety out of the garage or KBD world, which is pretty easy to figure out given his hostility toward stuff outside that range. My idea of punk is less restrictive and informed by growing up at a time before the punk had a rule book and the hardcores drew lines stating what and what wasn't punk. Everything from Black Randy to Black Humor to Throbbing Gristle was/is punk. That doesnt come from some ivory tower, it comes from life. Whatever, live in your cages, fine by me - just dont sour on people for not wanting to cozy up to you.
-
god damnit. when will people shut up about this shit. there is plenty of great punk rock out there right now. any of you people ever see this band called tv ghost? they're punk, and they're one of the best live bands i've seen in seventeen years of going to shows. plenty more shit where that came from.
maybe the problem with some of you is that you buy/download new records at a rate of four a day. maybe you should actually listen to what you download and buy for a change instead of just listening to something once or checking shit out on myspace and acting like you have a valid opinion on it.
the problem isn't the lack of good 'punk' music on this board, it's the overabundance of whining fucking retards with too much time/money on their hands.
-
splitting hairs
-
Q: whats the difference btwn neil armstrong and michael jackson?
A: neil armstrong walked on the moon (supposedly). michael jackson fucked little boys
-
jimv is in a great punk band too. fnu ronnies. punk rock, and it's good. they even punch each other on stage.
there is so much good shit out there, it makes me wanna punch people when i hear them complain.
-
most peoples idea of punk on here usually seems to be some 90s garage stuff anyway, yawn
fnu definitely best philly band, first time i saw them they broke up after like 2 songs. it was awesome

TV Ghost gets better every time I see them. A good example of how an arty band can be brutal.
-
Ha! Yeah, how fucking ignorant is it for someone to think they have a valid opinion of a band just based off of 15 seconds of listening to a song on their myspace? Gimme a break.
Anyway, fuck all this talk about punk shit, I wanna talk about Species Counterpoint done in the Dorian mode. It's a big part of what made the Catholic Boys songs' so catchy; although, they mainly were entangled with the chromatic scale, but still.....
you know, if one were to create whole tone descending lines in counterpoint harmonized while the same is ascending in chromatic sequence and run the same film forwards and backwards...blah blash blah blash////......blah...then square root it by 69 in concentric circles we would find the ivory tower spokesperson giving the aesthetic rules in Hammurabi codes while raping the punk in jail....

Meh. I'm not souring up to anyone and I am not bound by restrictions and genre rules. Yes, punk is a very musical form blah blah blah agreed. It just seems like if someone doesn't agree with you, they are automatically invalid. Yeah right.
-
Yo SS...how do you know what my definition of punk is? I listen to alot of shit...sure I listen to alot of 1-2-3-4 punk/garage/pop...but I listen to alot of other stuff too. I just need something that grabs me and goes somewhere.
Wounded Lion.
If "Carol Cloud" doesn't make something inside you thump, earnestly consider douching your ears.
As far as this goes...it's more crap. he music would work if the vocals were better, but that singer and the lyrics have gotta go...they render the songs almost unlistenable. I liked the second song on their Myspace better than "carol cloud" anyway...
-
Hmmm, I think species counterpoint generally tries to avoid parallel steps, so that would preclude descending whole tones. The more graduated free counterpoint though wouldn't have trouble with it.
As for the chromatic scale in as applied to counterpoint, even though modern definitions of "dissonance" are much different than they were in the 1500's, most still regard the chromatic scale as not being all that melodic(except, again, for the aforementioned Catholic Boys, & the Terrible Twos as well), so t'would not fit in so well with species counterpoint which frowns on discord.
Does the tribune concur?

Blank Dogs, Crystal Stilts, Electric Bunnies, etc,etc,etc...and to a lesser degree, band like The Oh sees and Tyvek.
The only place I see punk-rock records is when someone is selling 'em off to buy new garbage. Remember when people here used to talk about punk-rock, garage, power-pop, etc...and not boring indie pap?
From above I assume that you think Blank Dogs, Crystal Stilts, Electric Bunnies, etc,etc,etc...and to a lesser degree, band like The Oh sees and Tyvek are "boring indie pap" and not punk.

I dunno what that's all about, but I do like the Terrible Two's. I foul=nd the Catholic Boys full length unlistenable when it came out..maybe I'll pull that out...

ok..but dont thing of counterpoint as melodic per se. think micro-tones and frequency waves btwn each passing tone
-

Yes. You need to give that one another try.
-

No, all the stuff except for the Terrible Twos and Catholic Boys liking the chromatic scale was bullshit. Counterpoint's fucking complicated, gimme 20 more years and I'll have a handle on it.
Sorry. It's just so scientific n complicated n shit. You know what I'm saying?
-
Micro-tones are the future of music.........
You are mistaken. Pica-tones are far superior
-
From above I assume that you think Blank Dogs, Crystal Stilts, Electric Bunnies, etc,etc,etc...and to a lesser degree, band like The Oh sees and Tyvek are "boring indie pap" and not punk.
Well...with the exception of Tyvek, I don't think any of those bands play "punk-rock". They may have punk-rock songs, etc...but if Blank Dogs or Crystal Stilts are a punk band...so is every band playing every indie-rock fest this summer.
-

Nah. That was way more of Scott Soriano than a Tim Yo. You should give yourself more credit. Yah I play hardcore. So what? I mean you can't really give me shit about that when everything SS records has put out is essentially Can. And no, my parent was not into the hardcore thrashings as she was a product of the early 70's and Grand Funk Railroad. Come on Scotty, the devil is in the details.

Can? My god, do you even listen to the records I put out? I mean, if the devil is in the details, tell me what records sound like Can and what Can records? A Frames? Geeks? Nothing People? Dan Melchior? Can????? Not, that I am bothered by Can comparisons, but Can?

Well Scotty, since Can pretty much encompassed every rock genre known to man, I am essentially right. Scotty I sensed some disgust in you last post. Would that be a correct assumption?

You guys have me totally pegged wrong...I mean, I've been on this board for almost 4 years...I came on here for a reason. At one time there was alot of discussion about great music. Over the last while there has been less and less great music, and alot hyping of mediocre, watered down indie-sounding, shit.
I like 80's styled hardcore, I like 70's styled punk(and that's a wide spectrum), I like a little noise...a little art-shit...and I like 60's garage and 80's garage shit...I like alot of what all that shit inspired. I check out every band you guys mention on here...and there's just been very few lately that I've wanted to buy records by...
the two punk bands i go see in Chicago on the reg are Canadian Rifle and Chronic Seizure. you might dig them...
Canadian Rifle and Chronic Seizure both fucking suck.
-
I've got a couple Chronic Seizure records...they're OK...but I grew up on Hardcore, and like bands that remind me of my faves from the 80's. Canadian Rifle isn't blatant enough for my tastes...

I've pretty much gone 100% Yacht Rock.
YACHT
MusicBlog
Location: Portland, OR
Websites:
http://myspace.com/yacht
http://teamyacht.com/
Bio: YACHT is a lot of things. It's kind of a band, but it's mostly a genre-and-media-spanning life project founded and led by Jona Bechtolt of ... (more) the Northwest's very own Portland, Oregon. Bechtolt (and new member Claire L. Evans) make anthemic power jams, play them backwards and soak them in nearly-psychedelic cherry cola. YACHT's heart is the shows: uncluttered, inspiring sessions of damaged dance moves and synchronized crowd-waving, backed by constantly changing elements -- PowerPoint presentations, audience Q&A sessions, and shamanistic video environments.
In 2007, YACHT played more than 200 shows in 17 countries around the world, chasing album releases in North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and China, and touring with such luminaries as LCD Soundsystem, Architecture in Helsinki, High Places, and Vampire Weekend. With the new addition of Claire L. Evans, YACHT hopes to double their stamina and play over 500 shows this year and in more unlikely places: on airplanes, in planetariums, underwater, and on the roofs, and/or bathrooms, of very large buildings.
Bechtolt has been a promiscuous genre-smasher since his adolescence, when he decided that playing drums in the touring punk band he formed with his older brother was more worthwhile than attending a single day of high school. He's plied his unique breed of beat-heavy laptop wizardry and grunge ethos to endless collaborations, both as producer and drummer, with west coast mainstays like Devendra Banhart, The Blow, Little Wings, and Bobby Birdman. He's also been recognized by such bigwigs as David Byrne, who name-dropped Bechtolt's production on The Blow's Paper Television in his Artforum Top 10 list, Paris' Centre Georges Pompidou, where he was commissioned for a large-scale performance, and Vibe Magazine, who touted Bechtolt as 'indie rock's Timbaland' in their review of YACHT's I Believe In You. Your Magic Is Real. (2007, Marriage Records)
Evans, whose vocals have been featured on previous YACHT recordings, joined the band full-time this year. She's a science writer, media artist, immigrant, and musician who came of age in the underground noise scene of Los Angeles, playing in difficult bands like the disastrously chaotic Weirdo Begeirdo (Not Not Fun), the shambly Thunder Sundress, and Portland-based The World Court (Tomlab). She has presented her earnestly cosmic PowerPoint performances at MoMA PS1, The Kitchen, and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, and has collaborated with Bechtolt on literally hundreds of projects since they met in 2004.

'remember when' : the red flag to some jerkoff's rant about how things were better back when they were a kid.
seriously, you're better off just closing your mind in or around 1986 or whenever all new music became too weak for your taste.

Hey...it may be an hour away from Vancouver...but it's stil a fucking Island in the middle of the Ocean. It may be an island the size of Scotland, Isreal and Taiwan...but it's still an Island. So, I'm not isolated...but sometimes it sure feels like I am. There is NOBODY here to play music with...going on two years trying to get something started with ANYBODY...still nothing.
You're right though Scott...great records here. Lot's of people move all their stuff here, because they think it's the most beautiful place in Canada. They go broke, can't find a job, and hafta dump all their shit before the catch a plane or ferry back home. Some great record finds...strange guitars...rare books and paper, etc...though alot of that stuff seems to be drying up. Nanaimo is still agreat town to find records...lotsa weird guys "dealing" outa their basements, etc. Lemme know if you plan on coming up to BC anytime...
-
Yeah, I love Nanaimo. It seems part outpost, part freak haven, part shipping/factory town. It is the right kind of dreary and a bit on the heels. There is a commie run book store up there that I've found the most crazy, fucked up political shit - pamphlet supporting Hoxha and Pol Pot, revolutionary manuals, etc. Always makes me a bit nervous hitting US border patrol with a trunk full of that shit and old anarchist books from a store in Vancouver. "Excuse me, Mr Soriano. Can you tell me what you plan on doing with these books?"
-
I bought a few great records cheap in Nanaimo a couple years ago-- lots of metal and soul, not much punk. Cool that a smaller city has two great record stores.
Victoria may not be a huge city (250 000 or so), but it punches way above its weight in punk history. Dishrags, Nomeansno/Hanson Brothers, Day-Glo Abortions, Neos, Red Tide etc is nothing to sneeze at. Also, Ditch is a great store for new stuff and that smaller place in the market area nearby is amazing-- scored a bunch of metal and power-pop records I was looking for there.

Holy fuck...every band people are talking about on here these days SUCKS!
Blank Dogs, Crystal Stilts, Electric Bunnies, etc,etc,etc...and to a lesser degree, band like The Oh sees and Tyvek.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

That Spider EP is the best punk-rock record to come out in...I don't know how many years.
-
You guys have me totally pegged wrong...I mean, I've been on this board for almost 4 years...I came on here for a reason.
Those bands are all about THE SCENE, MAN.
-
weren't you fags all about gorilla angreb last year? they're punk, right?

That Spider EP is the best punk-rock record to come out in...I don't know how many years.
new spits record will be out july 4th
while the spider ep is good, i think people hype it up ALOT. it wasnt the best punk rock record of its year let alone of multiple years. id rather listen to red kross or 13th floor elevators.

I'M RIGHT. YOU'RE WRONG. THE END.

Spider's great, but Catatonic Youth is better and not that far removed musically.
I don't get ppaul's point, though, who wouldn't rather listen to 2 of the best bands in rnr's 50+ year history? I thought we were talking recent quality punk rock releases?

Exactly. Wasn't sure what he was trying to say either.

what i was trying to say, in my very half assed way, is that the best song on that spider ep is "witch cookie" which is really just "scarlet & gold" by the elevators. nothing new.
that catatonic youth 7" is miiiiles better. shit eagle 7" is great punk rock as well.

Agreed. You're alright. Lokum side is the better of the two. Also like Nix "Speed Freaks."

* Human Eye "Kill Pop Culture"
i think this one of their worst songs and a big reason why i was so iffy on their 1st album.
"Stick My Knife" by Clone Defects is a personal fave for best punk songs of this decade.

It's my favorite HE song. There are so many better Clone Defects songs, too. I though CD would be going too far back for this discussion or I'd have listed a bunch of 'em.

i don't know how i lost this topic..
t.depression is half right. i agree with him... since i'm an outsider that don't understand USA people at all. it's true for me too.. slowly terminal boredom (not the zine at all.. the forum) have turn into a near indie-noise forum. while i like some stuff (i like blank dogs.. i don't care about any of the records particularly.. i have lost near everything. but having two or three records of them is great. not a million like they release.. they sound all the same. some vivian girls. love tyvek and eat skull.. but really, vivian girls are indie crap (even if i like their first album). and crystal blabla sucks.
but it's true, on the times of BG or early TB i think that near everyone here except the old mummies that there around here would be laughin about music discussed here, in fact i should be laughin too, but i like some shit. most of them crap. most of them is just noise for people and punk as fuck for very intelligent punks that i don't get at all. i still prefer the matador album of jay reatard over 99% of shit over here
-

We prefer to be called Americans.

america is much bigger than usa sorry

FLIPPER...thats it. everything else is shit

Why is the Pop Punk board being used for all these half-assed threads knocking punk rock? Seriously, there's at least 3 that I can think of.
-
punk sux
-
FLIPPER...thats it. everything else is shit
all ive been listening to besides CCR (best band, real talk) is them and spike in vain. fuck

i guess blank dogs is really original and cool too people who have never heard the cure, joy division or my dad is dead at a really low volume... while simultaneously using the blender.
-
too lazy to look through the thread but Retainers are pretty killer straight forward punk. I like a lot of what I've heard by them especially that Kill My Boss tune.
-

hahahah what the fuck
some good laughs here.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to listen to new 'ordinary' punk music. Didn't they make enough records of that already? Just listen to one of those.
-
I'm not sure why anyone would want to listen to new 'ordinary' punk music. Didn't they make enough records of that already? Just listen to one of those.
The more appropriate question may be: what type of music is now being made for which you can't find a lot of stuff like it from the past to listen to?
Having operated a record shop in the 90s it's kind of amazing how many "exiting", "original" new bands sound just like a lot of indie stuff from 15 years ago that-- unlike KBD punk -- most of these records are just filling 25 cent bins now and totally unknown to most kids making/buying the new music in the same mold (aside the few chosen canonical reps).
For me, I tend to listen to more old stuff but it's the community and the (occasional) fun of new bands writing and playing that's important.
I'm a whole lot quicker to criticize a band as being no fun than derivatory.

i think Eric's Trip is due for a resurgence, eh?

How many people who don't listen to punk rock does it take to change a light bulb?

This is gonna be good!
