Just got Netflix, and reached a mental block where I can't think of much other cool stuff to get my hands on...seen anything worth recommending?
-
"Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind"
"American Splendor"
"Wonderland"
-
Driver 23. cant recommend this enough.
-
"Rear Window"
"Once Upon a Time in the West" the long version, not the edited American release.
-
naked (1993)
drugstore cowboy
who's afraid of virginia woolfe?
the last picture show
-
I love that "Once Upon A Time In the West" extendo-cut!!! I really am glad there seems to be a trend of that these days...the "Good, Bad, Ugly" restoration is amazing.
"Driver 23" looks interesting, I'll have to check that out.
Interesting stuff in queue: "Night of the Hunter" (I've heard people rave about this forever..)
"Terrifying Girls' High School: Lynch Law Classroom" (that Pinky Violence Collection seems pretty crazy)
"Breaking News" (Johnny To's "Election" was top-notch Hong Kong gangster stuff, so I'm looking to check out more by him...)
-
if you haven't already, watch sex and fury and female yakuza tale before starting the pinky violence set.
-
and once upon a time... was originally released as the 2hr 45min version in europe, but paramount edited it for us americans. so we wouldn't get bored, ya know.

To Die For

naked (1993)
great scene in that film about the book of revalations and barcodes being wrapped around the number 666
I just watched a korean film called Oldboy which is worth a look - man locked up in a private prison for 15 years seeks to find out why he was locked away. Love the thought of locking some fucker away that you don't like

400 Blows
Squid and the Whale
Friends Forever (great documentary on the load records band)
Knife in the Water
Hows Your News?
-
"Springbreak"
Anything with Joe Don Baker too.
-
birth of a nation (1915)
-
Wet Hot American Summer
...not a movie, but if i had netflix i'd definitely get the complete Freaks and Geeks series.
-
You really can't ever see "Gung Ho" or "Blame It On Rio" too many times.

FUCKIN' RIGHT!!! "Spring Break" is the shit!!!!
"Hey ladies, they call me OT...cause I go into over time."
Man I need to see that movie again. It's been years. The theme song rules.
Adam, look and see if they have "King Frat." That movie is a classic. It's an Animal House knock-off, but so much better/more retarded. The first half of the movie is about a farting contest. The second is about getting revenge on the prep frat and showing them "who is king fucking frat" because they popped the Belushi-clone's blowup doll/girlfriend Grazilda.
-
I've been watching Slums of Beverly Hills alot lately. Dunno why.
-
because of all the incest.

Good move. Also, that Pinky Violence stuff isn't as killer as one would hope it is. I mean it is good shit, and I can never get enough of naked chicks swordfighting in the snow/rain, but they aren't as out there as you would think. 'Zero Woman: Red Handcuffs' is a good Japsploitation one I saw rently. And I can't recommend 'Black Tight Killers' enough: kind of a Sixites Japanese 'In Like Flint' with a trio of female assassins who utilize bubble gum and 45rpm records as weapons at different points in the film.
-
I second whoever recommended Night of the Hunter. Lady Snowblood is also badass if you like chicks with swords. I rented the British version of The Office on netflix and thought it was the funniest thing in the world and I ended buying both seasons and the Christmas special. Can't think of much else at the moment...

American Movie
Crumb
Eraserhead
Riki-O: The Story of Ricky

"Oldboy" is great! It's fucking rediculous...not for the kids at all. I also agree with whover recomended the Freaks and Geeks box, Just finished it the other night. Amazing series.

it's all about the non-alcoholic keg party.
Freaks and Geeks is one of the saddest and most idiot cancellations in the last 10 years.

i was getting ready to ask if someone knew the name of that movie. i want to check it out.
-
Actually I know for a fact that Adam is into Black Tight Killers. Yeah, it's a fucking awesome movie. This guy who posts on here sometimes under the name Chavo copied that movie for me years ago along with Suzuki Seijun's "Branded To Kill" which comes highly recommended as well.

You should check out "Sympathy For Lady Vengeance", the final part of Park Chan Wook's revenge trilogy (Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, ...Lady Vengeance). Where as "Oldboy" is brutal in a violent sense, "Lady Vengeance" has the same level of brutality but in kind of an emotional sense. One of my favorites of 2005.
As Steve said, I do love "Black Tight Killers". I just saw "Lupin the Third: Strange Psychokinetic Strategy" (the only live-action Lupin thing, I think!) and it's goofiness kinda reminded me of "Killers", except it was jacked up to a cartoonish level. Really funny.

Day Of The Jackyl (1973--assassin stalks De Gaulle)
Fatherland (1994--Rutger Hauer, what if Hitler had won WWII?)

pretty fucking gritty movie.

Yesterday I finally finished "Seven Samurai". Then I watched "The Hustler"... two classics. Today I smoked out of an apple bong and watched "I Drink Your Blood" by myself. That one scene where the black hippie is walking up the stairs and the crazy synthesizer starts moving higher and higher made me freak out a little bit. It was pretty sweet.
Then I watched all the trailers for the other movies that company does and I saw some neat-looking ones aside from the Fulci stuff I had seen already. "Copkillers" looks awesome and I almost kind of want to see "An American Hippie in Israel", but I am sure I would get pissed and throw a beer at my roommate's TV.
Oh yeah, and now I am listening to the Band's "Rock of Ages" live record and it is sweet and makes me wish we still had "The Last Waltz" because that is possibly the coolest movie ever.

pretty fucking gritty movie.
Warren fucking Oates at his grittiest
-
Good call on Alfredo Garcia. I prefer it to the Wild Bunch, myself.
-
Oates is also awesome in Cockfighter.
-
if we're talking Peckinpah, don't forget about 'The Getaway'.
I recently saw that they released 'The Valachi Papers' on DVD for the first time...one of my favorite mob/gangster movies ever, and one of the only that stays pretty true to the original story. great movie, great lead (Bronson).
a friend of mine brought over this 80's vampire movie called 'Near Dark' that i suprisingly liked quite a bit...i'm not a horror guy, and usually '80's vampire movie' means ULTRA-CHEESE but i thought this one was pretty damn good, with the cheese level kept to a minimum.
'the pickpocket' is another great movie i've re-watched recently.
-
If Larry Clark's film "Wassup Rockers" is in your area go check it out. It's his best film yet.
-
Cockfighter is coming in my Netflix probably next week.
-
Cockfighter is a great book too. Monte Hellman should get into heaven just for directing Cockfighter and Two Lane Blacktop. I watched 'Dillinger' with Warren Oates the other night, pretty good.
Near Dark is a classic. Far from Eighties cheese.
Watched Eating Raoul last night. I love that movie. And Mary Woronov.
Anyone seen 2001 Maniacs yet? I was tempted to rent it. I got Wolf Creek instead. Man, that movie FUCKING SUCKED.
-
I saw "Eating Raoul" on USA Up All Night about 12 years ago. I don't remember it.
-

I got fucking conned into seeing this movie in the theater and when it was over, this dude yells out, FUCK THIS MOVIE. 10 bucks I'll never get back. Seriously, fuck this movie. On a related note, the hills have eyes remake was brutal. There was a girl sitting next to me sobbing in the theater when I saw it.

Hey Steve, if you liked "Branded to Kill" (or any other Seijun Suzuki stuff), you've GOTTA check out "Operetta Tanuki Goten", his latest film. The plot is kinda hard to explain (basically a raccoon spirit [of Japanese folklore] falls for a human prince, who's being hunted by his father) but it's all done in a faux-stage setting which lends for a lot of way-out stuff when blue screen/miniatures/etc enter into the fray. It's kind of like last year's "Kamikaze Girls" in the fact that it's a feel-good, happy, surreal fairytale sorta thing. Suzuki is pushing 90, and it's really something to see him put out something just as original and exciting as his sixties stuff!!!!!! I betcha Criterion will end up putting this out in the states...
I also watched "Fearless Fighters" today, which is a fine bit of Taiwanese B-grade kung-fu from the 70's. Heavier on the cheeseball-type stuff (which I kinda prefer anyway), but still bringing some very entertaining fight scenes. Recommended!!

Shit yeah. Eating Raoul is the best. Paul Bartel is the man. His movie Private Parts from 1972 is a must. Killing Words directed by Laura Mana is something else to check out. Something Wild is a good movie. Melanie Griffith looks great in that. Twelve and Holding is a good recent independent worth checking out. Thank You for Smoking is alright. Not huge on that. Made in Britain is killer. Tim Roth as a skinhead. The same guy who directed that has a film called Elephant that's about a bloke who just goes around killing people for an hour straight. The film's shot thru his site. The camera as his eyes. Very strange but boring after a bit. Cape of Good Hope is really good. Duck Season and Lonely Jim are both rockin' little films. The Notorious Bettie Page isn't bad at all. Hard Candy is a crap movie. Loverboy and The Proposition are both good. That last film was written by Nick Cave. Unknown White male is a winner. It's about some guy who wakes up with on a subway train with total memory loss. It's a documentary. Fear X is worthwhile. To Live and Die in L.A. is a compelling '80s action type film.

Wolf Creek is a masterpiece in comparison, 2001 Maniacs is of course gory and cheezy like the original, but also incredibly annoying and beyond lame. Robert Englund should retire.
