Dudes came into the DIY record store we had trying to sell us product so they could buy dope. It was one of those 100+ days and they were looking really bad.

Hell, I was being facetious. But I have an image in my mind of Amebix trying to cover "Sugar Magnolia" for some reason. Or maybe Cargo Cult????

Sublime are one of the best bands ever. Scott, I remember you telling that story and was trying to find it on here a couple weeks back but I couldn't. I can't believe you squandered opportunities to see both Sublime and Game Theory. Such a good band, probably the best 3 piece ever.

Growing up in San Diego, for the entirety of my middle-school/high school I was subjected to this shit constantly; I think that's why I started smoking dope and dropped out, I needed to escape all those assholes.

my mom wouldn't let me buy Sublime CDs because of the "Parental Advisory" on them (same shit with Greenday, my friends needed to make me tapes, I was the biggest loser in 4th grade),

My parents wouldn't let me buy parental advisory CDs when I was in the 4th grade either.  I wanted to buy the really popular Stone Temple Pilots CD but my mom saw titles like "dead and bloated," "sex type thing," it didn't fly, hahaha.  When I borrowed a friends' Nirvana CD "Incesticide," my parents weren't to happy either.  Then when I saw beavis and butthead and thought it was the most hilarious thing in the world MTV was gone too.  I was a bummed kid.

But when I started to listen to actual drug/psychedelic music my parents didn't care cause that was closer to the drug music they got high to back in the day. haha.

It blows my mind that ANYONE with any taste whatsoever could actually listen to, enjoy or respect such utter bilge as this.  Between rampant grateful dead fandom, new age recommendations and now this, Termbo aesthetic standards have apparently collapsed beyond repair. I mean, seriously-- is this a joke?
Title: Re: Sublime
Post by: chrizow on July 16, 2009, 08:05:24 AM
i definitely dug sublime in 1994 or whatever when i was in junior high - along with 311 and all kinds of pop-punk, ska, etc.

i could never listen to those things now, but these bands were kind of my "gateway" into better shit like dub, classic punk, etc., so i am thankful for that.
Title: Re: Sublime
Post by: BelaKarolyi on July 16, 2009, 08:12:33 AM
I think there's an age divide on Sublime - like if you are under 26 they are way more relevant?

I say this cause I was in a bar a couple weeks ago that was doing a karaoke night, and when someone did a Sublime song everyone under 26 went ape shit (especially chicks) and sang along. Meanwhile everyone over like 28 (including me) couldn't figure out what was going on.

i think it is a joke. but if you were in jr. high or high school around the time they were just getting really popular, you couldn't really escape from hearing and listening to them, especially in southern california. at the time, it was ok, but definitely - as many have already stated - unlistenable at this point or any other point.

I'm 28.  This was the band for high school kids who listened to "punk" and either didn't know about or didn't like punk.

Heated exchanges with rollerbladers and rollerbladers' girlfriends who insisted that their Descendents cover was an original.  Rollerbladers, not skaters.  Some of them didn't even rollerblade.  Just wore the clothes.  Don't even know if you can stamp them with the "poser" tag because it's so far removed from even a suburban affectation of '90s "punk."  Most of them were wiggers.  Cool.

One of the girls got attached to one of my friends.  She comes over to his house -- parents outta town -- with a bottle of booze and every Sublime CD ever made.  We drink all of her booze, ditch her CDs somewhere, and one of us barges in on her and the buddy going at it -- that one of us is naked as jaybird, hotdog bun rubberbanded 'round dick, screaming about having a cookout at 1 a.m.

Wouldn't wish a re-run of high school on anyone.

Great band, though.

I ordered this CD from Moon Ska when I was in Middle School that had a picture of a hell orgy on the cover... it arrived in the mail, and after much discussion my parents let me keep it after the drew over the hell orgy with a sharpie.  good times.

Yeah, I keep Sublime songs on my computer (I am under 26 and growing up they were a major "thing") but more often than not I skip past them when they come on... too annoying... but I will always have a place in my heart for them.  They were part of what turned me into a ska kid, which is how I got introduced to punk.

Hmmm... Is this the band that did that song "Beautiful Disaster"?  I kinda like that song.  The twin-guitar leads remind me of The Eagles.  Drummer's pretty good.  Lyrics are retarded.

Sublime is the worst band name ever.  I thought only douchebags were into this band, but what do I know.

Seems like a good next destination now that I've gotten Nine Inch Nails out of my system.

The "gateway to reggae" thing would make sense except that Sublime is better than any actual reggae.

The under 26 thing is true I think, the Sublime cover band I was gonna have with my friends was predicated on the fact that everyone of our generation listened to Sublime at one point and would want to hear their songs in a bar.

To trash Reggae is practically to trash Otis Redding or Fela Kuti or any kind of killer soul music.  Lame.

Have you ever heard Mikey Dread or Alton Ellis or Jackie Mittoo?

...although I will say that Sublime probably never heard any 'reggae' that was made before the mid 70s, it doesn't seem possible for a band with that much negative soul to be into such legit stuff.

This is the first day I've spent any amount of time on Termbo in a good while - likely because I'm too tired to do anything productive at the moment - and seeing this thread made me realize why I can't post here anymore. It's like Invasion of the Body Snatchers or something, all of the intelligent, witty posters are gone and all that's left are the mouth breathers and a bunch of "kidz" who write in text message-ese. I thought Termbo reached its nadir with WNKRS' "Man Thread" but I guess I was wrong. Congrats on a new low.

We speak the same language, sir.

That's just your self-serious disposition and your staggering obliviousness to irony talking, Steve.  You don't even get Sprague Dawley, for chrissakes.

DiMaggio seriously hates reggae but loves Sublime?  Must be a generational thing.

Reggae: Sooner or later everyone gets it, unless they gots shit in they ears.

I hope that dalmation is dead.

Didn't read the entire thread.. but i remembering seeing VH1 behind the music about them a couple years back - and lou dog is in fact DEAD!
WOOO-HOOO!!! This just made my year! Schadenfraude BLOWOUT! I hope they sold his body to a Korean restaurant.

Also its really weird that I actually agree with Maltodextrin on something. When I think of Sublime I think of  rich dumb fucking hippie kids with Bob Marley stickers on their mommys car that only smoke dank nugs. Speaking of, I also hate Bob Marley. Stupid fuck should have taken care of his cancerous toe and now he's dead. Thats just idiotic. Im sorry, but it is. His music is some lame ass crap too. There's way better reggae out there and being a fan of Marley or Sublime just because he "got you into other shit" is lame.

Nope one bad thing does not counteract another bad thing I hate both of these bands with a passion. I guess thats what growing up near a stupid college campus will do to you. I hate stoners. Now by that statement I do not mean people that smoke weed. I just mean the type of people that listen to Sublime / Bob Marley / Phish / Dead (and whatever else your are supposed to like if your stoned) and hit a joint and instantly think they are Shaggy from Scooby Doo. I love pot and have smoked alot of it in my day but I hate the kind of name that these idiots give pot smokers.

Sublime, new age, synths, it's all bullshit.  Jay Reatard should do a split with Sublime. Every song must have auto tune and muszak barouqe pop. Oh fuck thats brilliant. You Termbros will buy anything. Dum Dum Girls are so good. What happened to Vivian girls? Oh they must be out of vogue for for season. Let's listen to ambient sounds and guys with synths. The guitar is the dodo. Way to fuck it up. You've become what you hate. hippies and hipsters.

this thing is still going? man for those of you who like sublime come to california, go down to venice beach and spend some time with the squatter hippies or homeless turned hippy to get more money. listen to them strum on their out of tune acoustic guitars and sing sublime songs. if you still like them after that head up to newport or laguna and im sure you can hear sublime being played out of some bro dudes raised truck, well at least you will hear the bass.  and besides word on the street is they stole all their songs, and everything else they had.

i hang out every day with folks who listen exclusively to shit like the dead, cheese, umphries, and moe.  nothing even remotely musical in my opinion.  theres no songs there, just long collections of notes.  that said, it doesnt bother me at all, i just think it sucks, especially the singing.  jam bands need to nigger it up a little, theyre all too white sounding, and being white is not an excuse.  at least i can listen to rush because they had hooks and real songs.

I'm only 29 and always hated this shit. These were the dudes that made fun of/tried to fight of us for liking the ramones then.
Could not escape this in the 90's.

Also, once in high school I stole a pregnant broads discman from her locker, it had a sublime album in it. Next day I felt bad cause she was pregnant and poor and shit. So I put the discman back in her locker, but I broke the cd up into pieces and dropped them into the heating vents in the lunch room.
I'd like to think I did that baby a favor.

I wonder what she's doing for money right now?

Oh God.  I totally forgot about that year and a half that swing music was popular again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IqH3uliwJY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IqH3uliwJY)

Oddly enough, those were the years in which I discovered acid and mushrooms.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUIdIw6g2tA

THIS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJzWGkgFcTU is a sweet song and even sweeter music video

Squirrel Nut Zippers is the best band.

Cherry Poppin' Daddies is a terrible/awesome name for a band that is mostly liked by middle school students.

I took swing dancing lessons in 1997... but I was 12 so I think it's okay...

And if anyone wants to seriously bro down about REAL ska (none of this pop-ska-punk shit), I would be happy to meet you in another thread.

I think it is unfair and flat out wrong to compare Sublime to 311. WTF!!!  They partied like rock stars, caused ridiculuos havoc, and Sublime ripped up the stage when they played.................. ........... except of course when the lead singer was so faded that he couldnt remember the words. Now if I didnt tell you what band I was talking about you would think I was talking about some hardcore, kick ass band. How are they not punk? And I actually cant think of other bands that sound like them. Guess what? they werent a fucking reggae band. Thats why if you play "pre 70s reggae" and then sublime, they dont sound alike. Should they? Did u say pre 70s reggae? is that the measuring stick? seriously? They arent a rock band or a punk band or a hip hop band. They had a unique blend of styles and I thought they did it extremely well.  They made it to the mainstream, all the guys that picked on you in high school started rockin sublime, and all the chicks u wished you were fuckin now thought sublime was the shit. Sucks for you punker.

Title: Re: Sublime
Post by: Fakepunkers on July 21, 2009, 02:08:35 PM
OK. Find the word groundbreaking in my post and I will give you my car.  Name any band that sounds like sublime!!!! Please don't start naming off bands that no one has ever heard of. And please don't include 311 either. If you think 311 and Sublime are similar bands then we obv have nothing to talk about. Then you obv are fucking deaf!! I honestly think that when Sublime became a mainstream band that "real punkers" couldn't like em. Cmon, you cant be a real punker and listen to mainstream music right? You would get laughed out the punker community in the blink of an eye. I'm not so sure it is their music people dislike. Its the fact that a band that you used to think was cool, now everyone thought they were cool. So suddenly it wasn't so cool to like Sublime.  When the cheerleaders and jocks started getting into Sublime, you were forced to become a hater. Really no choice right? Maybe they made it to the mainstream because they sounded good. Maybe the bands you love that arent apart of that scene, are missing for a reason. Maybe thats because they sound like garbage. Dont hate on a band because their not shitty enough to stay buried in the underground.

I hated Sublime from the second I heard their 40oz. To Freedom tape that I got used because the guy behind the counter had suggested I get it(before they "made it"). REALLY, REALLY, REALLY BAD MUSIC. Not because it's "mainstream", but because it sucks. There's a reason no other band sounds like 'em....'cos they don't want to! Fucking Limp Biscuit shit. 90s garbage. Turntables mixed w/ ska, w/ a white dude in flip-flops rapping...FUCK.

Lets set the record straight. I have no 311 albums and I also do not listen to limp biscuit. And yes I do plan to read that book. And also to set the record straight, a 12 year old prob has a better collection than I do. I do not consider myself a collector so your words mean nothing to me. How the fuck do you know so much about 12 year olds? You got that thriller album in the collection?
