My knowledge of punk is limited I will admit. However, from what I have heard and read about the Ramones, they seem a bit overrated. I hope this is not considered blasphemy or anything. The music is ok, but is it also true that they were below average musicians? Someone suggested to me that they even had studio musicians help them do most of their record. Is thart that true? It just seems to me like maybe their attitude and "punk rock" persona had more to do with them being the face of punk than their actual music did. Any thoughts? Anyone wanna tell me why the Ramones are so revered?

Yes this thread is real. I wanted to get opinions from people who hold them so high. I think Fallout Boy or Panic at the Disco are far superior bands. Maybe they werent as small, or didnt have the same impact that the Ramone did, but they are better punk bands. How many people thought the Ramones were good when they were out? Did they not get booed off the stage on their American tours? It just seems like more of a novelty thing to me. Has anybody else ever heard that the Ramones were a hoax and got exposed while on one of their tour?
Its like that feral cat I caught when I was 10. It was really a house cat that was smaller than a piece of bread but here we are twenty years later and people tell the story of the 20 Ft tiger I caught. The real thing was far less exciting than the myth.

this thread may be a joke, but its actually far more spot on than the pistols one. the ramones were horrible when they started. also, many of their records did have studio musicians to play the guitar leads. its also funny how they claimed to not be a punk band, yet had a song with the lyrics "punk punk, punk rocker, punk punk, a punk rocker, punk punk, punk rocker, punk punk, punk rocker".

The phrase Keyboard Commando would be applicable. That said, I love the Ramones more than many things in life. Also, Walter Lure used to play some of those ghost leads too.
