Title: Tete de Bebe LP now available. French Weird Punk 2006
Post by: SSR on April 30, 2006, 03:55:44 PM
Finally out from the fine person at S-S Records to you the world we love so much. Send us money now for:

Tête de Bébé LP $10 US/Canada, $15 world NEW

Ten releases ago we gave the world Babyhead, our look at the state
of punk rock. The record got great reviews and was touted as what a
compilation should be. To celebrate our twenthieth release, SS, Sr.
put together Tête de Bébé with some help from French rock & roll
luminaries Jack Volt and Seb Normal. This time S-S Records focuses on
12 bands from France and Belgium, all doing very different things to
this thing we like to think of as punk rock. Of course that means
nothing straight forward here. Instead this noise gets a unique
Francophone twist. Bands/artists here are Volt, Crash Normal, Kania
Tieffer, Le Club des Chats, Cheb Samir & the Black Souls of Leviathan,
Cheveu, Crack und Ultra Eczuma, Lawrence Wasser, Lili Z., The Electric
Guitars, Dragibus, & The Normals. For all of you who know that France
has been turning out some of the best rock and roll as of late, this
will be a much expected treat. For those of you who still cling to the
tired cliche that the French can't rock, be prepared to have your world
shattered. On white vinyl.

Brian Turner (WFMU) sez:

Various - Tete de Bebe (S-S)
Oh, the French and their music. Yes, we all love to laugh at the Gitanes-huffing septegenarian speaking obscenely to Whitney Houston, deify the likes of lookers like Gall, Bardot, Dutronc, Hardy, but rarely does the issue of France's absolute kickass punk rock scene get the headlines, which is a damn shame. And unfortunately the stuff that does trickle into American punk consciousness is rife with bands playing up the kooky-beret-and-Pepe-le-Pewisms that frankly bore the shit outta me. On the better side of the coin though, you have Metal Urbain's Stooges-go-synth-destruction "Panic" which might be up there with the best punk singles of all time (and they were still amazing screaming total hell when they reunited for a US tour that stopped at WFMU's Record Fair!), and a whole new breed has taken the torch and blasted the rocket off yet again. Somewhere along the line, California's wickedest weird-punk label S-S has become the prime importer of this stuff, distributing and putting out Francofreaks like Cheveu and Dragibus, and in recent years a few other cool artifacts have trickled into the station from bands like Lili Z and Volt, whom all seem a bit intertwined personnel and vision-wise. This new vinyl comp Tete de Bebe neatly wraps together the more ragged edges of France's more treble-endeared proponents of modern music including the four above-mentioned outfits plus some unknown-to-me peops like Les Club des Chats, Lawrence Wasser, and Cheb Samir and the Black Souls of Leviathan (and I understand a few Belgians are tossed in there). They all share a common thread of crude production, definite fandom of Chrome and maybe some of the LA weirdos of yore like Beelzebub Youth, Nervous Gender and the Screamers, but there's a healthy array of deviation and also awareness of some of the bluesy electromutants like Doo Rag. Great.

I've been playing this thing nonstop. Amazing comp, and unlike anything else. Volt's guitar sound is devastating, and every other track is just as good. Look for a huge interactive article on the weird wave of French underground music up soon at www.Victimoftime.com

The abundance of electrostuffs on this thing caught me off guard at first, but yeah, good comp.  The Volt/Lili Z. tracks on there are two of my favorite songs by both artists.

Lucky you got one of those Pebbles comps. I was given one, too, but by a greasy french dude. They are all gone now. It is great and you are right, that Lili Z song is very cool.
