The Cometbus curated cassette opus of Berkeley bands from the 80's. All unreleased songs mostly from demos he collected/was on. Basic Radio is pre-Op Ivy/Rancid, Violent Coercion is pre-Neurosis and I'm sure there are some others of note I'm forgetting besides the obvious like Crimpshrine, Kamala, Soup, Fang etc. There's some stinkers but a lot of lost gems on here.
All tracks are seperated, MP3's are high quality and I did as much turd polishing as possible but the source material is a tape comp of demo tapes. Despite that the sound quality is really good. It's a big download but it's worth it.
1. Atrocity - Final Option
2. 13 - Well Oh Well
3. Anti-Momb - Police State
4. Crimpshrine - Walk Away
5. Black Gaurd - Planned Attack
6. MFP - Cheese
7. Art Faggots - Creeping Terror
8. Special Forces - America Is Dead
9. Vagrants - Chip Off The Ol' Block
10. Basic Radio - Meat Market
11. Greedy Grady and the Sanfords - Encore
12. Distorted Truth - Cavity Creeps
13. Violent Coercion - House of Terror
14. Spent - Cut Off
15. Fang - Get Off Your High Horse
16. Keg Party Hero - Get Wasted
17. Boi - Hypocrites and Criticism
18. Unskilled Labor - Here We Go Again
19. Kamala and the Karnivores - James' Swimming Pool
20. Intensified Bluebeard - I Like Drinking Mickeys
21. Soup - Glue Song
22. Sweet Baby Jesus - Loving Every Girl In The World
23. Buggerall - Learning How To Smile
24. Deviants - Ready To Die
25. Basic Radio - There Is A Place
26. MFP - Ski Punks
27. Defy - Prejudice
28. SAG - I Had To Kill Some Ants Today
29. Soup - GQU
30. Roadkill - Dylan Was A Loser
31. Ravage - The Idiot
32. 13 - Talking All The Time

PS this here tape says "Reproduce and Distribute This Tape At Will"...so I'm taking that to mean no one will be offended by this internet tape distribution.
-
If anyone downloads this let me know if it comes through okay.
-
Yo! Downloaded it and it came through fine. Thanks for doing this.
I found a .pdf of the tape inlay here:

Might be going against the basic nature of the entire concept from 20 years ago, but this could definitely benefit from a vinyl reissue...warts and all.

I remember having a tape similar(package wise)to this. It was called Benicia By the Bay....anybody know was that a Cometbus thing...I'm pretty sure Pinhead Gunpowder were on it. Gonna have to check Lest We Forget out.
-
That Benicia tape was compiled and released by Paul Curran (Crimpshrine, Surrender, MRR dude). He's from Benicia (reprezizent!). I think it was just called "Benicia..." ("Benicia By The Bay" is the PHGP tune), but I may be wrong. Anyway, that's a great tape as well. The Fuzz Zone (??? I think that's what they were called ???) songs rule! Fuck, you've inspired me to dig that out and have a listen...
If anyone has a complete list with tracks of the BBT Tapes or (specifically) the tapes that Aaron Cometbus or David Hayes did, please share. I know Barry from Red Devil Records had a band on one of them (singing a song about Top Dog!!!)...
I still firmly believe that David Hayes is THE MASTER OF THE COMPILATION.

The song Toxic Dog by Public Enema on the Lest We Forget Tape is about Top Dog, if I remember correctly. Not sure if that's the song you're thinking of.
It doesn't have track listings, but this myspace page for Take A Day Records has a list of the tapes co-released with Aaron Cometbus:

I've got a copy of the Yogi Cometbus Audio Magazine and the Benecia tape, but don't remember much about them, except that the Audio Magazine only had a handful of songs, the rest being interviews. If I can find it, I'll post the song titles.

I actually put it on here because I assumed that's where it would get moved. I'm actually about to start a tape download thread in the general music shit area though.

Ya' i remember being a kid in clevo, ohio diggin' all those very small records comps.....I remember liking the hell out of four two pudding....anybody have a link for that. Ya' sure there was Offspring on their(it wasn't so bad),Screeching Weasel-i wanna be a Homosexual,Fuel,Samiam, blah blah, blah. Anyways I was 16,shit I still listen to Crimpshrine,Samiam,etc.............
-
It's kind of a bummer how he fell off. Especially with the comps. Then again maybe there just aren't as many good bands around...
-
Cool, I just found the cover of this tape while going through a box of tapes I hadn't looked in forever, but couldn't find the tape itself. Thanks.

I concur!
Thanks for posting this Steve. I'm reading that book about the Bay Area scene right now (Gimmie Something Better), and just hit the late-80s. I wanted to listen to these tapes to hear all the pre-(insert band) stuff mentioned in the book.

"I decided to start a record label and put out a Corrupted Morals 7". At the same time, The Hippy was starting a label too. We joined forces and started Lookout Records. I was not an employee, It was a partnership. For the 2 years that we did Lookout, the label was under my name. When I quit, I told him I wanted nothing to do with the label, for better or worse, thereby screwing myself out of at least a million dollars with one simple verbal statement..."
