Anyone from here? I'm visiting next weekend. Never been, would like some ideas on places to go to. Thanks!
-
Lost coast
-
It's all I can do for now so, shoot.
-
i heard the weed is good.
-
the redwoods? The park (state?national?) that has the redwood that you can drive through is pretty cool. I've only been to Eureka, but my understanding is that Arcata is "cooler" in terms of things to do. I could be way off.
I wish I was still in contact with my family who live up there. They had this crazy house, their front "yard" was the redwoods. They built an awesome treehouse in one, and had swings in some of the others... you'd could swing so high in those things! None of this information is helpful to you, but I just sent a message to a friend of mine who spends a lot of time there. I'll let you know of what he tells me.
I've always wanted to go to the Lost Coast... someday
-
here ya go:
guess it depends on what your friend likes to do and what the weather is like when they are there.
There are really nice places to go hiking and several dramatic beaches. North of town there is a cool place to hike and this awesome place called fern canyon where there are ferns growing on vertical walls on this little windy canyon.
I think they filmed some scenes in Jurassic park II there.
We saw a bunch of elk.
-
Ah, thanks kelsey!
My boyfriend grew up there so I guess he will show me stuff but I was seeing if any one knew of cool things that maybe he didn't know about?
Never heard of Lost Coast... sounds eerie!

Here's a rundown of wacky redwood-tree-related attractions in the area (mostly on the drive up there)....
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2043
I can definitely attest to the Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree in Leggett being a waste of money. But I've not driven through any of the other trees.
Arcata is kinda like the Davis to Sacto's Eureka...the college town that's a lot smaller, yet sometimes is the hub of most of the really good show activity. But while Davis has been down and Sacto up, such is the case up there, I think. There's been a few warehouse-type venues in Eureka getting more active. There's also the teen center for the entire area which is almost on the other side of Humboldt Bay in the tinier town of Manila. It's called the Placebo and has been having more regular shows again. The whole area is connected by buslines.
Go to the cheese factory in Lolita...just a bit south of Eureka. Load up on samples. Good stuff!
Lost Coast is just the section of coastline which is very isolated due to the lack of a coastal highway. Several parts of it are only explorable by foot or by boat. The only town in the vicinity of this stretch of coastline is tiny Petrolia...a bit inland, actually.

know of any record stores or good food places?

Really? Maybe he knows Robert's mom who's been living up there in Whitethorn for the last 20 years. It is a very small community.
You definitely need to go to Lost Coast. There's nothing eerie about it. They just call it that cuz that stretch of the coast is too steep and rugged that they couldn't build a freeway or a road along it. But because of the roughness, it preserved much of the nature. It is beautiful.

Whats her name? Does she work at shoppe or something?
I know he went to Whitethorn elementary. Ooooo!
-
You simply MUST eat breakfast at Samoa Cookhouse. Jesus...so awesome. Place is a landmark.
I vaguely remember there being a pretty good record store on the square in Arcata, though it may be gone now (haven't been up there in over 10 years).
-
SAMOA COOK HOUSE RULES!
That record store was always good for one killer record a visit.
Found a Pagans Not Now No Way there for $2.50.
Stop panting, that was 20 years ago.

She doesn't work in a shop, but her husband Kent's been working at the lumber/retail store by Whitethorn post office for the last 20 years. He's like, 7 ft tall and looks like Paul Bunyan. You can't miss him.
SAMOA COOK HOUSE RULES!
I thought this said SAMOA COCK HOUSE for a second...

Try asking a local, nincompoop.

i'm moving here. fuck you bay area.

By mid-November, when you haven't seen a good live band in several weeks, and the constant rain and drizzle makes everything smell like mold and patchouli, you might regret ever having said that.
That's why Humboldt always strikes me as the ultimate "nice to visit/wouldn't wanna live there" kinda place.
-
what's up to my boy gram (of dope) from HC that saw my dead button on haight when i was strolling and sold me some righteous smoke

i love rain,
rent here is 200 bucks a month for a huge ass house. i got a radio show slot at redwood community radio.
so over living in a city. i haven't slept this good in so long.
-
Are you the first person to post to the Cities child board to actually move to the city they were curious about?
That was awfully fast, too!
I do honestly hope you remain happy with your decision. The place does have a certain mystique about it that I was always kinda drawn to. I do actually like everything about it except for the relative remoteness of it.
-
Yeah, Humbolt is a really really cool place until you realize that it really is in the middle of nowhere, everywhere but Arcate (and including but less so) has a meth problem, and the rainfall can exceed 100 inches. It is also one of the most beautiful places in America and weed is all but legal, so I guess it balances out.
If I was married and could get a good job there, I would be there in an instant.
I guess my top three places to live are
1) Big Sur
2) Humbolt
3) San Diego
-
Heather, DO IT!! Learn how to grow weed and bring some down to me!!!
-
hell yeah
-
Moving out at the end of this month is not giving Brace proper notice, though.
-
this is the place i'm going to possibly be moving to:

I could live up there easy.
Actually, I'd love to live further in
some place like Petrolia on the Lost Coast.
Gotta friend who built his house there,
up top a hill, with a view of the ocean and the Mattole River.
He's got a half acre of old growth on his property
and is totally off the grid.
He teaches at Columbia one class a year
and then goes back to paradise.
But given the choice between there and Big Sur I'd take Big Sur.
Post office + internet connection + road in and out is all I need.

There was a few years in the '90s when the Ne'er do Wells, Brent's TV and a few other bands were up there. Since then very very occasional shows. There was a while when Rocketship's Dustin Reske was living up there and recording bands, so every once in a while you'd get a house party happening somewhere. I'm not sure how active Dustin is. Smiller might know. In any case, your feeling that the music scene is lacking is pretty right on. Could be that there are some freaks there waiting to bust out and a good radio show is all they need to latch on to.
-
damn it. i'm gonna be friend-less up there.
-
Maybe, maybe not. There are a lot of freaks up there. They kinda get dwarfed by the potheads, but they are out there. If you are doing a radio show, it is pretty much flying a freak flag. People are pretty friendly up there, too. Just stay out of local politics. It is pretty fucking factional and can get very vindictive.
-
i did a three and a half hour radio show for the first time last weekend, i got three phone calls but missed every one of them because i was way too hectic trying to figure everything out. i had never done anything like that before, no dj sets or anything. i didn't have a planned playlist, everything i played i picked on the spot and messed up a bunch with playing songs with curse words in them, stopped songs too soon, all the obvious mess ups.
i'm excited for the next time i'm on, definitely going to pick songs beforehand and answer the phone in time.
-
Word of advise: Be careful about the curse words in songs. Some stations/towns doesn't matter, but the local right wing Christians up there monitor public/college radio pretty aggressively and have the FCC on speed dial. Though this was quite a while ago, a friend of mine got her show yanked when a band kept repeating the word "penis" during a live airshot.
-
yeah, got a bit chewed out (in a very nice way though) because i rushed to pick a song and chose "automatic" by gg allin and the jabbers. switched it off as soon as i realized.
-
damn it. i'm gonna be friend-less up there.
not if you're into doing/making speed or grow/smoke pot or into the Reggae on the River thing they have up there every year.
oh, and let's not forget about that kid in Whitethorn who was dealing speed (or pot...I forgot) to the gang members in Oakland. Apparently, there was an altercation of some sort and the poor kid ended up getting shot in the head and was found in that river dead. It seems like a lot of weird shit happens up there cuz it's so lawless. It is kind of like the wild wild west. You better have a gun if you're gonna live up there. I'm not kidding.
Don't get me wrong though, I do love Humboldt. It is very beautiful up there. I've been going there since the late 90s to visit my mother in law. And every time I'm up there, it does make me want to move there a little bit. But I just wouldn't cuz I know I'll get bored to tears in a month or two.
-
hi.
bands please play here in Eureka or Arcata.
pppleeaaseee...

You'll see bands up there! Way more than I'll see in Santa Rosa.
-
Fang is playing tonight
Kurt Vile And The Violators tomorrow
I have faith in Humboldt now.
-
Dunno if someone already mentioned this, but there was a special on A&E tonight I watched called "Pot City" or something about the explosion of grow houses in Arcada.
I looked into some places in Humboldt County when I lived in S.F. - I always wanted to visit, I'm jealous! Maybe someday I'll make it out there. I'm kind of a nerd when it comes to hiking and nature, and I've pretty much exhausted all opportunities for that in Indiana.
-
Saw FANG last night and there was a whopping total of about 10 people looking very bored.
-
But if you wanna see at least ten times that many people looking really stoked, go see a white reggae band next time one plays to town.
-
No thanks.
-
3 calls for a 3 hour radio show isn't that bad.
-
I'll give people mad weed if they come tour/play here. PLZZZZ
-
i'll come play an acoustic set for a qp
-
Parliament is playing in Jan. Waddup.
