I decided on San Fran in November whenever Slumberland does that big show or whatever.

Things I want to do:

-See Noddzz and other SF bands
-Make Andy take me eating

Andy doesn't fuck around with food...you'll need a giant bottle of Tums! (and a skirt with elastic waist)

Okay, this is important.  When should I come? Are there any KILLER shows planned in Nov or Dec?

I'd say come out in Oct for Budget Rock, if that was a possibility.

Early November looks good:
11/1:  Uptown, Oakland - Shonen Knife, Ty Segall, Dreamdate
11/5:  Hemlock, S.F. - Blues Control, Hank IV
11/7:  Hemlock, S.F.  - Finches, Little Wings, Mantles
11/8:  McLaren Hall, S.F.  KUSF Rock 'n' Swap
11/11:  Hemlock - Jad Fair, Grass Widow
11/13: Hemlock - Lover!

Plenty more shit as well, I'm sure.

Oh sweet! Thanks Mitch... I wanted to come out for Budget Rock but it's the same week as CMJ so I kind of feel stupid leaving town when so so so many bands will be coming through NY for that, and I also have a show I booked that week.  Bummer.

Oh, and BTW, I was asking Chris Gunn who I should hang out with when I come out and he said "This guy Mitch Cardwell comes to mind".

November sounds good, as far as getting time off from work.

Thanks!

Also, probz gonna be coming with my buddy Teva who is from there...

I've been considering taking a trip (back) to S.F., too... I lived there in '07/'08 but for various reasons it was a largely unpleasent experience for me. I didn't get to go to that many shows.

I lived in the Tenderloin and rarely ventured out of my neighborhood, so I don't know a ton of good restaurants or anything. I ate at Sushi Rika on Bush St. a lot because it was like a block from my apartment. Ozone Thai (near Polk) was also pretty good, I remember. There was also a little tiny breakfast cafe place sorta near where I lived that was the fucking shit but I can't remember the name of it. They had good cornbread.

IF I ever do make it back out there, some of you guys better come hang out with me, because most of the people I know who live there I have no interest in seeing. And probably wouldn't take me to very good shows.

Dottie's True Blue?

I understand how you feel about SF. I've lived in The Mission for the past ten years, but mostly because of work, I don't make it to as many shows as I did when I didn't live in the city during the 90's. Also, I'm ready to move to a cheap and quiet place in the middle of nowhere any day now. Yes I'll miss Tommy's and Cancun and Mr. Pickles and Guitar Wolf at Bottom of the Hill, but life goes on...

Many of the bay area shows are listed here-
http://jon.luini.com/thelist/date.html (http://jon.luini.com/thelist/date.html)
It doesn't have anything listed for 12/2 to 12/6 yet, but I'm sure you can check back in a month or so and there'll be more stuff on there.

I think this is an El Nino year again, so bring your rain boots. We got soaked yesterday.

This is coming up soon-ish.  Dec 3-6. ARE THERE ANY GOOD SHOWS? Who wants to hang? LET'S PARTY!

I don't really smoke pot but I'll drink whatever weird stuff you west-coasters drink and do your finest uppers, if you got'em.

no. you have to drink fernet.
Title: Re: SAN FRAN VACATION
Post by: Mitch on November 17, 2009, 01:23:40 PM
Ginger Ale back with Fernet is good, goes well together.  A bit much, as Fernet doesn't really need a chaser like a shot of whiskey might, but whatever.
Title: Re: SAN FRAN VACATION
Post by: albondigas on November 17, 2009, 01:31:23 PM
I've always preferred the ginger ale chaser or "back".  I find it to be a refreshing palette cleanser. Fernet solo is a little difficult for me to drink.

i visited SF from NY in may and i didn't think it was warm at all.  in fact, i'd say SF was fucking colder than NY at that time of year.  "micro-climates"

all the fruit and vegetables in the bay area are great because that stuff is grown like right there.  if you go to berkley, go to this pizza place called the cheese board.  i know i know, pizza outside of NY is stupid.  just do it.  i had a fuckin wacky slice at this place with cilantro, feta, lime, corn - IT RULED.
Title: Re: SAN FRAN VACATION
Post by: Hugh Jass on November 17, 2009, 02:25:54 PM
You need to get a churro relleno (I recommend cajeta) with an ice cream chaser from Cinco De Mayo. If the Tepache man is there with his Rascal, that would be the perfect aperitif.

I took a single sip of Fernet once and was horrified. It tasted like Stevie Nicks' attic. Never again.

SERIOUSLY.  So big and delicious and sweet that I got a tummyache every time I ate one but did not care.

Jager for grown-ups is pretty apt.  Mitch, you turned me on to it right when I moved here.  I've grown to like it a lot.

It's for those times when your stomach is kinda jacked from drinking too much the night before and you can't handle whiskey.  I used to get hammered whenever I'd buy a bottle of it because it goes down easy and I thought the proof was low.  But the proof is as high as any liquor and it'll get you going real good.

This past Sunday I walked around all day with some friends and worked through nearly a bottle of it in my backpack.  True on the bad shits but it makes for a good afternoon/evening drunk and lets you go to sleep easy.
Title: Re: SAN FRAN VACATION
Post by: SteveBeat on November 20, 2009, 06:59:32 AM
jager is the least sophisticated liquor ever.  think of anyone you've ever seen wearing jager gear that wasn't a big-titted broad giving it away.  however, i will drink a shot of jager ANYTIME.
Title: Re: SAN FRAN VACATION
Post by: Erin S on November 20, 2009, 07:20:18 AM
The first time I ever got drunk drunk, I was like 15 or 16, was on Jager. I threw up in my friends bathroom and then curled up on his filthy carpet while cats climbed all over me. One of them peed on my winter coat, and I had to throw it away. I don't think I've drank it since then.

I would prefer straight vodka or even rum.

The only straight liquor I can really do shots of is tequila. A few weeks ago someone bought me a shot of Maker's Mark at a bar and I felt like I was gonna die. Weak.

Take BART to Richmond ($5 ea way) and then hop Amtrak ($22 ea way) to Sacto. Its about 2 1/2 hours if you time it right.

Less of a chance you will see in in Sacto than in SF. The only times I've seen Matt Roberts in SF is at his work. The only people I know that I've ever bumped into on the street is denkinger, Ken Sanderson, and Mike Lucas/Marie D., who've I've ran into about a dozen times mostly on public transit. I dont know why.

The amtrak ride to Sacto is pretty nice.. and the richmond connection is convenient as fuck.
They've got a food/booze car, so you can party your way there (or just BYOB)

The scenery en route is pretty cool too.

I support this plan.  I get into the airport at like 12:30. Will go anywhere that I can get to via pub-trans.

Ray's back in the country, Impediments are slated to play at the Knockout on the same night as the Pissed Off Petes show. I think I'm gonna try and go to both, wish someone had a car (even though it's like a fifteen minutes 14 ride)

I was there last week to return Christy's camera. Didn't seem too bad.

That's Joey the cat at the record store I used to work at in Sacramento, unmistakably, from the dirty carpet, crammed rows of shitty 45s, "Dire Straits" 45 leader card????  It's definitely Records.  That cat was a nasty little fucker who pissed all over the records, but the owner was just about as crazy and took awful care of her.

Thought I recognized that cat.

Rachel, if you haven't got a place to crash Saturday night, you can crash at my house. There's a Husbands/Loosin Streaks/Primitivas show at El Rio and I'm close by. lemme know.

Title: Re: SAN FRAN VACATION- THANKS EVERYONE!
Post by: abusive_husband on December 07, 2009, 06:52:12 AM
Thanks so much to everyone who was so great in San Francisco!

Special thanks to:

Heather for getting super drunk with me and helping me party all night.

Julia for being the chillest chick I've met in a long time.  Thanks for bringing me to food and showing me around Berkeley and making me feel old by letting me buy you beer.  Patrick rules too.

Andy for being the chillest bro.  Your band rules, the food we ate ruled, can't wait to chow down on some knishes when you make it out here with your awesome wife.

Zach- thanks for letting me crash at your place and thanks for knowing how awesome pop music is.  SEND ME SHIT.

Dan for the drugs.

BRACE for not being as mean to me as people thought you were going to be.

Mitch for that beer.

I had a great time, loved everyone except for that one guy in the Impediments who threw a beer at my head and then acted like I was a bitch.  Everyone is free to crash with me in NY if they ever need to.
