Title: attn: New Orleans folks or people that have visited there before...
Post by: TakingPillsToPower on October 06, 2009, 05:41:44 PM

Im going to New Orleans for my first time soon. Anyone recommend any cool places to check out, eat, music, off the beaten places....
Also if anyone knows of any cheap places to stay or anyone willing to host 3 or 4 dudes for 3 nights? Were chill folks from Miami that just want to have good time and we'll clean up:)

Make sure you get one of those legitimate Po' Boys that people used to post about on here, and then tell me about it. Maybe take a pic.

Man! Glad you're going to N.O. I'm from there but don't live there anymore. I'm actually coming in 26th Oct until Nov. 9 so I'm just missing you. Ever sense I read this my mouth has been watering. Here are some suggestions. walk=5-15 minutes

Poboys:
Jacques-Imo's - The deep fried roast beef poboy or as I like to call it "the eliminator". This is a resteraunt and pretty expensive but this sandwich is totally affordable. If you go, defintely get the Shrimp and Alligator Sausage Cheesecake. Ah! here's the menu:http://www.jacquesimoscafe.com/menu.htmYou could take the streetcar with a walk. If you there on a tuesday you could check out the rebirth brassband at the Maple leaf which is right there.

Crabby Jacks- this is the same guy that owns the above. I'm pretty sure they also serve "the eliminator". Otherwise i've heard mixed reviews. Need a car.

Parasol's Restaurant & Bar: good roast beef poboy and just a neighborhood bar. great area (garden district/ irish channel). street car with a little walk

Zimmermans- in my humble opinion this is one of the best fried shrimp poboys in the city. It's on the way to the lakefront so you would need a car.

otherwise you can pretty much get a poboy anywhere, and they can vary form great to crap. I go to this gas station and get em for like $5 and am pretty satisfied.

Oysters:

Casamento's - the oyster loaf. if you read the goner link you got the idea. street car witha walk

Drago's Seafood Restaurant - holy smokes. the original charboiled oyster. these are so good i can't even explain. of course they are expensive. the original is in Fat city (Metairie) but they opened one up in the huge Hilton by the Riverwalk.

Acme Oyster House is soso. Really touristy. Food is ok.

Sandwiches:

Central Grocery is good for a muffalata especially for the location.

Steins Deli- Uptown - the best Reuben i've ever had but i'm a sothern boy so take it for what it's worth. They also have the Sam - Hot Pastrami, Swiss, Cole Slaw on Rye with Russian Dressing. These are expensive ($12) and when I paid for it the first time I swore I would boycott the place because of the prices. i've been back ten times and can't wait to get there when I come back in. (This place is from New York so really no New Orleans about it).

Port of Call - pretty damn good burgers serve with a baked potatoe. Really close to Frenchman street which you may want to visit.

High end:

Luke- This is one of John Besh's places. Crazy ass meat dishes (mostly starters). check out the menu. Lunch may be affordable. Boudin blood sausage is very good. http://www.lukeneworleans.com/  (CBD)

Pascals Manales- Original Pascal's Barbeque Shrimp (streetcar)

Well, I hope this helps. I missing a ton good places and haven't even started mentioning bars, but there easy to find. Stay away from Bourbon. Everyone else gave great suggestions. I hope you have fun and let me know if you tried any of these places. If you have any questions just post it.

Bring bigger pants!

Bar wise, I had a lot of fun at Mimi's and the R Bar last time I was in New Orleans.  both are in the Marigny, which is the neighborhood east of the French Quarter (cross Esplanade and you're there).

going down for the weekend with my sister.  what - if any - record stores have re-opened?  i haven't been since a year after the storm and it was the shortest trip of my life.  literally got out, walked around and drove home.

anything happening besides the cowboys game?

Domino Sound Record Shack (2557 Bayou Road) - they only take cash.

May have luck at Jim Russell's Records (1837 Magazine Street) if you dig for a bit.

Matty from the Royal Pendletons co-DJs so-called 'Mod Dance Party' on Saturday night at the Saturn Bar.  There should be lotsa trim there.  Unfortunately, the selection of tunes they play is mostly '60s 'hits', if I recall, to keep the young crowd into it, but maybe you can lean on Matty for some requests.

Sounds about like every 'sixties nite' I've been to that's not homo-neurotic shut-in's arguing about funk or northern soul.  Matt's a nice dude though.

Thanks for the 'fo.

i went there once for a garage sale they had after antoinette (his wife) died.  sadly i got there too late to find any good stuff, but the place was pretty amazing.  the best part is the wax dummy of ernie that antoinette brought around with her after he died!  i'm not sure if it's currently open and operating now but it should be.
