I recently joined an old friend and re-started a label that had been dormant since the early 2000's. We just got the test pressings, gave our approval, and now production is rolling on a new 12"EP.
I have been annoyed more than once by labels doing pre-orders and then having to wait more than expected because either the label doesn't have its shit together, is using the pre-order to pay for production, has not even approved the tests pressings, it is run by mongoloids, etc..... Also, some labels, when they count on having a super over hyped limited release, well sell out of copies before the record is even out, therefore fucking over any future "fan" of said record.
Mixed feelings here.

If you have to ask this question, I'd say you should rethink your decision to re-start your label.
-
why is that?

You pretty much just answered your own question. If your reason for doing pre-orders is to raise money to put out records, you shouldn't be putting out records.
-
well, yeah... i didn't say we were doing that though. Some labels clearly offer pre-orders to raise money and then take forever to actually press the records, for sure. Our shit is already in production and paid for... I'm just wondering if people think it's good/bad when labels offer pre-orders for their releases.
-
if you already have things paid for, know you can send it out on time, and are worried that people won't be able to find the album in stores than a pre-order can make sense.
but in reality
buy a record in a record store > ordering a record > pre ordering a record.
-
you're just gonna put out something awful so don't even bother
save a tree and some petrol
-
sorry to disappoint you Steve, it's already coming out
-
JUST SAY NO TO PRE-ORDERS.
-
I don't want my record to come with a dick painted on it, or a free bandana, I don't want to wait months to hear it either, I just woonaa listen to the record maaaaaan.

pre-orders blow. I've yet to read a good reason for a pre-order
