Sound Exchange
1846 Richmond Ave

Vinal Edge [sic]
13171 Veterans Memorial Dr

both can be pretty hit-or-miss, but if you're gonna be in houston anyway, they're worth checking out. vinal edge is quite a ways out and it's pretty chaotic inside, but i've found some really great stuff there and it's usually priced fairly. sound exchange is a little pricier, but i've still found some good stuff/good deals there.

Tin Roof BBQ is good but it may not be worth the drive depending on what part of the city you're staying in. Virgie's BBQ and Pierson and Company are good, too. if you want really good BBQ you should consider taking a day trip outside of the city... Louie Mueller in Taylor, TX is great.

other good restaurants in houston: El Pueblito Place has good fish tacos/coastal central american food. if you like vietnamese food at all, Les Givrals (travis st and congress st) is great for good n' cheap vietnamese sandwiches. The Breakfast Klub is great for breakfast/brunch on weekends, but get there early or late because the line can be insane. Catalina Coffee has the best coffee I've had in houston. it's pretty cutesy/hip, but they really do have great coffee and good pastries.

Montrose and The Heights are the "cool" parts of houston. there are a lot of thrift/antique stores in each and they're both worth walking around, but i wouldn't expect to find anything great.

the Menil Collection is free and Rothko Chapel is worth a visit.
