thinking about going there for a few days after xmas to check out a few museums and tea bag some teabaggers.
any residents or recent visitors have any cultural suggestions? besides the obvious huge museums which i will definitely hit.

nobody???!! are you serious?
you're all fucking terrorists

Never been myself but my current boss has lots of great stories about DC when he worked for Verizon:
- burnt out cars
- dried blood on sidewalks
- chalk outlines of bodies
- toothless hookers offering blowjobs for a McDonalds Extra Value Meal
He says DC is the most fucked up place he's ever been to.
On a more serious note I think DC is a place you visit for the typical shit. I know a guy with family in Arlington so he's quite familiar with DC. He says it's best not to wonder too far if you don't know where you're headed and to opt for public transport instead of driving.

If you're only going to be there for a couple days, see the museums as much as possible, with short breaks to eat at good restaurants like Ben's Chili Bowl (kind of far from the museums) or Two Amys (also far). Take in a movie at the Uptown one night. As of three years ago, bars were pretty much a bust. Nightlife was pretty much a bust. You could go to Georgetown and get an expensive tattoo at Jinx Proof, then drown your sorrows in greasy vegetarian Chinese food at Harmony.
Actually, if the weather isn't insanely cold, you should check out the National Zoo. Free and a great way to spend a sunny afternoon if you like walking around.
I'll be back in town from the 31st - 4th, but I am spending the majority of my time at friends' houses playing Wii and drinking six packs of Dogfish Head.

Smash and Crooked Beat are the best two record stores in DC and they're right next to each other near 18th/Columbia (I think). It's a bit of a walk from a Metro stop but that neighborhood has some pretty good food so it's worth it.
Also, I still have leftover childish awe at the memorials. Lincoln, Jefferson, FDR, wars (especially Vietnam), whatever. Great places.

I wouldn't call the bars in DC a bust. A good majority of the women look like mules though.
The Raven
The Black Cat
Red Derby
The Toledo Lounge
Mambo Room
all have their "charm"
and the H-Street district is up and coming.. I'd suggest going out there

DC can be fun. I lived there up until a few years ago. If you're going record shopping, Crooked Beat and Smash are both on 18th St. in Adams Morgan. If you like Ethiopian food, I think DC has more restaurants per capita than anywhere else. Futher down 18th st. near S (I think) is Red Onion which always had some pretty interesting records. There's also SOM Records on 14th St. near T.
I would avoid going to bars on H St. The place is kind of pathetic - one developer decided to cash in and open lots of 'hip' bars in a part of town that there is still no reason to ever go to. They were always lame when I went. The Black Cat on 14th always has something going on, and my choice for the best bar to just hangout at would be Pharmacy on 18th.

every time i am there i stay at the grand hyatt on the company dime so it's nothing but for the record there are a ton of hot babes in DC and i love eating at SUSHI AOI and drinking at the brickskellar was super-sick. big thumbs-up. pick me up some tie-dye on pennsylvania ave.

I've always wanted to party in DC, I don't know why. Hopefully someday soon.
-
Go to H-Street if you wanna get killed. U-Street's where it's at.
-
You sound like a pussy. There enough white people milling about H-Street to garner police presence. You don't have to worry bout them mean tough colored savages.
-
Plus, if H-Street is pathetic what the fuck is Adam's morgan? DC night life isn't going to blow the fucking socks off any hardened barfly.

Ben's Chili Bowl
If I went by what I see on Travel/Food network shows about DC, I would assume this was the only restaurant in the entire DC metropolitan area. I don't think I've seen a single travel show about DC where they didn't go here. Is it as good as the hype?
-
I'd say so. You can get a half smoke from a street cart, but not many of them will come slathered in chili like you get at Ben's. Unfortunately, it seems like they know how popular they've gotten and raised the prices accordingly. When I was back in December, it was like $12 for a half smoke, chili fries and a soda. Used to be like $8.

Watching cops beat up frat dudes in Adams Morgan is always a good time

this is why its a great reason to go to DC
