Title: Perhaps the Bad Seeds should just be an instrumental group
Post by: southern steve on December 07, 2009, 05:08:07 PM
I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds last night on the BBC and it sucked.

He sounded like some dumb macho arsehole pretending to be an American.

This is sad because I actually want to like Nick Cave. He represents a tradition of independent Australian rock and roll that really appeals to me. I like the Saints. I like the Scientists. I even like the Beasts of Bourbon and the Cruel Sea. So why should I not like Nick Cave?

I guess the reason is that he can't sing and I wish he'd just shut up. The band actually sound pretty good a lot of the time. I think they should fire him and continue as an instrumental group.

Congratulations. You seem to grasp the fundamental difference between liking something "on principle" (dumb) and liking something for its intrinsic qualities (smart). The path you choose to take will likely determine the extent of your future involvement in TermBo discourse.

Great, another contrarian named Steve.

Anyway there is a very fine line between Nocturama and middle of the road adult oriented singer/songwriter music for grown ups.

I went to see him in San Francisco(about a year ago?) and he put on a great show....ya the Bad seeds are a big part of it...however Nick Cave's balding, mustached self was all over the place...he put most younger bands to shame.

Nick Cave's grand, it's just a pity he has such an obsessively repulsive fanbase whom often proclaim Nick as The Second Coming of Christ, that you eventually consider it may be necessary to go on a amphet-fuelled rampage and smash their fucking faces in until they see some sense, just plain old "tap out", or you get tired/bored. Whichever comes first i guess.

Those Nick Cave obsessives almost never listen to the Birthday Party...
"too noisy and scary"is what I've been told....

The Birthdaty Pary used to be awesome live, especially if they weren't rotten drunk or smacked out or whatever. But I tried listening to Junkyard recently and I found it too noisy and scary as well. I am nearly 40 and I think the Milquetoste genes are kicking in.

But in the glory days that was what Nick Cave was about. Kind of snarling and unintelligible. Now he just sounds lame to me.

Time, the old ememy, has defeated me once again.

I find his voice mostly crap but the birthday party still rule.

i think he should get rid of the bad seeds and continue as a singer/songwriter accompanied by only a guitar and tape loops. like his tracks on that current 93 album.

Nick Cave fans travel those waters that Tom Waits fans drown in. When you start wearing a scarf and a fedora with the David Soul blazer, slit your wrists quickly. These are scary times.

First person to send me an MP3 file of yourself reading the lyrics to "Nocturama" in a James Mason voice will get a $10 gift certificate to Soriano's label from me.

"Bring It On" indeed.

Feb. 15th. Don't just read the lyrics. Get into that shit. Effeminate British Reptiles reading ole fire n' brimstone should be rolling through Sendspace before my tax return gets here.
