I've never been to Portland but my dad goes there on business all the time... He just got back a couple weeks ago with tall tales of being kicked out of some "famous" bar there (don't remember which one) for being drunk and disorderly. He also vouched for Voodoo Donuts. I think they've got a bacon donut there.

Food carts-  a block or so before the main library (downtown at 10th & Yamhill) are great, best burrito at Loco Loco, and right next to it great Thai i don't remember the name of, but food carts are everywhere out there.  Mexican place by the junk shop on Division is pretty dang great too.

Stumptown- try to go to an actual Stumptown cafe (there's at least 4 of them) and it will taste even better, they clean their machines a crazy amount of times a day so it always tasted better than just the places that use their beans.  It should make any naysayer a believer.

Powell's- overrated, overpriced, but they have a ton of stuff, yes.  Across the street tho, down the angled street whose name escapes me now (do not eat the pizza on that corner), they have Counter Media or whatever they're called w/ underground zine/comix/books/vintage nudie mags/whatever.  Oh, and Maakies toys- Drinky Crow!

Strip- Magic Gardens, downtown on 4th/Chinatown had, for example, a girl who would "dance" (lay around checking out how hot she is in the mirror, is more apt) to The Cramps, Silver Apples, various stoner/underground rock, etc. for example.  Mary's always seemed to be living on past glories.  Plus, the mexican food next door closed (it was also very good) closed so i wouldn't say this one unless you're into older dancers, or maybe really into Danzig.  Plus, the strip clubs are very lady-friendly, so maybe you'll get some besides a look.

Record Stores- Exiled (46th or so and Hawthorne) is the best, followed by Mississippi (Mississippi & Shaver) and Discourage (around 16th & SE Morrison) for punk & collectibles if ya got some extra dough- don't bother w/ the rest unless you have a bunch of time on yr hands, (in which case you could be drinking to naked girls somewhere instead)  or you like to buy the same new shit you can buy anywhere.

That frozen waterfall i don't remember the name of probably isn't frozen yet, but the nature is a draw, yes.  That's mostly outside of the city proper tho, which is pretty dirty and filled w/ tons of annoying young(ish) people you may or may not want to talk to.

Finally, don't be tricked into moving there.  Nice place to visit, sucks to live there too long and it's certainly not getting any better.

also, forgot- Voodoo- my faves were the Bacon Maple Bar and the Portland Creme (not to be confused w/ the almost as good McMinnville Creme)

the Gorge in George? I saw the English Beat and Specials there years ago. Phenomenal. Sting headlined, he was not so phenomenal.

Last time I was in Portland we took a friend for his pseudo-bachelor party to Mary's Club. First time I was ever there. Some crazy contortionist girl got up and stripped, first thing she did was dislocate her shoulder and wrap her arms behind her back, we all simultaneously dry heaved. She was cool. I would definitely recommend going there when she's working.... her name's Tori, or Tobi, or something like that.

Woah, I can dislocate my collarbone... I never knew it could help me in the world of exotic dancing.

for a strip clubs, definately go to acropolis, otherwise known as acrop or steaks and legs.  If yer a meateater, the place has super cheap high grade meat (dude that owns it also owns a ranch). Like, $5 quality steaks or $5 hamburgers literally bigger than your head. Oh and there's girls too, but lots of the seating is arranged where you're not an asshole if you don't tip.

theres also a stripperokie night somewhere, where you go up and do kariokie while a girl strips next to you.
Food carts are good, but pricey. "Jam" on Hawthorne and 22nd or somewhere has really good breakfast, and the best homeade jam i've ever had (jalepeno apricot, strawberry mango, ect). Some really good pho places on the NE side. Powells might be pricey, but the used books are priced reasonably and you could easily spend a day there. Exiled records is the shit. Mississippi good too, discouraged and the rest = ehhh. favorite thing to do in portland is walk around and steal peoples fruits and vegetables (rasperries, blackberries, apples, plums) and bake fuckin pies and shit. and multnomah falls does rule. hot springs rule if you don't mind ukelele playing hippie dipshit kids.

Even if you're a prude that thinks strip clubs are a bane of society, I recommend the Acrop because the steaks are that good and so incredibly cheap. I've had a $7 steak that was the equal to $29 steaks at places where you can go with your family but only if you dress up a little bit. There is virtually no stigma associated with going to a strip club there.

If you wanna eat a really great and unique breakfast, try the trout hash at Broder.

If you wanna feast like kings, round up six or seven other people and go to Wong's King for Chinese and get eight entrees. For about 10-12 bucks per head, you will never have as fantastic a spread of food as that. You will think you just raped and plundered with some Vikings and had a triumphant gorge-fest. Someone's gotta order up a whole roasted duck. If I lived in PDX, a Wong's King feast would need to become a monthly ritual.

Hung Far Low moved to out 82nd. That bar/lounge at the original location was awesome. It was so overly lit in the dining area, but if you watched someone walk into the bar, they disappear into darkness within two steps! They used to play KISN AM in there before that station went under....really soothing! But yeah....that was the worst Chinese food ever. I had better Chinese to-go from a supermarket in Utah. Come to think of it, every Chinese restaurant I ever ate at in the greater PDX area was always dreadful until this last summer when my buddy took me to Wong's King. Holy shit, that was GREAT!!!

That's funny that the acropolis is getting mentioned so much. When I lived in Portland (for way too long in my opinion) I spent a few years working at the Bins, and out there at that time there wasn't anywhere to get food at other than a shitty gas station, the snack machine at the Bins, or the Acropolis. We ended up getting food at the Acropolis quite a bit. We'd get it to go cuz that place was kinda depressing during the daytime but I can back up their food claim. Good stuff. Although of all the towns I've ever lived in I think Portland just kinda nails it when it comes to food, you really can't go wrong with any restaurant there. Well, except maybe hung far low, nasty nasty shit and piss food. Dunno if that place even still exists though. The bar part of it ruled.

working at the bins...man. had to have found a bunch of good shit though, right?  bins are brutal. fucking people scratching and clawing and fighting for shit that you pay for by weight.  one time i was there and some records came out and this guy put the whole stack in his cart asap. i asked to look through them with him and he said "when i'm done" after it was sorted. prick.

I've heard all kinds of stories about "be careful of the syringes!" and stuff like that.  Also heard about someone finding a hamburger in the pocket of a pair of pants there.

Only went there a couple time and didn't have the best of luck, didn't feel like fighting with the regulars.

I like the old system of bringing new merchandise on the floor at the original Bins. You could always tell which table was gonna get the next bin of goods dumped into it. People would line up along the sides of the table as if someone was shooting a free throw, and you were lining up along the key hungry for a rebound. As the bin would begin to tilt and the merchandise started to pour out, you'd see people nearest the flow of goods kinda boxing out the other people. It was really competitive and surprisingly physical and just kinda surreal to watch, especially as the most competitive people were vintage clothing store buyers, indie kids, and the destitute people who needed cheap clothes the most.

Nowadays, the roping-off system's just not nearly as fun. The South Sacramento bins has the same old PDX bins system, but there's not a lotta drama when the bins start to tip. It's just not competitive at all.

What's up with those Mexican dudes at the PDX bins these days scanning all the ISDN #'s offa every book. You can't look through any books until they've scanned every one. Who are they working for???

Further down McLaughlin, if you're hungry for a burger, try Arthur's Bomber Cafe and get the deluxe Arthur's Bomber Burger. Best peanut butter-slathered burger I've had anywhere!!!

Even further down...all the way down to Oregon City, there's a rad collectibles store downtown just below the bottom of the municipal elevator which has an incredible selection of board games. Back in the 60s and 70s, companies knew that a great way to market a new TV show or Saturday morning cartoon was to make up a board game based on it. They seem to be very fairly priced. This place is also good for old beer and liquor merchandising pieces, such as cardboard table tents, bumper stickers, and bar glorifiers. Your one-stop bachelor pad decoration destination!

You've been away from Portland for too long if you're touting Mexi-Fries and T Bells!

If you came back, that'd become obsolete pretty quickly after visiting Potato Champion.

What's the status of our own TermBo friend Dickwolf's dream of a Poutine/Chorizo food cart?

Dunno if someone already mentioned it, but get a DUTCH TACO!
It sounds gross but its like ham with cheese folded in a waffle, plus a buncha other stuff. Dunno the streets but someone could point you in the right direction.
Oh, and dont throw quarters at the strippers at Magic Gardens...they get pissed.

Fuck.  I failed to have a dutch taco! But it's right down the street from Mississippi records.. so consider it a 2 for 1 deal!
Don't forget greennoise records (Ken Dirtnap's stores).. and they have free record store maps available in all the record stores. Pretty awesome!

I liked the cuban restaurant that Tracy Nelson recommended, http://www.pambiche.com/
And I enjoyed the Shanghai Tunnel when we went; http://www.yelp.com/biz/shanghai-tunnel-portland
Did the matador get swanky? http://www.thematadorbar.com/ I thought this used to be a dive?
You can bug Candy and Justyn at Fire on the Mountain (the wings were good) http://www.portlandwings.com/ (they work at the burnside location)
The grotto is interesting: http://www.thegrotto.org/.. I got in trouble with a friend for refusing to stop (loudly) swearing.

and second Zack's notion that Portland has awesome (and cheap) food.

And I'm a big fan of video poker. GAMBLE YOUR BRAINS OUT!

Oh, the bins moved? I worked at the old one you mentioned. Good description of that place, "physical" is certainly the keyword. I'd leave there with bruises everyday. People wanted that shit BAD.

Heh.

Attention book lovers!!!

Hardcover $2.00  Softcover, including very slim softcoverbooks $1.00

Be forewarned, prices for books went up!!!!!!

A bunch of goodwill thug employees
That find enjoyment at kicking patrons out or call the P O L I C E!
Don't believe them, I have been back many times. They could care less! Threats mean nothing!
I witnessed a guy protesting others were getting in the way of his looking at books, just minding his own business.  When he was accused of elbowing a fellow patron.  WRONG.  So he gets a little peeved and they say get away from the table sir!  He does and then they say leave the place!  Jeepers!

Greedy bastard bin runners, hope they die in the putrified slough of waist and defilement they ask too much for to begin with.  Who can find a decent paperback there worth the dollar they require you to pay nowadays!

I hate this place and love the people who go there.

Have been back many times just to treasure hunt, not buy a damn thing (or damnable thing).  Those scum employee yellers deserve nothing more than soup kitchens and rolling in the street gutters with the flee ridden rats!

I hate the Goodwill! Because Goodwill Industries is out to make more profit in our time of woe!!!

===
and better yet:
This place is a straight-up nightmare....completely 'Beyond Thunderdome'.

It's like a veritable emporium of scabies, hepatitis, and human misery, all marching along to a soundtrack of screeching children and frantic appliance-throwing. Step inside and gaze upon the wasteland of discarded home furnishings and cast-off clothing, suspended indefinitely in the purgatory that is 'the Bins.'

Couple this bacteria-rich atmosphere with the hyper-aggressive swarm of nutbags battling for the 'best' garbage, and you will suddenly come to the horrifying realization that you are now living in the post-apocalyptic future, where it's every man & mutant for himself.

I love Pambiche.  Not very veggie friendly unfortunately, but the things that I can eat are excellent.  Also really good drinks.

Also, if anyone goes to Salvador Molly's (in SE... maybe around 34th and Belmont?) look for me on the wall of flames!!!   I got on there by eating 5 habanero peppers or something like that.  Then I ran out of the restaurant and chased down an ice cream truck that had a driver who was nice enough to give me a popsicle for free to cool the burn.

Hottest thing to eat in Portland is on the menu at Cha Ba Thai (NE Sandy at 57th or so).....at the bottom of the Curries section, you'll see the one that doesn't have coconut milk in it. Beware!

Yeah, their curry is some of the best I've ever had. Thai Food Cafe is still probably my favorite Thai place in Portland, though.

Anyone got Ethiopian recommendations? I generally go to Enjoni but would like to try one of the other places one of these days.

I dig Jarra 'cos of how incredibly dim it is in there. It's almost original Hung Far Low lounge dim.

There's that spot that opened a little more than a year ago on N Williams. Smelled great walking by. Been meaning to go, but they were closed when we tried during our latest visit.

Queen of Sheba is the safe bet for introducing people new to Ethiopian food. I mainly like it for the big Danny Glover picture. Apparently, it's his favorite.
Title: Re: going to portland oregon
Post by: tina on December 24, 2009, 04:43:59 PM
Yeah, I was going to say Jarra's.  We used to go there pretty regularly.  All their food was 1/2 price after midnight in the lounge area.  Also they had lots of fun board games and no one was ever there so it seemed like you own private bar.

I remember seeing a few bands there.  Can't remember who specifically... I think maybe I saw Phantom Lights (Sarah from the Hunches' band).  Kinda funny thinking about it now, the concept of seeing punk bands at an Ethiopian restaurant.

I seem to remember the quality of the food was just okay, but this could have had something to do with the fact that I always went late at night so the food had probably been sitting around all day.  This place had nothing on the amazing BLUE NILE in Columbus,OH.

Post by: DJ Rick on December 29, 2009, 04:44:35 AM

Yeah, definitely the after-dinner-hours food at Jarra should not be used to judge Jarra. I've eaten there when some friends got a karaoke itch. It was okay on a level with "bar food". I've never been to your favorite place in Ohio, but compared to my favorite places here in California, Jarra during dinner hours is quite a competitor.
