Will there be in a few weeks and wondering if any locals have tips about record stores or good beer joints- thank you in advance, desert people.
-
Eastside Records, Tempe.
Then you should just stay in your room and surf Termbo.
-
My friend from Sedona says there's plenty of excellent crystal healing to be found there.
-
If you're into comics check out Samurai Comics in downtown PHX. When I was there they had a Magic The Gathering tourney going which was both sad and hilarious.
I would imagine any record stores and good bars would be in Tempe (college town).
-
Eastside Records is a must. It is in Tempe on the corner of Ash and University.
Revolver Records is in Phoenix. Lots of used stuff to sift thru.
Tracks N Wax is also in Phoenix proper. Hit up the singles and you might turn up something worth flipping for a few extra $$.
Me and AA scored a few gems out of Zia records before. Pretty hit or miss. 5 locations. Go bananas.
PM a date range of when you will be here if you want and I can let you know if any decent shows are happening while you are out here. Doubt there are but you never know.
-
new promotion is a record collecting lucky charm. dude is responsible for my single best record shopping adventure in phoenix ever! actually, he was there for my second best day, too. proof!
gonna be good seeing you soon, genz!
-
Tracks In Wax is dead. Their stock barely changes from month to month. Dude doesn't even bother playing vinyl in the store anymore.
You might wanna try Stinkweeds a few blocks away, though. That place was always a sorry excuse for a record store BUT they underprice the best shit 'cos neither staff nor clientele knows shit about music -- last time I was there I picked up a '70s Kim Fowley comp for $2 and a nice early press of The White Album for $8.
Revolver is by far the best shop in town -- they get new stock every day so it's worth going often.
There's good thrifting throughout the PHX area, too.
-
thanks, that helps a lot. Gonna be there March 19-21 to watch some spring baseball, and wouldn't mind missing the visor and Coors Light with cozies crowd at night, if possible. If you know of any shows, I'd love to hear about them. Is there anything interesting booze or records-wise in Tucson, cause we're going to be there Sunday.
-
Kudos to you for picking the one weekend around SXSW that AZ seems to be vacant of good live music. Probably for the best. A list of bars I find tolerable to throw back a few include...
TEMPE
Yucca Tap Room (corner of Mill and Southern)
Palo Verde (total dive bar. On Broadway just west of Hardy)
Taste Of Tops (lots of beer choices. no hard booze unless that changed recently. On University)
SCOTTSDALE
British Open (corner of McDowell and Scottsdale)
Rogue Bar (on Scottsdale just north of McKellips)
Hope all this helps. Enjoy the games!!!
-
TUCSON
Couple of good bars Downtown and a bit closer to the University...depends on
whether you want a dive or a brewery.
Good food everywhere...a few record stores (Toxic Ranch-PDQ-Zia) that
are either wildly overpriced or poorly stocked or both. Toxic is OK...youll
have better luck at Bookmans for an elusive score
Bookmans- 6230 E Speedway Blvd or 1930 E Grant Rd
Depending on what day yer here either me or mark beef can direct you
to whats happening and where the good eats are
-
thanks guys. This helps a lot. I'm not exactly sure how much time we're going to have because this is the first time we've been to spring training and we're actually going to the games, but we'll definitely check out some of these spots. Hoping to keep a nice buzz all day long until the heavy evening hitting. Any bars have really good beers, even if they're a bit more expensive?
-
Taste Of Tops would be your best bet in Phoenix/Tempe.
Yucca opened a side room that supposedly has a great selection of beers but I have not been on that side yet.
British Open is a "british" pub so you will find Smithwicks, Boddingtons, etc. Food is decent there too.
The rest are all standard fare as far as beers go.
-
bookmans is the shit, they have them in phoenix too i think but i've only ever been to the ones in tucson. if you are in tucson you need to go to eegees, it is one of the best places to eat ever. also, taco shop is cheap and good. man, i miss that place.
-
Tucson = nothing to see here...move along
if however you're buying I can get you into an exclusive bar that has donkey shows and a live chupacabra you can ride
-
If (in a purely hypotehtical situation) one was driving a 17 foot moving truck cross country and happened to be on i-10, would any of these stores be easy access from i-10 and potential parking for the u-haul?
-
tucson's record shopping's pretty dire--phoenix is definitely the place to go. i had some good luck at bookman's in the four years i was back--anti-cimex "raped ass" on clear ($1), iron curtain 12" ($5), jacks / vast majority 45s (.50)--but those instances were few and far between. the glory days of pdq are long over, though the last time i was in there they had an unrelated segments 45 for $80 or something...who the hell even knew to pick that out as a desirable record?
instead, i'd focus on tucson's strength: great mexican food. mi nidito or el minuto in the downtown/south part of town are highly recommended.
-
seriously, tony....mi nidito or el minuto as Tucson's best?
you are way misguided there

seriously, tony....mi nidito or el minuto as Tucson's best?
you are way misguided there
for mexican? yep, absolutely w/o a doubt.
-
who knew? I thought only the white suburban crowd believed the tucson weekly lies
-
tucson weekly likes 'em, huh? even a stopped clock is right twice a day, eh??
i'm working off the opinion of a 75 yr old mexican woman who rarely eats any food that she hasn't prepared herself--my mommy!
-
just ate at la indita and it was seriously impressive -- and actually at pico de gallo for the first time which was different, fantastic.
rosa's avocado enchiladas are good, salsa is great there.
anyway, tony's picks are the shit too but fuck, a man can only eat three giant mexican meals a day. long weekend.
-
always been a fan of la indita's sunday breakfast menu...their standard one's never done much for me.
-
all the stuff y'all are mentioning are decent but there's scads of places just as good that don't get the fanfare and dozens of places that blow doors on em with hardly a mention....never been a fan of crowds so when there is seriously 8-12 places as good as mi nidito within walking distance of it, and 2-4 that demolish it within same reach I won't be waiting in line cause the president ate there
-
the beauty of tucson is that there are tons of great mexican joints to eat at--i definitely don't know 'em all! el minuto was always my go-to place when friends were visiting from outta town. actually, tucson's got a lot of good eateries in general, now that i think of it.
i'd probably go out for mexican food once a month or something. more often than not, i'd just end up visiting my folks and gorging down there.
-

I agree, I love both of these places. Take it from a couple of guys who grew up eating Mexican food at home, every day of the fucking week. Mi Nidito's Sonoran style enchiladas are delicious. El Minuto's cuisine is my all-around favorite, esp. the caldo de queso. I've only been there twice in the past four or five years so things may have changed, but both those places are institutions. There is NOTHING in the northeast that even compares.
I still have a soft spot for the semi-corporate La Parrilla Suiza, which began as a taqueria in Mexico City decades ago (my mom useta eat there). It's not the most authentic by a long shot, but I love the tang of their enchilada sauce and their tortillas and bistek are delicious.
-
My Best Thus Far:
El Torero- 231 E 26th St-Best Turkey Mole
Anita St Market- 849 Anita Ave - Best Tortilla's
Bk's-2680 N 1st Ave - Best sonoran hotdogs
Tacos Pico De Gallo-2618 S 6th St- Best Horchata and Pico De Gallo (fresh fruit with lime and chile)
Los Portales- 2615 S 6th Ave- Best sit down semi nice place your parents would feel safe in...also see La Parilla Suisa
Mariscos Chihuahua- 1009 N Grande Ave- Best mexican seafood
St Marys Mexican Food- 1030 W Saint Marys Rd- Best Birria and 2nd best tortillas
El Rio Bakery- 901 N Grande Ave- Best bakery
Mary's Market- 1555 S 10th Ave- Best $4 mexican breakfast
Rigo's- 2527 S 4th Ave- Best mexican buffet
Rosa's- 1750 E Fort Lowell Rd- Best salsa
I'll post more later...
AVOID AVOID AVOID
El Charro- (overrated expensive and shitty)
Mi Nidito- (overrated and one hour wait outside for a table...three good places within a block of it)
Los Betos- (people keep getting food poisoning...theres 6 locations at least)
-
like I said both of those places are decent....but when you have 12 other places just as good, and in a couple instances better, within steps of said establishments the reasons to wait half an hour for a table to pay more money than you would have at one of the other places disappear very fast
take it from someone who actually looks like they eat mexican food every day
donn's list is way more spot on....with a few exceptions
Agua Chile at 4102 N. Flowing Wells Road has better seafood than Mariscos Chihuahua
and Ive never gotten sick at a Los Betos
and Tania's for soups
-
NIG-
Wanna meet me at Marys Lucky Dollar in an hour for eats?
-
soy ten lee
-
A'right, I wanna food tour with you fucks next time I'm in town. It's been years since I lived there so I always end up going to the same few spots.
El Charro is the worst! Last time we were in Tucson an old friend who oughta know better (pinche Lewis!) insisted that they have the most amazing machaca... place is bullshit! Worse than the old Mexican fucketeria at the UA student union. Strictly gringo-style. And the waitstaff are all cholos for some reason.
-
engrish please mark beef
-
sound it out....three stooges stylee
-
having been a vegetarian for eight years (up until recently) probably colors my preferences a lot--the cheese enchiladas / caldos at el minuto are excellent & the chiles rellenos at mi nidito are supoib. even when i was omnivorous, i was never too hot on many mexican meat dishes, outside of the occasional milanesa. i'm allergic to some seafood, so i've never been too hot on mariscos either.
agreed on the wait at mi nidito. it is ridiculous.

Thought you used the babelfish for korean
Seeya there at 1230-ish.

town out for the best of the regional goodies...

i totally ditched noah & co last time they were waiting out mi nidito. never went back!
the fluffy corn tortillas at pico de gallo were most impressive. place is funny too. yeah we hit indita for breakfast it was rad -- last time i went there was with AA prolly 7 or 8 years back!
-
I'm enjoying this thread more than expected...
In another purely hypthotecial situation, if one was moving to 85 miles north of San Diego and planned on making regular pilgrimages to Mariscos German for smoked marlin tacos, would anything in Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tuscon require a visit.
Again the above situation includes the minor detail that one woulde be driving a 17 foot U-Haul filled with records.
-
thanks, that helps a lot. Gonna be there March 19-21
If you make it back to the Phoenix area Sunday night, Wizzard Sleeve are playing at the Rogue in Scottsdale (location elsewhere on this thread) if that is your thing. Just found out about this. AZ promoters are kinda shitty like that.
-
well to be fair they only got added to a bill or had the show booked for them a couple weeks ago at most (like two)
won't begin to cast blame there

Always the voice of reason and compassion.
I guess I am just so used to missing out on shows because no one promotes them up really. They just tell their friends and figure that is enough.
-
agreed
and good joke
-
Taste of the Tops was king- we destroyed ourselves there and even met a Milwaukee dude and bonded over Gorman Thomas memories. Scored some decent records at Eastside and one Byrds record at one of the Zias. Thanks so much for the recommendations, as they made a big difference in our trip, which was a sloppy bit of spring fun. My head still pounds.
-
So, I'm headed out to Phoenix at the end of June. I'll be there for good. The first few days I'll spend with family in Queen Creek. There's a job that looks good for me but they try to place you at a location near where you live so I gotta find me a place soon after I get out there.
Any ideas of locations I should scout? Anything in the Phoenix area is good. Ideally I'd like a studio or 1 bedroom in the $500-600 range. Some say it's doable others say I'll be in a shitty area for that price. As long as there's not drive-by-shooting out the ass and the local gangstas only fuck with those who fuck with them I don't care. Found a place for dirt cheap in Tempe that I hope is still available when I get out there. Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated.
-
Tempe, behind Eastside records around the (AS)U. Safe, orchards in front yards etc. And Eastside, the only good thing about the whole place! You can get a HOUSE for 600. Well maybe 800.
-
you can find one or two bedroom houses, townhouses and apt in Tempe for that price. Between 500-800 for sure. The neighborhood behind eastside is pretty legit. Crime rate is high, but not in the drive-by shooting kind of way. Also, a lot of the houses are old as fuck and not up to spec, but just make sure you document the condition of everything before you move in.
in phoenix, you can find decent houses around the modified / roosevelt row area. As long as its not right on Roosevelt row, you can find blocks that arent gentrified and still fairly cheap. Not sure if there are many studio / one bedroom type houses though, as i've never personally looked around there. I know people who have / live there though and its not that bad.
for shows, check out the following calendars / websites:
http://www.blatantlocalism.net
http://www.distort-phx.co.nr
http://www.soundkontrol.co.nr
http://www.myspace.com/yobstempe
http://theslurpaz.blogspot.com
off the top of my head that's all you'll need. most good shows are flyered at eastside as well.

Cool, guys.
It sounds like Tempe is the best part of the Phoenix area to live in terms of having things to do. Downtown Phoenix appeared to be kind of like Detroit in that it shuts down when the office building close for the night and there's no sporting event. I drove up 7th and westbound on Van Buren from Sky Harbor last month and there was nothing going on. There was a lot of construction that might have something to do with that.
Does Phoenix proper offer any perks by living there or is it just like the rest of the area minus Tempe?

There are some pretty areas and good restaurants and, most importantly, a Bookmans. If you care about mid century stuff, central phoenix is packed with it. The whole metro area is devoid of bands and regular places to see shows -- except for what, the Yucca in Tempe? Trunk space/modified are in Phoenix though for kids shows and the occasional nobunny visit? Rogue sucks now, apparently. The 7th ave strip seems tolerable -- Phoenix is rough livin: Meth heads, crime, traffic. I dunno, I just feel like there's more sanity around the school in Tempe than anywhere else. More girls too. If you are gay, though, Phoenix it is (not a dis, just lotsa gay culture taking over in PHX, a good thing).
-
Tempe is my first choice but I'm leaving my options open. If I find a place in Phoenix I've been told to avoid the area directly east of downtown, the southwest of the city due west of Sky Harbor and a neighborhood called Meryvale (Merydale?). But I hope Tempe will be where I find a place.
Thanks again for the info.

in phoenix, the closer you are to a mountain the less dreary it is. and more expensive. this is my new theory.
*may not apply to south mountain.

Holy Mother of God!
Can I get one of these in Phoenix or is this a Tucson only delicacy?

Tucson.

tucson kinda smells funny though.

you can probably get Sonoran dogs in the PHX metro area, Tucson however also has Pat's chili dogs which are not available there so your need for a trip or two is inevitable
Sam hasn't been in the Phx area for anything in what...4 years? Not a reliable source when it comes to "the scene". Tempe has plenty of house parties, bars, show type shit, and as long as you're not a native Fauxnecian you will have plenty of opportunities to drive somewhere outside of your neighborhood and check something out.

does this mean if (when!) azpr starts up again you wont send me an evite?

man, pat's chili dogs is open again? i thought it was closed down! that place rules so hard

it was never closed that I know of...of course I've also heard people complaining about their fries not being super crisp and the cheese on the dogs being slices now....I really don't understand what these nimrods are talking about either since that has always been the case since I ever ate there back in the 80's
as for you, Samuel.... it definitely feels like longer than a year since you abandoned ship. I don't know what any of that other stuff means. I was just saying there is for sure more to Tempe than the Yucca, though that place is swell. distort can fill people in better on that end
AZPR? keep hoping and praying...that shit be deader than the Rio Nuevo project

any of you old tucson guys ever been to twist and shout on the east side? ever find anything good? i got a surfin bird single there for a dollar once, i only went there a couple times. what are the best records you've found at your local stores?
-
Bookman's is usually a good place to score something good...
Twist and Shout is worth checkin out...nice guys....
Zia's seemed to be buying collections...cuz I got good stuff there recently
-
I'm not sure what being old has to do with twist and shout records, place is alright but definitely more for the Beatles collector than some kbd/weirdpunk type...I highly doubt you'd ever find a Neos or Mike Rep record there. Not terrible for major label wants
Bookman's has been better the past couple years but it still hasn't matched PDQ's trove
pretty much anything you could want for $3 tops...not joking...some other people on here can testify and they came in late to the game there
and duh with my first comment...now I totally understand what old has to do with twist and shout
-
PDQ has an Okmonjks 7" for 50 bucks!
-
the real pdq scores came from working there (not really). i did find some good stuff, though.
the bookman's on campbell / grant was the only place where i regularly turned stuff up in the three years before i moved outta there again.
...then there was the time i found an injections 45 in some lady's apt. and bought it for $5.
-

she was enjoying an eegee's and vodka before 11am. anything could've happened.

hahaha i remember seeing this, i wonder if it's still there!
-
that was priced and put on display by a member of the band.
i'm 100% positive that the current owners (and mebbe some germans) believe that to be its true value.

by the time you came on the scene I know this is true....before your (or Fells members) days there was a plethora of now high dollar items there
Dicks/Minor Threat/Misfits singles
I don't think these are turning up at Bookman's
-
i was 17 when i moved to tucson in 1993--there's only so much i could do. i think the fells' guys are closer to donnie's age than yours, beefie.
i found anti-cimex and vast majority 45s at bookman's, between 2005-2009, for .50 each. do they count?
minor threat, negative approach, necros, dangerhouse and black flag rarities came from the 'q.
-

haha germans!
-
i know, i know, tony....really I'm not disparaging anyone
just saying before you or jeff or heath were ever going to PDQ there was a shitload of collectorscum crap in that bitch..... hell I got anti cimex 7"s out of there autographed with weird insert shit (metallic print promo photos) AFTER you guys had left town
me and donn aren't that far apart in age so I'm not really sure what that has to do with anything....I'm not sure if I look younger or older now
-
nah, i didn't take it that way. s'cool.
heath's nearly ten years older than i am and i know he'd been going to pdq since the store's earliest days. heath and jeff had some impressive stashes in a pre-internet world.
i thought donnie was closer to that age range (no offense, donn--you look good, man!), whereas you're only a few years older than me (34).
-
I think Jeff found tons of shit while working at Al Bum's, actually.
I found tons of shit at Bookman's between '93 and '95, often priced at a quarter or fifty cents (first-press Safe as Milk, Nick Drake LPs, etc.) I haven't had much luck the past few times I've visitied, though. I guess you gotta hit that place regularly to turn good shit up.
-

was that where he snaked the faust lps or someplace else? i love that story.

I don't really know Heath's history so can't talk about it but he didn't really seem to appear on my radar till the late 80's, but that could completely just be different circles. That's why I pegged him as younger than me. One bonus to being fat, no wrinkles
and yeah regularity is definitely your friend when perusing any used record/book store
or just having people that work there that know what you want
-
I think Jeff found tons of shit while working at Al Bum's, actually.
was that where he snaked the faust lps or someplace else? i love that story.
Yup. In my naivete (and poverty) the only ones I snagged were So Far and IV. No complaints, but Glave pounced on all the others. Tons of other shit too, the sort of stuff that undoubtedly came through Al Bum's and that no one else was after -- a first-press SF Sorrow, for instance; Krautrock records, early rock & roll. That kinda thing. I'm sure both he and Heath ordered a bunch of shit at Toxic for themselves. I remember going to his place in '93 and seeing Dead C records, and also walking into Toxic and finding Forced Exposure kinda stuff used for $4 or $5 -- Jeff's discards, no doubt. Man, that was a great era for finding cheap records. Between Toxic and Bookman's you could assemble a killer collection in a couple years for just a few hunnert bucks.
I think Heath is 44 or 45 years old now, making Jeff about 41. How the fuck old are you, Beef?!
AA, I was always astounded at the quality of the stuff you were able to get at PDQ -- all the best shit never even made it to the bins! You hooked me up with lotsa great records, and for that I'm eternally grateful. Best scores: Torch of the Mystics LP, $3; Can's Future Days and Soundtracks, no more than $8, I'm sure.
-
BTW, I'm sure you guys are already aware, but J. Willis has been digitizing a lotta tapes from that era and posting them on his new site, Demo Ape. Won't post the link here, but it's easy enough to find. His flyers site is a great record of the time, too.
-

and here I thought you were a respectable, mannered young man...you do not ask this of a lady!
let's just say that I was going to punk shows in Tucson before I ever saw Jeff or Heath...maybe they moved here from somewhere else for college or something...I don't know
-

my only regret from working at the store is not paying more attention to sleeveless 60s 45s--i really should've been more vigilant.
there was a lot of off-condition non-garage / private press stuff that ended up in the trash. whoops!
-

I doubt you'll find much at the price anymore. I didn't have the time for a thorough search of the vinyl stash in Mesa but I did find a DI record priced out at over $10. If you're a rabid collector you may not care but if you buy to listen it may be on the costly side.
I do plan on going back in the near future for a better examination of the selection and prices.
-
there's very few records for 25 or 50 cents anymore at Bookman's but the ones in Tucson rarely have records priced higher than $5
-
do you remember someone named gob? can't remember the name of the band, but had a split with al perry, maybe 86/87(?)
-
yep
I don't remember the split but the band was most likely What Went Wrong
he died in 1995...after surviving getting stuck to a plane's tail and having the plane take off and fly for awhile
stupid heroin

yeah that's it

Any good seedy porn joints in the area? I was hanging out with a chick yesterday that used to work in a seedy Portland, Oregon smut shop. We were curious what Phoenix had to offer. The only place we knew of was a Castle on Main St in Mesa. They just sold dildos and sex related clothing. We're looking for something creepy and dirty in line with the old school places ala Times Square. I'm sure Phoenix proper must have something.

Eastside Records was a cool little shop. Finally found the time to stop there. Really liked the guy working there. Hope business is good. Overheard him chatting with another customer and mentioning that he'd fare better in Portland or Seattle. Guess it's a bit tough in the PHX area. Had spots for Nobunny...thought that was cool. The guy told me Nobunny sells well here. Good to hear. Hope he does a gig here.
Ate at a Turkish joint called Cafe Istanbul a few times on Apache Blvd and Dorsey in Tempe. Good shit.

Sweet.
Does this house host gigs on a regular basis?
-
Does this house host gigs on a regular basis?
I think this was at The Manor which is now gone. There are a few houses willing to subject themselves to this debauchery - YOBS/ Trevor / The Tribe - so hope is not lost. Check out blatantlocalism.net (http://blatantlocalism.net) for a pretty comprehensive list of upcoming events of interest.
-
Eastside didn't seem to be doing too well when I last checked in. The shop is half the size it used to be. Almost nothing of note in the used bins, very few new singles. Good selection of new LPs though, and of course the people are nice, and the history.
Apparently DITG apologist user:james_fella works there, which explains the abundance of Gilgongo product everywhere. Picked up the Tradewinds 7" he put out, which was pretty deece.
Phoenix just seems like a tough town for good record stores.
-
well then how do you think Tucson feels...always found something at Eastside worthwhile
-
Tucson is hurtin' for a record store ...
A real one would go under fast unless it did shows....
-
Fer sure. What's Toxic like these days? Haven't been there in years. Seemed pretty desolate last I checked. What about your venue, Don and Mark? Would it make sense for you guys to sell records out of that space?
What's changed in Tucson, y'think? Obviously record stores are hurting everywhere, but it's crazy that there isn't a single decent vinyl shop in town anymore. Useta be Tucson could sustain seven or eight small record shops at a time: PDQ, Toxic, Wrex (holy shit, Wrex!), two Bookman's, Al Bum's, a couple Zias, Mad Hatter (which sucked, of course), Jeff's Classical Snobbe Shoppe, Zip's and Loco, that stupid Hear's Music place... Then there was that place that opened up by the Wooden Nickel and had no stock and closed after about a year; that bullshit Luna Loca record place that Wise Folk Whatsisface had going; the techno shop behind Chicago Store. Shit, even Nogales had a punk record shop for awhile (Roca Rola). What would it take for a decent record shop to survive in Tuxon these days?

Eastside is best for new stuff and any good used that comes in gets snatched immediately. Revolver is pretty neat too. Pretty sure James doesn't work at Eastside, he's just a regular. also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4BqBWlU5JU (love this band... not really last show).

our venue is dead and has been for a couple years...will find out soon if I still have charges because of it
I don't see how doing shows would benefit a record store unless you mean there'd be people there to buy stuff. Pretty sure Wrex was dead before Zia's moved in and that's really what changed for me...when Wrex died and Toxic took over there was a big change in the way of thinking in this town and everything else at least in regard to "punk" shit.
plus just the advent of technology and downloads and brick and mortars going bye bye

mr. inferno hooked me up w/ my (second) red squares for $10. more than billy sass ever done for me.
briefly considered opening up a record store in tucson circa 2005 or so. fortunately, we decided against it--ended up liquidating the 3,000+ potential stock items via ebay, the annual record show and eastside.
i still feel really lucky to have dodged that bullet.
-
A combination record store / dildo factory would go over pretty well, I think. Why hasn't anyone tried this already?
Dildos, hot dogs, Oh Sees singles. Maybe Chick Cashman wants to invest.
-
i think if a record store could incorporate henna lessons, a hookah bar and maybe a satellite "beyond bread" location, it would really prosper in tucson.
-
No one in Tucson needs henna lessons except maybe [ltd. ed. joke -- redacted]. You learn it intuitively as you cross the threshold from 1-10 into CDO. Mrs. Bull bought a sarong from one of the six headshops on 4th Ave once and didn't realize until we got home and unwrapped it that it was emblazoned with subliminal slogans like "Practice yoga, eat healthy, Al Perry Rules, do drugs at Club Congress, eat Maya Quetzal, Antigone books, saguaro, mandala #1"
-
Open up a store that sells nothing but Nobunny memorabilia.

KEY.
Easier to buy a 20 lb party cooler of strawberry EEGEES-
dump 151 in it-
and sell cups of that instead of records

what are "both" rooms? is one of them the dirt floor room? that is pricey
also I'm just gonna start booking shows there and go kick in the door/run off whatever else is going on.....hostile takeover indeed
you want anarchy I'll give you anarchy
-
i'm pretty sure anyone can book at dry river if they want to, it is a free space that is all about promoting diy ethics after all, so your "hostile takeover" won't be needed. yeah, the anarchy speil is lame but it's a small price to play for a space to do shows at that doesn't take door money or charge you for using it (living room, etc.). i'd kill for a space like that, st. louis is a bust now and the only place to book shows takes 50% of the door or more which makes it hard to pay a touring band, much less more than one.
-
sorry slash you're wrong
my dealings with those retards have ALWAYS been negative and never resulted in ANYONE can book a show....always some lame "well we'd need to have a round table discussion about them playing here" type stupidity
when it was el camino real it was true anarchy and waaaaaaaaaaaaay cooler
plus there's about three other places better for shows anyways
-
then why are you crying on a message board about it...?
-
who's crying? I was responding to something tango fistula said and then something you said...I didn't even bring it up
but thanks for worrying about my emotional state of being, that's how you hardcore kids are always looking out for each other making sure no backs get stabbed
-
They did the floor in the second room at Dry River and re-wired it...
so its a good lease to have.
As far as their booking?
The new Skrappy's is taking all their shows so DR will limp along
as a homeless outreach until they close or someone smart moves in...
-
I don't understand this continued taking over the lease deal...no one smart would do that because the dunderheads that run dry river wouldn't relinquish control of it enough to be beneficial.
It'd be like Double Zero all over again where the owner tries to find an idiot to pay all the bills but still wants to "manage" it. If you were able to "manage" it in the first place you wouldn't need someone to take over paying the bills for you.
They'll just find some other gullible person to believe in their mission statement and pay their way so they can play "fight the power" to their hearts content. And yes I have met at least two people who have done that already, before they realized what these kids are about and said fuck em.
-
I just like the space.
They've been bailed out twice recently so I'm waitin for the locks
-
james doesnt work at eastside. Eastside still has a ton of good used stuff, you just have to be a regular to get any of it because it goes really fast. Revolver is just about as good now that JR has a say in what they buy, but the other buyers are pretty good as well. They had a septic death LP on the wall for a while but it was $150 which i doubt anyone in arizona will pay. Its been on the wall for a while now.
The manor closed at the end of May when we all moved out, so it doesnt do shows anymore. Houses still in action are YOBS, The tribe, the cockpit and XNA. Theres also warehouse spaces (slurp, sound kontrol). The nile does some stuff but not really anything that cool unless its a Genz or Gerson show.
websites for phoenix / tempe shows are
blatantlocalism.net
cityslaang.com
theslurpaz.blogspot.com
mantoothgroup.com
probably more but cant think of em.
theres some good stuff coming up but more importantly a handful of new bands that are all really good. Nightgaun, Loves Pendulum, Gay Kiss, Avon Ladies, Destruction unit (yeah they're old but its a new sound and new members) have played a few shows each, and some others that haven't played yet (christian fiction, new band ex-naive, new band ex-pigeon religion, etc). Excited for the next few months.
-
Yeah, Revolver's really impressive. I always find good shit there, even though I only go about twice a year. Their dollar bins are pretty good too, esp. if you're visiting from the East Coast. I've found nice dollar copies of Emitt Rhodes s/t twice. Twice?!
Also, Stinkweeds is as lame as ever but it's worth a peek every now and again 'cos they misprice used shit all the time 'cos they don't know what they've got). Also, they sometimes order new shit seemingly at random and it languishes there for months, so if you're looking for an OOP record you can sometimes find it there gathering dust. Idjits.
-
the slurp blog hasn't been updated in forever....man that's some terrible shit at the nile...that place should've just stayed dead....I guess at least those "acts" aren't befouling other venues
-
I'm taking the light rail to Revolver tomorrow. Anything else worth checking out in the area by foot or rail? Good eats? Might as well stop for lunch somewhere too. Hope shit doesn't suck because it's Sunday.
-
I just picked up a turntable from Eastside Records and a set of speakers (that I hope will function) from Goodwill. Need a receiver. Any places to find them used in Tempe or the surrounding area? Eastside had one but wanted $150. Goodwill and Gracie's had nothin'. Will scope out a few more thrift locations tomorrow.
-
I always score at AZ swap meets
Try Bookman's and maybe even Zia's
-
search "marantz" on craigslist. my buddy steve just bought a great receiver for $50 and there were others to choose from.

Eastside Records closing soon http://terminal-boredom.com/forums/index.php?topic=29819.0
It's gone now. They had cooler shit than Zia. I'll have to make a trip to the Phoenix branch of Bookman's and a place called Stinkweeds that I hear is good. Revolver is a cool store but they don't have much of what I'm looking for. Got a receiver there, though. My old man is mailing speaker wire and I'll be back in business.

Anyone haunt the Bikini Lounge on Roosevelt/Grand? I've been hearing this may be the best dive in Phoenix. Went there yesterday around 445pm and the place was closed. They still in business?

yes.
the sign on the door saying open at 10am is a lie though.
go to a show at the trunk space then go over there to drink between bands.

Fantastic. I assume I was 15 minutes to an hour to early then. I will try again Sunday night after I, hopefully, see the new Miike flick at FilmBar. I shall also look into any shows at Trunk Space. Yours is the second recommendation in as many days.

To break the silence of Phoenix area happenings...
New collective shop opening up in Tempe in the same complex as Yucca Tap Room. Think an antique store with different vendors but instead of looking at old salt and pepper shakers, torn up back issues of Time magazine, and other should be garage sale fodder, it will be comprised of records (new and used), comics, books, stereo equipment, vintage clothing and other stuff. The vendors? Well, East Side Records, Stinkweeds, Ash Avenue Comics, Meat Market Garment Factory, King Of The Monsters & several others will all have spaces. The shop is called Double Nickels and opens up Saturday October 5th.
