Title: MGMT - CONGRATULATIONS
Post by: wnkrs on April 08, 2010, 08:32:18 AM
waddup this song is an essential summer jam (the last one, called congratulations)

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=124857167 (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=124857167)

it really captures tha innocence of being young and hittin a nug on the beach/fallin in love for tha 1st time (only 2 have ur heart broken 4 the first time, we have so much 2 learn, life is a journey)

but the rest of the album blows, this song is a masterpiece tho.  let down tha front.  PUNK IS BACK

While I don't think these guys are great, they do have something mildly interesting going on, at least within the sphere of music that they're operating in.  Some pretty catchy tunes, and they're always name-dropping Suicide and Royal Trux in interviews, and they just had Helios Creed open for them, which at least means they have good taste and are trying to turn on their fanbase ala Kurt Cobain (obv not to nearly the same magnitude).

Also had one of the dudes from Spacemen 3 work on their newer album.

In short, compared to other bigger "indie" / college rock acts... better than most.

I can only do what you speak with this record:

This reminds me of the French band AIR.  More rock oriented, but with a lot of the same moves.

this song is really good though, by being so punk & negative towards hipper pop music we're closing off pop gems from the dime & on.  pretty stupid.

"Ben and I took a month and a half to write songs in a tiny cabin in upstate New York, close to Woodstock," VanWyngarden explained.

Afterward, they took those songs to Malibu, where they joined forces with legendary British psych-rocker Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember and Jennifer Herrema, co-founder of the American indie group Royal Trux, to complete the sessions for their sophomore release, which VanWyngarden says will be called Congratulations.

i'm not whining but i think moving threads to the pop punk is a disadvantage for the board since music that some may like is automatically stigmatized to be bad & no serious discussion of it can happen.  whateva tho

arrrrg, there is no problem liking music that is not "punk" or not "cool".   Sometimes I feel like we're high school punks getting mad at our favorite bands for "selling out" or whatever.  Getting over that phase was the best thing that ever happened to me musically.  Sure, obscure punk shit rules, but that doesn't make liking an awesome song "dirty".  STUFF THAT SOUNDS GOOD IS GOOD.  I love The Nerves but I also love that one song by Girls and I think "Remix To Igniton" by R Kelly was the best song of the last decade.   TASTE IS TASTE.

Be sure to spell GG's last name correctly for that release.

Also TASTE IS TASTE is circular reasoning (and wrong) which never helps anything.

http://klyam.com/2010/03/21/cd-review-congratulations-2010/

Comments: MGMT rhymes with Polyphonic Spree. It?s true. ?It?s Working? makes me mistake the two psychedelic pop bands. MGMT made this record filled to the brim with pretty basic weird music. It?s pretty listenable, but repetitive and unnecessarily exploratory. Unlike some people, I don?t necessarily hate ?Flash Delirium.? It?s a bit too much to really handle, but at the same it?s relatively average. ?I Found A Whistle? is one of those tracks where I imagine a bunch of people holding whistles and each other?s hands in a large auditorium. The band successfully rips off the likes of the late Jay Reatard with ?Brian Eno? for nearly two minutes before a small jazz break and psychedelic mash-up sets in. So for a dude like me ?Brian Eno? represents the very best of this album and is right up there with all those Oracular  songs that people hold near and dear. ?Congratulation? is a neat softie rock song. It won?t get you dancing or really doing anything, but it?s chill. I?d be pretty shocked if anyone really falls in love with this album.

tl;dr version
: It's sort of bad except for "Brian Eno" --- sounds like Jay!!!

Since when does name dropping cool bands mean you're in one?

You ever hear a' this band SONIC YOUTH?

But seriously, in neither of my original posts did I mention anything about them being "COOL" maaaan.  All I'm saying is that compared to other bands of their stature I think they at least deserve a little bit more credit than your Vampire Weekends or your Yeasayers.  I mean for all I know Helios Creed now has a couple new fans that would never have found out about the dude otherwise.  Maybe Jennifer Herima and Sonic Boom got nice paychecks from working on this record.  What have Dr. Dog done for anyone lately, y'know?  And as far as their sonics are concerned, it's relatively innofensive and at times kinda catchy.  I don't give a flying rat fart if these dudes started out small, released their own 7", partied with John Dwyer and snorted Reatard's ashes... I like Justin Timberlake and Madonna fer chrissakes!

so I just listened to that whole record and I have to say it's pretty sucky compared to their last one, BUT
that song that you're gaga over, wnks, has to be the fucking WORST out of all of them (the only one that comes close is the instro but at least you're saved the inane ravings of a sweaterbrain in that one)

will never take a recommendation from you again

i recommend you don't lose weight

My debut Extended Play is coincidentally due out June 16 on In the Red. Larry and the guys wanted me to keep it hush hush so expect some formal announcement in the coming weeks as well as tentative dates for gigs in select US cities and Caribbean territories.

TheKLYAM is a very brave young man to be posting his reviews on here. Very brave indeed.

These fuckroids have a song called "Brian Eno" and "Song for Dan Treacy"?

They do that "digging up worms" song right?

This song is awful. If you like it you are either a child or from Chicago or both.

yo layawaybutch when you come through chicago late at night while everyone's in bed i'm gonna wake you up for a smoke we hit some nugz and i'm gonna put on this song and just wait and then we'll both burst into tears hugging and then we'll go to sleep cuddling.  CUDDLEMONSTER :)

Speaking of cuddling, you're the only other termbro I've met who takes pride in applying a tasteful amount of cologne for a night on the town. Maybe there should be a Men's Cologne thread?

I'm an Armani Black fan, as of late.

This song is better than most modern indie music but definitely not good.  Glad I at least now know what this band sounds like, as I was somewhat interested in them after hearing them gush about the TVPs in a radio interview the other day.  They're taking Dan Treacy on their UK tour apparently.
