WHITE BOSS LP:
"Perfect fuck-the-world headphones music. Crushing, epic, heavy hardcore that does not resort to overwrought dramatic histrionics. The first song reminded me of Communal Living era SEX VID with the added brutality of a way more raw/less produced INTEGRITY. The guitar sound is so fucking awesome; it's really deep/rich sounding, almost like Earth 2. The vocals are coughed out in a desperate, dismissive fashion. Fuck, I am finding it impossible to do this justice. I will say that I have been listening to this on repeat for hours. When a band manages to create a sound that is total and absolute, it is hard to tell the difference between that and all the rotten shit that clutters the world---usually intentional epic/crushing music just sounds trite, like bad poetry so full of empty signs. SON SKULL Birth Scene/Rewind:
"Holy shit. This record is fucking great. Heavy, relentless Northwest punk with incendiary vocals--her voice reminds me of the singer from the 80's Japanese band the NURSE. To repeat my aforementioned sentiment, holy shit. When listening to bands in the Northwest it's easy to file them away misguidedly under Fred n' Tooty or the WIPERS, but in this case the comparison is earned. It's what SON SKULL has done with that sound that tried and true eternal sound that makes the record great. This has a primal, desperate feel, but it isn't some flailing, aimless doom-- SON SKULL has a power to their sound and a totality of intent that makes them so compelling. I looked at the cover and initially thought I was in for some Oly anarcho-primitivist pie crust, but soon realized I was looking at Lauren Likely art--pretty much always a good thing--and am glad to be proven wrong. This long-running Olympia band comes from a scene that has continually produced interesting mutations on the punk or hardcore idea, from SISTERS, GUN OUTFIT, MILK MUSIC, through to HPP and SEX/VID. Birth Scene/Rewind is no exception. The song "Perennial Death" makes me want to ride bikes through the redwood in the dark; it's got this total cinematic feel, and as good as anything Fred and Tooty Cole did with the RATS. Essential."
