Title: Things to do in L.A.
Post by: frankie teardrop on July 23, 2010, 06:11:07 PM
My girlfriend and I are going to L.A. from this saturday to next saturday. The only definite thing we are doing is going to Amoeba and the Buena Park Record show. If anybody else has suggestions for other record stores and worthwhile thrift stores that would be great.

There are more thrift stores in LA than anywhere in the world. Seriously about every other block. West Hollywood seems full of consignment type shops like Out Of The Closet, where they have nicer, newish things for lower than store prices, but higher than Salvation Army, or Goodwill. Hollywood has tons of Goodwills. You can't miss 'em.

Get the handy record store guide at the first record store you go to.

Drive over Topanga Canyon, and get lost in the mountains north of there. Its the best.

I had a good time at LACMA and The Getty too.

Farmers Market was kinda fun, too, for a glutton. The Taco place in there was pretty good!

after the b.p.show (which you aught'a get to early) hit radiation and burger 'cause your only minutes away. you also might consider vinyl solution and tko if your down this way.  if you find me at the show i'll give ya directions & info. look for the pretty man in the safety goggles!

Out of the Closet is a thrift store, not a consignment shop. The reason it seems like their merchandise is nicer and newer is because most of their donors are gay educated people. Also unlike Salvos or Goodwill, for the most part donations stay at whatever shop they were dropped off at and don't get weeded through and shipped all over for redistribution. NCJW is also a thrift store.

Yeah, hit up Vinyl Solution in Huntington Beach. Also, I don't know where you're from, but go to the beach in Orange County. It's a lot nicer than LA.

hey friends. I'm such an idiot. I tried to go to all the Gories west coast shows, but ended up blowing much of my dough in NY. So I have 1 ticket to the Gories LA show at the echo. Special termbo discount: 15 bucks.

Wednesday 8 September 2010
The Echo
1822 West Sunset Boulevard
Los Angeles CA 90026
United States

If you happen to be in town that day, it would be a tragedy if you missed this....

oh yeah, I have 1 ticket to the San Diego show too. it's on the 7th I think.

I'm going to be in LA from Aug 9 - 13, celebrating my acquisition of an incredible time machine with food, beer and record shopping (duh).  Anyone know whether any decent punk (/garage/hardcore) shows happened? Weird paucity of info/ideas online, at least if you factor in any sort of quality control whatsoever.

I'm also going to be in LA from Sept 9 - 13, celebrating the big 4-0 with food, beer and record shopping (duh).  Anyone know of any decent punk (/garage/hardcore) shows happening? Weird paucity of info/ideas online, at least if you factor in any sort of quality control whatsoever.

Yeah, I shouldn't have bought them in the 1st place without knowing for sure that I was gonna be in the city. Don't worry. I'm learning. I thought the shows were gonna sell out fast. I don't like clogging up the boards with my ticket scalping anyways.

My wife and I are going to be celebrating our 2 year anniversary in the city we got engaged in (the reason this thread exists!) from 7/20-2/26. Anything interesting going on? We aren't really interested in any shows. I think I know the record spots to hit, but if there is a store heavy on used stock, let me know. Any hiking that can be recommended, breweries, wineries, flea markets, swimming, interesting museums, zoo's, or one time events?

I went to the Museum of Death today, cost $15 which was a bit exy but it was worth every cent. Tons of Rozz Williams art and photos I'd never seen before, heaps of serial killer art and letters, a quilt made by The Family! On Sunset Blvd, highly reccomened. Had lunch at a veg joint close by 'Truely Vegan' or someshit, not so highly recommended ..
Planning on heading to Wurstkuche for lunch tomorrow, looks sikk. Then maybe take a squiz around Grand Central Market, El Pueblo and then maybe MOCA or Getty.

I arrived in LA Sunday, and leave Thursday morn', I'm staying in Downtown Little Toykeo, I don't know a fucking soul here so if someone want to grab a bite I'll buy you a beer

If you make it down Long Beach way check out "Top Sekoms" on 4th street
topsekoms.com

On November 17th they're hosting "Bloody Sunday"--- free art show with free bloody mary's, artwork from local artists and live music!!

It is a clothing shop first, with original t-shirts, hats and jackets. But its also a safe-haven for local artists and musicians. The other half of the store "Dead Rockers" is filled with punk rock shirts, cds, studs and such... The walls are all tagged up so it looks like youre in a graffiti yard.  It is worth the trip to LB just to come party with these guys and gals!!!

If you cant make it to the art show theyre open daily from 12noon-8pm
1023 e. 4th street Long Beach CA

Try Atwter Village or Korea Town, they're likely the most affordable neighborhoods in town. Kind of seedy and many of the apartments are riddled with bed bugs, but they're pretty close to where the action is. You can find a clean place if you look around, check the bedbug registry before you move!

Boyle Heights is apparently the next happening spot.  It's a little dangerous but you can still find decent rent.  I'd second Atwater but I think that area is getting pretty hard to land something reasonably affordable, I'd try slightly more towards Glassell Park, although again it's not completely safe, there's still a decent amount of gang activity there.  Pasadena is nice and affordable if you're thinking the east side and it puts you right next to Eagle Rock/Highland Park and spitting distance from Echo Park and Silverlake.  If you need to be on the west side, there's some decent places in Mar Vista and Culver City that shouldn't be too outrageously expensive.

Pretty much everyone I know in LA lives in Eagle Rock or Highland Park.  I love that area, but I hear it might be expensive now? If I were to move back to LA I'd look there or Pasadena.
