Paid 10 bucks once to see this freak show and the over-weight penguin lookalike only played 2 effin' tunes!! TWO!! He's over-rated, 99% percent of his songs are garbage, and the only reason he is famous is because of Kurt Cobain and that stupid documentary on him.

POP PUNK FOR KENTUCKY JOSH - every topic.

I'll bite.
DJ certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea, but his cult fame way predates Kurt Cobain and, even more so, the documentary.
He was a darling in the indie world for a long, long time prior to Nirvana. WFMU championed him seemingly from the get go, he was buddy-buddy with Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo (who covered Speeding Motorcycle over twenty years ago), Jad Fair, etc.
I think he has some truly beautiful songs. But he is of course mentally ill, and because he produces so much stuff as a mechanism to deal with his illness, not everything is going to be brilliant all of the time or even most of the time.
I can certainly imagine him giving awaful performances, though.

I really should have just written this and saved myself the trouble.

Yup.
-
he has a cool story but yeah. most of his music does suck. the stuff that is good is magnified by all the shit that sucks so hard.
-
i saw him play for about an hour in a tiny venue in london a couple of years ago with a little group backing him up and it was one of the best things i've ever seen. i don't think big concert halls do him any favours
-
he punched bobby abshire in the nose at the old whole foods on guadalupe.
-
i like this guy. i like a lot of his stuff. a lot of the quality on the early cassette stuff obviously sucks, which kind of distracts from the songs when they are good. oh well. i don't think he's really overrated, someone made a documentary about him and kurt kobain couldn't be seen without his DJ shirt on for a while it's not like he is at the top of the what's hot in underground music charts or anything and he may play higher-capacity venues, but he isn't selling out arena shows or anything
-
get stuffed, all his cassettes from when he worked at mcd's were awesome
-
ten bucks for two songs at an oversized venue is horseshit.

don't get me wrong i like a lot of that stuff better than most f the more polished studio stuff i have heard. too much fuzz to listen to sometimes though. i know some people like that.n i do sometimes but not too much
-
I know he's all, like mentally ill and disturbed or whatever, but I mean gawd, you know? I paid $10, he should act normal long enough to deliver a professional performance for the gawkers paying to see the weirdo sing.

No fuck, eh? I think the guy wrote some of the most embarrassingly honest lyrics I've ever heard. He makes people cringe just by being himself, and that's something right there. He also has a way with melodies, at least on his best material. There's lots of filler (he doesn't seem to understand which of his own songs are good/bad, which is a fairly common thing all around) but I think his best stuff is worthy of whatever praise he's gotten. It's also a good story.

there is nothing punk about him. its the coolest thing he ever did, still doesnt qualify as punk.
-
He hit Steve Shelley in the head with a hammer one time.
-
was it with roky ericksons bloody hammer??? i suppose that would be sort of punk...
-
Nah. Not that cool. Not punk in any conceivable way.
-
I like DJ's art quite a bit. Definitely better than the music.
I do like collab. record with Jad Fair. I think it's called 'It's Spooky'. That's worth a listen. The rest is hit or miss with moments of greatness sprinkled in-between.
And the documentary is great. He went crazy for Mountain Dew.
I mean MTN DEW.
-
The record with Jad Fair is surprisingly good. It was originally titled Jad Fair & Daniel Johnston but they changed it to It's Spooky for the reissue.
Mostly DJ just isn't that fun to listen to.
-
punk is fake and so are you. grow up.
-
I wrote a paper on Daniel Johnston for a psychology class a couple years ago... I love Daniel Johnston but I guess I can understand why some people aren't into him."Story of an Artist" is such a beautiful song, definitely doesn't "suck."
-
His mom and dad are really nice people who are extremely protective of him giving away any of his art. His art pays the bills and they don't want the market saturated. If DJ had it his way it would be.
-
no way is daniel johnston better than the raincoats. at least not the first album.

i got the dvd as a xmas gift, never heard of him before. i did enjoy it and went and downloaded a bunch of his stuff, the early tape stuff is ok and sure there are some moments, but no more than a song or two really stuck with me and the vast majority of it i was not interested in.
throwing the keys out of an airborne plane wins him the crazy competition hands down but it does not make his music any more appealing to me. i do not like him or his music in general.
