Title: Moderation

I understand the need for it, but time for a changing of the guard, isn't it?

Not really. This shit has happened before over the years. Sometimes the internet is apparently serious business. There will be no more bannings (in jest or not) unless they come from me from now on. Other than that, SSR, myself and manchovies are all still mods, and will maintain the forums as best we can. I don't really know what else to say about it. If there's some sort of disapproval of or anti-mod sentiment, what can ya do. Shit happens. Some people take this shit too seriously it seems. If anyone has an issue, they can contact me directly. If people want to take their toys and go home, there's not much I can do about that either. Sorry. Whatever, life goes on, c'est la vie, etc. etc. etc......

This is what somebody said about the James Randi forum on another forum:
Quote
My impression was that they have a ton of moderators, and people get suspended/banned/whatever on a fairly regular basis. Then if you got punished, you can file an appeal and write endlessly about how unfair it was of the mods to pick on you like that.

They have a forum for "Questions about an aspect of Forum moderation such as why we have certain rules or why a certain action was taken."

They have a forum for "formal appeals against a Mod or Admin action".

There are 13 moderators in the "Appeals" forum, so be careful what you put in your appeal.

I believe we need the same system here. For appeals moderators, I nominate:
Sprague D.
Whet Bull
Sunshine
The Kylam
Any other member not mentioned that commented in the Young Steve "Now I might want to be a lawyer" thread.

This shit has happened before over the years.

Four important users disappearing in one day?  Really?

I've been moderating the KBD list for probably a decade at this point and bannings are not a joke.  You use them to get rid of serial spammers/trouble-makers, not to have some fun.  Looks to me like Scott fucked up and he should apologize.

bradX, AA, lawndart, and inotlistening have stepped off this mortal coil.

RIP.

I saw that. I just don't understand what all the hysteria is about. The City Rock thread? Really?

Dudes, come back. Soriano, take a horse-sized Chill Pill.

And I know for a fact that inotlistening still breathes. I'm about to return his text from earlier. and no it was not about Termbo.

I don't really get it either.  I guess if you want to say "CITY ROCK SUCKS" you gotta trudge through 185 pages, say three Hail Marys, two Our Fathers, memorize every word to "The Heart of Rock'N'Roll" and listen to the entire Los Huevos discography front to back.

Apologize for what? For people leaving on their own accord?

Here is the lowdown on banning/accts deleted by mods, deleted threads/post and other crap from "behind the scenes."

There has been about a hundred bans/accts deleted by mods in the history of this board. 50% of the bans/deletes are of fake accounts and 'bots. Pretty simple to explain and accept. The rest have been real people.

40% were thrown off because they were essentially spammers - people who came on the board only to sell their stuff, people who list their whole distro/tshirt catalog, etc. Unless they are obviously shills, these people get a warning: Contribute to other parts of the discussion or don't come here to sell your shit. They are the folks who prompted the Seller Disclaimer at the top of the New Shit for Sale thread.

That leaves us 10% and those can be ground down to three categories: Interventions, Shitty content, and Joke bans.

Interventions: A handful of people have been banned by me because I like them and they either had spiraled or were spiraling into Plastic Bag Baby territory. As much as I like a meltdown, there are also people I like who have gotten sucked into that internet vacuum and need a break lest they totally lose it. Everyone of these people have been sent an email saying "Dude, back away from the computer. Don't take this shit so seriously. Come back in a couple days." Only one of these people has ever complained, but he was off the rails, and later came back. If you want to know the names of these folks, I will leave it up to them.

Shitty content: Every once in a whole Richie and I will throw messages back & forth bemoaning a shitty user or two. Over a several weeks or months, we deliberate about whether or not to ban the person due to their inability to contribute anything other than potty jokes or retorts like "You suck". It is pure and simple quality control. It takes a long time to get tossed out of here. This has happened to maybe ten people in five years, none of whom you remember or miss.

Joke bans: These have been in existence for years and I am the only one who does them. They usually last no longer than a day. Lately they've been a running gag on the City Rock thread. You come on, say you dont want to waste your time reading the thread but you hate city rock or is this city rock or whatever and you get banned so you have time to read the thread. Mark Beef has gotten banned a few times as a gag (and a few times for quality control) and he takes it in stride. Actually everyone but AA took it in stride. And believe me, with AA it was just part of a gag. When he logged in he got a message that said "Take 24 hours off to read the City Rock thread."  Less than an hour after he was banned, it was lifted. And then he quit. He either didn't get the joke, or like the joke, or think that he should be subjected to the joke or made fun of. If it is that he didn't get the joke, hey, I'm sorry it went over your head. If he didn't like the joke, well, sorry about that, it amused me. If he (or anyone who quit in his wake) don't think he should be made fun of, what do you want me to say? And he got called a few names out the door. So what? But you don't have to worry about this, as the internet fascists have banned me from doing joke bans.

Oh and busted was banned for insulting Conan. I don't know what you call that ban other than me thinking insulting a guy who flew 3000 miles to play a show for a bunch of termbo freaks, and who turned out to be a very very nice & humble guy, was crummy. Note that when busted posted that SS10 was canceled, he didn't get banned. He got a curt message. We tossed insults back and forth privately, he sent me a picture of a penis pig, and all was fine. No ban. In fact, no one has ever been banned for insulting me, talking shit about me, arguing with me, etc. If I used the ban to keep people from giving me shit, I'm fair game.
----
Snore.........on to deleted posts/threads. I delete two kinds of posts (not of my own): ones containing pornography and those containing links to share files. There is no age restriction on this site, so the porn deletes are easy to figure out. It's a judgment call. People being able to access termbo for music information w/o having to age statement vs dirty pictures. Youthink it is the wrong call? There is an internet of porn you can surf. The share files is explained in the do not post share files post.

Threads can be deleted two ways: By the person who starts the thread and by the moderators. Plenty of people who start threads delete their threads. Perfect example is the infamous Jay Reatard meltdown thread, which he took out. Great meltdown, no record of it. (In order to prevent Plastic Bag Baby from deleting his meltdown in a thread that he started, we [I cant remember if it was Richie or I], locked him out of his account right after he quit. Meltdown preserved.) Officer Officer Officer Officer Officer Brad X habitually deleted his own threads when they turned against him. Recent example was his first Fuck California thread which he deleted when the content turned to Fuck Wisconsin. He couldn't take it so he deleted the thread.

I rarely delete threads. That is where Richie chooses to use his power. He does so when a thread goes totally off the rails and turns into a personal attack on somebody. If I think a thread is shitty, I pop-punk it. I pop-punk every thread started by Clint because it is a cheap joke.

(Right now outside I hear fireworks and "Detroit Rock City". KISS is playing at River Cats Stadium.)

Those are all the glamorous things I do as moderator. 99% of the time what I do is: move threads of records for sale from music board to sales board, move show announcements from music board to show board, move posts on cities to the cities board, write Richie about site outages & flaws, help Richie try to figure out ways to raise money and keep this free, sort through dozens of member applications and weed out the bots and spammers, etc.

Remember City Rock is serious business.

I don't think there's anti-mod sentiment, I think there was anti-arbitrary-and-capricious-bannings-by-SSR sentiment.  I get the joke angle, but if several valued posters leave in one day, something's not right, and I see that's been addressed.

No, people being babies about the internet....but seriously, when Kevin was banned way back when, everyone quit, same situation.

Bradx and harry "quit" every year or so so they dont count and Officer Brad is already back.

It boils down to Tony and RR walking off in a huff, and although I miss them dearly, they chose to leave instead of coming to me, and I could've taken care of it sans any drama. They're no more "important" than anyone else here. Maybe Scott's joke went too far, it happens. I dont think Scott needs to apologize to anyone. Scott will continue to moderate these boards. It's a thankless and mind-numbing task, and I think he's done a fine job for the past 5 years or whatever. We've talked about it the situation and it won't happen again. Things are as resolved as they're going to be, let's move on. Anyone who "quit" will obviously be welcomed back with open arms, as have the many quitters before them.

Shitty content: Every once in a whole Richie and I will throw messages back & forth bemoaning a shitty user or two. Over a several weeks or months, we deliberate about whether or not to ban the person due to their inability to contribute anything other than potty jokes or raves about really shitty bands like Nashville Pussy. It is pure and simple quality control. That is why Pat Vulture got banned. It is why we took out that Brit whose sole retort was "You are a fag." Layaway Butch got banned until he promised to up the quality of his posts. One user got banned for actually posting content of people eating shit - that was Officer Officer Officer Officer Brad X after he threw a tantrum about the Vint banning. For the record, that was the one and only time Officer Officer Officer Officer Brad got banned and it lasted for all of one week. He spent a little time complaining about me on the Wisconsin Rock & Roll board (does it even exist anymore?) and then came back. Last time he "quit" he started his own board, which lasted all of three weeks. Other than the shit ban, Officer Officer Officer Officer Brad has been tolerated, even as he ran people off with race/sex/queer/jew baiting.

Joke bans: These have been in existence for years and I am the only one who does them. They usually last no longer than a day. Lately they've been a running gag on the City Rock thread. I have absolutely fucking had it with this board. I have gotten called more names today than I ever have before, essentially for expressing my opinion just like anybody else. Whoever this person is that was talking shit about me on here was not joking around this time. I draw the fucking line at being called "mentally defective" because my feelings differ from someone else's and I had a valid point to make too. I openly just asked that guy if he's a Nazi, because saying things like that sounds like Nazi shit to me. Fuck this; I don't need this, yunno. I only ever hopped aboard this Terminal Boredom thing to find out about new records and concerts and shit. Not to be fucking abused, is that clear?!

Jokes on you, Strasser! Just for the record, Ernst had a warning for saying that 'the nazis suck', he could have been ok but he opted to commit suicide instead. Klausener had been getting on my 'goebbels' for some time so he got it, Roehm was just a dick and Von Heydebreck had countless warnings for pansying up the whole party with his cut 'n' paste rants against Steel Breeze. So yeah anyone wanta argue?

Seriously, Dawley split? That's a major loss.

He should be designing some sort of Termbo app for iPhone/Androids. Fire-spewing cocks and crudely drawn photoshop swastikas all over the place.

Come back, you sissies. K. swallowed his pride (and maybe some of Soriano's cum). Maybe STEVE will even dip back in.

Drugula's in NYC now, so anything's possible.

No Vincent, a few Small Faces, and I keep my hair short, shave, and wear Fred Perry shirts and Doc Martens.

I also probably have as many Sabbath, St Vitus, Pagan Altar, Trouble and Pentagram records as any on here, though, and I've never smoked pot in my life (and never will).

yo you guys ever get that feeling when you can call to mind whatever instrument you want to on weed. i didnt know what a snare drum was until i felt it was 360 degree experience. i was inside listening to thee oh sees and you know i need seed. i was able to come up with the most amazing music video to that song. it was as basic as one of those instructional vhs things they showed you in middle school biology. and the best part was my eyes were opened. next thing i know i was floating on top of myself, eyes opened and all in the fetal position. i couldn't believe this was happening, i had to look it up on yahoo answers, because i didnt think out of body experiences were included in the package. so after this I cued up half-baked, but I was only able to get through 15 minutes of it. I had watched up until halfway for three days straight. Right up to the part about the kind of smokers. I think this is what Officer Brad XXX porn was alluding to earlier. So anyway after this I came to the conclusion that in order to cap off this experience I had to play the guitar, but oh wait! I had to put away my smoking accessory so I ran down stairs but it was almost like I was flying. i was able to do what normally takes 15 seconds in a matter of 3 and best part of all is that I forgot what the hell I meant to do in the first place! anyway, i got back and picked up the guitar. i blared some good ole black lips on a karaoke machine and started playing. normally my playing gets lost in the mix, but this time it was exceptionally clear and effortless. i felt as if i was the shit. a couple of weeks later i decided to smoke again when it was sunny out. the time i just mentioned was cloudy and a bit nippy. so this time was nice. my mind processed many thoughts , one of them being, have you ever looked up at the sky ON Weed vs. off-weed. I never came to the realization that the earth was truly spherical. the leaves gently popped out from the trees. my final thought was wow imagine living in california. now, i never thought oh imagine living in wisconsin. that's for next time. im sure many of you who live in california know what i'm alluding to. i put on bob marley on vinyl and thought wow imagine feeling like this every day. and then i snapped back in to reality. i kept smiling for a day or two, because i remembered that experiences stay with you. people were coming up to me asking to me if i was high when i wasn't. this is the hallmark of an experience folks

you may think i'm drifting away from the subject at hand, but it is about excess in moderation

living in wisconsin is frickin beautiful this time of year.  i have never been to california but i did spend several years in florida and i would never, ever trade a summer here for a summer in that type of climate.  the winters are shitty, but it makes me appreciate the summer that much more!  there are plenty of people who live here who would love to move to california, and none of them belong living here, in my opinion.  i love wisconsin, especially the area i live in, and would rather stay here than any other place on earth.

living in wisconsin is frickin beautiful this time of year.  i have never been to california but i did spend several years in florida and i would never, ever trade a summer here for a summer in that type of climate.  the winters are shitty, but it makes me appreciate the summer that much more!  there are plenty of people who live here who would love to move to california, and none of them belong living here, in my opinion.  i love wisconsin, especially the area i live in, and would rather stay here than any other place on earth.

hey idiot. the climate in california is radically different than that of florida.
thats exactly how much i give a shit.  fuck it, it sucks.  might as well be florida as far as i am concerned.  personally, i wouldnt even visit if you paid me.

what am i supposed to do when the baseball arguments heat up??   i dpnt think ive banned but one person ever, and it WAS personal.  and it was for like 3 hours.  then i find out the dude was in some band i like and felt shame.

ive not abused my powers...but what richie says goes.    quit yer crying.  i was away last week, but i dont wanna fuel the fire (what happened?)

ive steered clear of the city rock thread cause i didnt want to be a banned mod.  i know good city rock when i see it, but my TERMBO confidence kept me quiet.  this isnt helping.  imma burn some faces!!!!

2009 was a brilliant year for insults, but I would date "doosh" to the late 80s, actually. Sort of a custom, hand-tooled insult in vintage leather, a little worn, very comfortable and familiar. And I don't have a cell phone baseball app, I actually don't even know how to turn the thing off. I learned how to do texts...last month...durrrr.

To those people who have never been to California, it's almost like saying you've never been to the West Coast of North America. Kind of a big deal, might want to get that higher up on the Before-I-Turn-40 list. Slot it ahead of visiting Branson, MO.

If I want to simulate a visit to Florida, I only have to go to Stockton, CA close my eyes and pretend there is a beach next to me as the sun frys my eyebrows off.

I personally like downtown Stockton - though for the most part, central California can be a bit of a shithole. I like to refer to many parts of a it as cowchwtiz. I am unable compare any part of California though to Florida ... never been to FL and never plan to. I would imagine Miami being similar to that of LA .... with that said I've never been to LA so I am totally working off of assumptions. I imagine beautifully tanned, fit, tall douchebags everywhere you go.

On the topic of moderation ..... I don't mind it. I am an incredibly impatient person, so less talk, more rock is always prefered.

I have been to Florida, and lots of it feels exactly like Central CA: flat as fuck, hot as fuck, and strip malls with the same chain stores you can find in any town in the USA racked up as far as the eye can see. Everyone sitting in brand new cars at gigantic intersections, idling, waiting for the light to change, blasting FM radio commercials at top volume. Lots and lots of chain link fencing on empty lots where Blockbusters/Borders/Kmarts used to be, where they will sit for 10 years until the next bubble gets them torn down or bored local kids burn them down. And the only jobs are in Big Box retail or health care or the military. Rent is cheap.

What Central CA has in its favor is that every town in the Valley has an old downtown core from the early 20th century, like maltduck referenced, a bunch of vintage, maintained storefronts that were not centrally planned by a slimy developer, but that just sprang up one after another. This is where any local alternative culture tries to hang on, like a weed blowing in the Valley winds...this is the part Officer Brad likes about WI, and he's right.

I actually quite like Chico.

Florida's actually pretty cool. Miami is obviously awesome. I never cared for LA much, but I don't think there is much similar between the two cities myself, although it seems like people from Miami tend to like LA quite a bit. Orlando is kind of an ugly city at times, but the trees and all the water make it kinda beautiful, especially when you're on acid, and you really can't complain much about sitting around in next to nothing while chillin' or partying with Rich and his crew, chowin' down on bisquits and gravy and starin' at legs.

Miami is NOT Florida, actually. I'm thinking more about the Panhandle or Tallahassee or Orlando or Lakeland, or some of the gross phony-boom towns in South Florida that have all gone bust, just like in CA. I was last in Miami around 1988, so I'm sure what I saw then has only gotten more off-the-hook. Some of the finest plastic surgeons in the world operate out of Miami...

Florida beaches are nothing to talk shit about of course, but I've never been much of a beach guy (shrug, I'll take a mountain-top retreat with some fir trees and a cold-running stream for my paradise instead) but I wouldn't kick a white sand beach and some chilled alcohol out of bed.

EDIT: My point is any shit I've just talked about Florida is also applicable to vast stretches of anywhere in the USA. We've built a lot of ugly shit over the last 10-15 years that makes everything near it look depressing as hell, including the people.

does Orlando look pretty?  No not really, hell a lot of Florida doesn't, but this place far from sucks.  we have full towns of weird carnies and psychics, off the wall theme parks, swamps, beaches,  springs, Weeki Wachee, giant rebel flags, alligator back scratchers, anything you can think made out of shells,  and strange tourist attractions.  Yeah maybe we aren't spearheading the next food trend,  and we missed out on the awesome "loft pop" scene, and its true we don't have many thrift stores with $50 t shirts, but this is a state that was settled by castaways and weirdos and it still shows. Plus we had an incredible early punk scene where because of the lack of options you had bands like the Eat playing used car lots.  Thats fucking rad.  Sometimes I think about moving just to experience something else, but I honestly think this state fucking rules.

Florida has St. Augustine. And that place is beautiful. Even if it is overrun with tourists.

I used to live in Jacksonville. Brutal. But I miss it sometime.
Family members lived in Kissimmee (FUCK Disney...home of 2000 MANIACS!!).
Gatorland and the home of Tupperware...I'm a fan.

This thread has become invaluable in helping me convince my girlfriend there's other things to do besides going to Universal Studios when we visit Florida next month!  Looking to take an air boat tour driven by a half drunk indian and feed salad to the manatees!

We're trying to catch the last Space Shuttle launch, so looking at the week of July 8th now, and have a base camp arranged in Orlando.  A PM regarding any shows/parties around then would be much appreciated.  Thanks!!!

I don't see what there is to miss about Jacksonville.  It's pretty boring and it smells too.  My dad's family is from there so I've been there so many times over the years.  Some of the historical stuff there is cool, the forts and the old slave plantation but overall Jacksonville has nothin goin for it.
