If you look at where those people are posting from it makes complete sense. Anyone yet read the book I've pimped on here several times: What The Dormouse Said? Palo Alto, CA and Denver, CO is where that shit came from. Back in the day there were punks on BBS's too. Cult of the Dead Cow was regularly talking about bands like Dayglo Abortions and lots of other stuff. I myself was on the internet for more than a few years before I'd met anyone who even had an idea of what it might be. 1200 baud, bitch!

Anyone else remember the internet before the web existed? It was all email, newsgroups and gopher.
-
I don't remember that, but I do remember going to the library and taking out giant Internet Yellow Pages books that had web site addresses listed instead of phone numbers. I also remember giving a presentation in high school about the internet and people looking at me as if I were from another planet ("Email? Newsgroups? What the fuck are those?")

I remember some really early newsgroups from when I was in college. When I moved back there a few years later, we'd do a punk radio show & then abuse people via some of the earlier email programs. It seemed as though it were mostly universities hooked up - we'd send shit out to our friends in graduate school and shit like that. Those were some funny emailz.

It was mostly universities hooked up. You used to be able to get email through some BBS's though. They'd hook up to the internet somehow and you'd get them when you'd log in to the BBS. Then they had stuff like Prodigy and Compuserve, and eventually AOL which were all basically mega-BBS's that you could access the internet through. It was only in like '93 that I can remember accessing the internet directly for the first time.
