The new Cheater Slicks LP: Yeah, you bet. "Endless Winter" is probably the most appropriate album title they've ever devised, and it's just in time for the most oppressive season this side of Smogtime Summer.
Hipshakes 45 on Goner: T. Trickknee and others say the rest of their recordings are as good as -- if not better than -- the first single on Slovenly. I love that single. The 1-2 punch of "In the Summer" and "Never No More" is a perfect Red Kross full-frontal spitwad delivered by a buncha UK teenaged goons who may not even know any better. I'm exicted.
Aluminum Knot Eye 45 on Big Black Hole: Totally underappreciated band, but I didn't really expect anyone other than existing converts to go hogwild for 'em. Polarizing in the best sense of the word.
More from the Wooden Shjips: The one band that surfaced in '06 who caught me totally off-guard and continues to keep me interested after 20+ spins in. The rest o' you "psych" bands can keep your cheap tricks (i.e., wah pedals), 'cuz I have a feeling these guys will bend light and sound to their will when they hit their groove.
Pink Reason LP on Siltbreeze: Have had the band's demo disc since departing Milwaukee a couple years ago; I still dig it out every few months to play at an unsuspecting listener. The self-released single, which culled tunes from the aforementioned recordings, is also no slouch. Great pop-centered drone with a strangely welcomed romantic edge. If "Down on Me" doesn't rear its purty head here, color me disappointed.
OK, now the girlfriend is here and making fun of me for being on the Internet.
-
Todd called dibs on Down On Me before I was offered an album.
-
Ditto more Hipshakes!! The other recordings are indeed killer, and Shaun was really excited about the LP he recorded with 'em...
Plus Mary Weiss LP, Crescendoes, that Yurayura Teikoku 10"...stuff like that.
-
Eric, I have a feeling that your girlfriend is actually Sprague Dawley.
-
Before the end of the year Kevin (Savage Recordings) and I are doing a 3 song Pink Reason ep including "Down on Me," "Devil Always Wins" and a song you probably haven't heard which to me supplanted "Down on Me" as the catchiest PR tune. I'm also doing a 3 song Catholic Boys ep & (hopefully) the LSOK LP before the end of the year. I haven't heard the recording, but the AKE songs to be used on that 7" are great. Someone still needs to make "Walking on Moonshine" into a 7".
-
Eric, I have a feeling that your girlfriend is actually Sprague Dawley.
this is right up there with the funniest of Sprague's material.
A+ for the laughs, sir.
-
My girlfriend is actually "phentermine pharmacy." It's not as fun as it sounds.

I'm married to my music. It's nowhere near as romantic as it sounds. I had two near misses on tour though. One of them was with an old friend. I really have no good excuse why that fell through, plenty of poor excuses though like: she was on the rag, and we were in a small apartment filled with people. Then in Richmond, there was a very sexy girl who was dancing to my music, and she traded me some beer for a record and shirt, and we were talking about the movie Necromantic and Gummo and lots of other disgusting shit that had everyone around us going "ewwww, gross" and then some annoying old guy walked up to me and started talking, and everyone basically ran away when they saw him, and I never saw her again and he was still talking to me about recycling doghair into microchips five hours later.
I'm thinking about becoming a monk.
-
I want to hear the new King Khan & BBQ Show LP, already! Do any of you fuckers have it yet? I haven't seen it on Soulseek.
I'm also anxiously awaiting the new Pissed Jeans LP on Sub-Pop, the new Demon's Claws, and the Black Lips singles/outtakes comp. A Wooden Shjips LP by the end of '06 would be pretty ruling, as well.

What band are you in? You always talk about being on tour and shit, so yeah, who?
-
We kicked him out of the Idiot Strings.
-
We kicked him out of the Idiot Strings.
Yeah, he was always breaking bass striings and giving us AIDS!
-
Jay Reatard full length on In The Red
Spider single on HoZac (and more Spider recordings)
Glenn Mercer full length (just saw his new band at Maxwell's...one of the best show I've seen this year)
-
The new Cheater Slicks and the new King Khan & BBQ are the only two albums on my can't-wait list right now. I've heard the new KK&BBQ and its just as good as the first, but in a different way. There's no timeless dance classics like "Waddlin' Around" but it does have a few real tear-jerkers for the ages.
-
When is that Mary Weiss LP supposed to come out? Any word yet?
I can'tfuckingwait to hear that.
-
I totally forgot about that KK&BBQ album. Throw that one on the pile, too. I've been chompin' at the bit for that one for a long while now.
-
I'm eagerly awaiting the new Volt LP on ITR and 7" on Hozac. Seeing them live reminded me of how much I love this band.
-
the new Lamps LP is all i can think of that i'm dying to have already. too bad it's not slated till '07. the two new songs on the myspace are wonderful.
-
Looking forward to the Baseball Furies last LP (great from what I've heard so far). New Mistreaters full length. And I'm really looking forward to The Fingers compilation LP/CD thing, even though I have all the records anyway. I just want to see it happen. And the Beat Beat Beat LP, although I'm scared none of it will be as good the 7".
-
Carbonas LP on Goner, also still awaiting my copy from Mitch................... ........................ ..................
Also new Hipshakes shit and new Time Flys LP.
Other than that, I could really give a flying fuck, I only buy used LPs nowadays anyway.
Do want to hear Wooden Shjips and Pink Reason though.
-
New Final Solutions and Carbonas LPs on Goner, new Shoot It Up and Out With a Bang stuff , and any of the new Noncommercial stuff coming out (inmates, wolfdowners, upstab). KK&BBQ, jay reatard solo.
-
New KK&BBQ, Jay Reatard, new Jack Oblivian (& Tennessee Tearjerkers) on SFRI, Mary Weiss, new Demon's Claws, Angry Angles, Black Lips, Tokyo Electron...
-
New KK&BBQ, Jay Reatard, new Jack Oblivian (& Tennessee Tearjerkers) on SFRI, Mary Weiss, new Demon's Claws, Angry Angles, Black Lips, Tokyo Electron...
Me too! And maybe also the Murder By Guitar LP on Alien Snath + The Black & Whites single on Shattered.
-
Um, I'm so out of the loop that I have no grasp on what is coming out/what the bands to watch out for are anymore. Of what you guys mentioned, the one thing I'm really looking forward to is the new KK/BBQ and the new Black Lips. Other than that, uh...maybe some more Home Blitz singles and a Busy Signals LP or somethin? The release I'm most eager to hear is that out of left field single or LP that knocks me for a loop the way not much else does these days.
The trend I most want to happen in '07 is for a return to bands that write straight up good songs that aren't influenced by a bunch of 80's Forced Exposure bands that don't say anything to me, hardcore, and down-home country-fried bands that take a cue from Gibson Bros, Bassholes, and other bands of that ilk. Oh, and please, let's see to it to rid the world of myspace powerpop bands too. All of the above mentioned stuff leaves me cold.
Cue Tricknee to make fun of me in 1, 2, 3...
-
Who has been ripping off the Forced Exposure scene? I wanna know so I can check the stuff out. I must be totally clueless.
-
I think he's talking about shit like the Pissed Jeans. Or piss like the Shit Jeans.
-
more Volt and Busy Signals crap would be cool.
-
re: Pissed Jeans
That's one band, and I don't think that really counts anyway. It sounds like he's saying there is alot of bands like that around. What is the Forced Exposure sound anyway? Bands like Tall Dwarfs and The Clean were championed in there and umm.... they're about as catchy and poptastic as you can get.
-
Rich.......is that Fingers thing a definite go...???
-
Forgive me Kevin, but I wrote that upon waking up this morning. I was using "Forced Exposure" as a blanket term for "80's Underground Music that Was Not Punk and Was Not Powerpop, ie the Emerging Indie Rock Scene in its Incipient Stages." I'm not saying that this stuff is bad music or total crap, but it's just not something that usually elicits much of a response from me when I do hear it. Maybe I'm being close minded, but I don't want to actually pay money to hear the Wooden Shjps (or however their name is spelled) when I've never been very excited by any Spacemen 3 recordings that I've heard. Ditto Pissed Jeans vis a vis the Am Rep scene. Also, for some reason on one of the singles I noticed the Pussy Galore influence going on with Black Time (I know, I know) and it sorta did something to the way I hear them. I still like most of the first LP (mainly for "Shadows" which, if you know what band they're ripping off there, please tell me cause I'd like to hear more) but can't really get into subsequent releases despite trying to give them a chance.
However, there are mid to late 80's records I like. I think "Sister" by Sonic Youth is awesome.
I've only heard the Clean once at a party, and I really liked what I heard. The only thing that's kept me from hearing more is that "the Clean Anthology" is a CD, which I pretty much never buy anymore, and I don't like downloading. I wish that early stuff on "Anthology" was readily available on LP.
-
Catholic Boys new single, more stuff on Boom Boom and more stuff that just appears out of nowhere like Tyvek, Home Blitz and Boys Club did (or new to me anyway).
-
That makes sense, Steve. I totally forgot about Wooden Shjips, cause I've only heard them on the radio so far. I haven't got the records in the mail yet.
-
Besides Lamps, KK & BBQ, Black Lips and other usual suspects, I am really looking forward to hearing the upcoming Goodnight Loving LP(s?) !!!
-
I'm looking forward to the Unholy Grave LPs, split LPs, split 7"s, 7"EPs, 2x7"s and various compilation appearances that are coming out next week...and the week after...and so on...and so on...
-
Rich.......is that Fingers thing a definite go...???
I dunno. I thought I heard it was?
-
I'm eager to hear all that new SIC ALPS shit that's coming out (debut LP and cassingle). Just discovered this band, and then realized I saw them a couple months ago (wasn't memorable?). Anyways, the recordings are great! I'm jumping on this wagon late, I suspect.
-
I'm jumping on this wagon late, I suspect.
nah, the cassette just came out on gary's animal disguise.
www.animaldisguise.com
-
I thought Sic Alps were really good at The Church. Best Les Rallizes Denudes rip-off band ever. Too bad I was too broke to scoop their rec.
Forced Exposure-influenced: Pink Reason!
I think that Home Blitz signed a hotly-contested deal with Parts Unknown. But maybe that's a rumor/secret?
Steve, if you don't like Spacemen 3 then why torture yourself with thoughts of Wooden Shjips? 99 percent probability you wouldn't like it, so fuck it. You're not missing out on anything except for A REALLY SWEET BAND.
-
Best Les Rallizes Denudes rip-off band ever.
yea the animal disguise tape has some cheer riffage as well as some sweet white noise a la early sonic youth
-
Dude, can I come over and burn/tape some shit off you?
-
re: Parts Unknown
Was that those dudes who were at the show in Brooklyn that were standing apart from everyone else? Did they leave for that Flipper show before anyone played, or did they just stand outside for the whole show?
-
erik - can i come over and burn / tape some shit off you? err, maybe i'll have to wait til november. i'll be there Nov 10 -12.
-
Yeah, I guess it was those dudes. They left to see their "flagship" band, Pissed Jeans. After they gave Daniel some heroin, that is.
-
Can't really blame them for not wanting to come into that place. Nobody believes me when I tell them that there was a group of dykes dry humping on the floor when I played.
-
J. you bring the fire and I'll bring the wood.
Are you gonna be looking through microscopes the whole time or are you making a pleasure trip, like that one to Bangcock last year?
-
Yeah, one of 'em was pretty hot, too.
-
Are you gonna be looking through microscopes the whole time or are you making a pleasure trip, like that one to Bangcock last year?
Laura's friend is having a wedding shower. So I don't think I can say it's a pleasure trip, but then again it won't involve any important science.
-
Scope me out some hot bridesmaids.
-
Dude, can I come over and burn/tape some shit off you?
sure whenever. shits all over the place. i need bookshelves.
-
Uh, where do you live? (like, what city)
-
chicago
-
I'm going going gone on the red-eyed express.......do you eat mushrooms?
Shit, maybe I'll send Lastname as my representative. Hey Eric, you down (but not out)?
-
Hey Erik,
I eat mushrooms.
-
i could make tapes of some shit for ya and send it to you too
that would be easiest since i work and have night class and then am gone a lot on the weekends. i study in the deep hours of night and it would be really fucking easy to hit the record button on my tape deck while the record spins. do you instant messaging and shit?
-
Erik this just in: we can drink in the Hospital store.
