Where to start? I saw 'em live ten years ago and thought they were kinda boring. Heard great things since. What should *I* start out with? Their most drugged and depressed would probably be best for me.
-
the skidmarks collection is a decent place to start.
'refried dreams' is especially good.
'yer last record' is especially 'drugged out' and good. this might be the one for you...
i'm missing a lot of their stuff in between. they were fuckin' great when they played here. im wearing my cs tshirt right now, actually.

Yeah, 'Refried Dreams' would probably be a good place to start for you, Kevbo.
A lot of people don't like the Cheater Slicks live. I've seen them many times and most people just get annoyed or bored, maybe. It's all about being sucked into the vortex. Just give in. But they're like Country Teasers or US Maple, where they hit these amazing peaks during their set. If you stick with it, it's like a narrative to whatever twisted emotion is sitting most strong inside you.

"Refried Dreams," for sure.

For druggy and depressed I like "Yer Last Record" over Refried Dreams, but every album (aside from Whiskey) has a fair share of depression on it. For my money, "Forgive Thee" is the ultimate. It has some songs that have satified me more than any other music in the world. It's only available on CD.

Yeah, I almost suggested he get "Yer Last Record" first, too. Perfect for the day after the bender, be it alcohol or drugs. Really kinda obtuse and sparse sounding at points. But I think the title track on "Refried Dreams" is probably one of their highest points. If you're in major self-destructo mode (y'know, in the middle of the bender instead of just out of it), you might also have a soft spot for "Don't Like You." "Feel Free" rules. But the stereo has to be cranked. "Forgive Me" is probably my least favorite 'Slicks record (or double-disc, whatever). Still like it a lot, though.

Man, who doesn't like these guys live? I thought their day set at SXSW this year was one of the highlights of the whole thing.
-
I dunno, this was in like '96 or something. I wanted hardcore. Not that I didn't settle for a whole lot of non-hardcore back then, but, I remember being completely underwhelmed by them in particular. The name really bugged me too. I thought it sounded rockabilly.
-
I really like the Cheater Slicks, but I think "Yer Last Record" is my favorite. It's got some of their best songs and the dark ones get really low-down. When they played "Momentary Muse" live I was so stoked.
I LIKE THAT GRUNGEY SHIT.

I'm gonna disagree on starting with Refried Dreams, especially for Kevin. I would start with Yer Last Record because it is without contest their darkest and most fucked up and it just flows really cohesively. Then move on to Don't Like You because it's one of the angriest, noisiest bile-spewing pieces of hate that's ever come out of the whole 90s Crypt/ITR area. I did the reverse and every one of them I've gotten since has kind of disappointed me because I hold Don't Like You as such a benchmark. That's not to say that I don't like the others because they're all great (especially Whiskey) but Don't Like You (with the exception of that boring acoutic Jon Spencer-led drawl) kicked my head off when I first heard it.

I started with Destination Lonely. Listened to it as I was going to sleep. I was pretty drunk but I thought "sounds like the Joyless Ones" which is really the reason I was checking them out in the first place. I told Casey that I saw Cheater Slicks and thought they sucked once and he seemed pretty taken aback. I care about his feelings, so I figured I'd give them another shot seeing as it's been a decade since I heard them.

Best things on that record are Dana's song "Murder" and the cover of "This Life Of Mine".
-
I think Destination Lonely is their weakest album. I'm also not too fond of Don't Like You, with the exception of Feel Free and Mystery Ship - two of the best songs ever. Everything else is amazing. Skidmarks feels the darkest to me, especially the songs with Alpo on bass. His presence makes their songs even heavier and gloomier.
-
Refried Dreams is their most "accessible" and maybe my favorite, but it sounds like Yer Last Recoed is what you need. helpful hint. if you can, buy the vinyl version of that album. it has "sad for you" which isnt on the cd and is them at their depressing best.
-
The production on 'Destination: Lonely' is absolutely neutering, but "Murder" rules.
I keep running into Bruno, formerly of The Broke Revue, and whenever I do, "Bruno's Night Out" pops into my head and won't leave for hours.
"Walk Up The Street" cover is a killer too.
-
"Murder" is a live favorite, as sung by Dana Hatch, whose drumming style was once aptly described to me as "he looks like a fuckin' robot when he plays" (by one of the Indiana crew). And he does! And it rules!

Yeah, he doesn't even use a high hat. Weirdness.

Don't forget some of the singles either. "I'm Grounded/Who Can It Be?" on ITR, "Walk Up the Street/Wedding Song" on ITR, and "Trouble Man/Hook or Crook" on Crypt all rule. "I'm Grounded" and "Who Can It Bed?" are on the "Whiskey" LP but I think the versions on the 7" are tons better. Or I'm hearing things.
-
You forgot "Chaos" b/w "Destination Lonely" on Gift of Life.
-
"Forgive Me" is probably my least favorite 'Slicks record (or double-disc, whatever). Still like it a lot, though.
The second song "Used Illusions" has made me feel better about life than any other song I know.
-
Sorry, it's the third song. I listened to that last night, and their version of "Child Of The Moon" and I almost cried.
