Title: aussie/nz/flying nun....
Post by: mike on September 07, 2006, 07:57:15 PM
i realize there's been umpteen topics about this very thing, but i don't have the patience to try to find them.
does anybody have some reccomendations of albums that fit the above 'genre'?  i have the clean, which i love, but that's about it.  anything else that could be rather easily obtained at amoeba or mailorder?
what about tall dwarfs suggestions?  they have a million albums and i never know where to start.
thanks

Not the same as the aforementioned two bands, but The Gordons s/t CD is one of the best things you'll ever hear. Reissued in 2002 so it should still be in print.

Gordons render everything obsolete. At leat in the west. Tall Dwarfs are the best thing ever too. Also, Peter Jeffries (if you feel it) and Dead C (sometimes).  There is more of course, but those are my recomendations.

Either "Weeville" or the "Three EPs" disc, I sez.

Mike, they do have a lot of this stuff for cheap at Amoeba in Berkeley fairly consistently.

Id go with the pin group, or the gordons. If you want to branch out a little solo Roy Montgomery.

Let me know about the Tall Dwarfs stuff...guys who work at The Meebers tend to listen to them in back and they sit next to the stereo...not on the floor. I want them too. Weeville is what I've been told as well.

Did you ever get any Groundhogs stuff? (Off topic - I know). The first song on Thank Christ for the Bomb (I think) is a JAM!
The rest is kinda' folk-ie...

yeah, i picked up that weeville cd and it's really good.  not 'the clean' good, but good none the less...
still haven't grabbed the groundhogs.  might have to pick it up today... i have a big stack of shit i'm selling there today.
the one cd i'm searching for is the chills 'kaliedoscope world'.  if you see one, put it aside for me!

The Tall Dwarfs are kind of a singles band, like, they've got certain songs that are better than just about anything, whereas The Clean are just across the board excellent, but don't really have any songs that stand out as much as the Tall Dwarfs best stuff.

For a start:

The Tuatara LP comp. CD Presents (!) put this out in 1986 or so, it's a USA-press overview of the early NZ scene. They go on ebay for $7 or so alla time. Or $25 if some trust fundies start tussling (or a NYC store is listing it). It has the hits and some great arty obscuros.

For the later 80s take, get the "I Wasn't Made for These Times" comp Lp, that will run you $10-15, and it has all of the second wave Flying Nun bands before the label starting sucking it around 1991 or so.

And for the random left field NZ experience, track down the Builders/Bilders/Bill Direen stuff, mostly on CD as the vinyl is very $$, prob on Soulseek I'm sure. His stuff is sort of the bridge between the Clean and Dead C, or say the popsmithery and the fuzzed-out drug 'veins'. He's all over the map style-wise.

You can pick up any Tall Dwarfs stuff pre-1988 and get the picture. Chris Knox solo starts to stray into Robyn Hitchcock preciousness in the 90s, but the 'Seizure' lp is still mighty gear.

Is anything good by the Clean easy to find on LP for relatively cheap?

You can prob find the 2nd comeback lp 'Modern Rock' from 1995 for $8 or so if you are lucky. It has 4 good songs on it, don't forget to check for the bonus 7". Their other lps range from pricey, like $40+ for Boodle or Great Sounds Great, to cheapish $15 or so for Vehicle or the live euro 12". Their orig CDs actually go for more than that sometimes.

The time is ripe for a major NZ/Flying Nun revival. Alot of the obscure stuff from 81-84 has never been reissued anywhere and alot of it is flat-out great. And you know there has to be tons of unreleased junque from back then, cassettes were everywhere in that scene.

You could always download it first. I'm sure you'd be willing to pay money for their stuff once you heard them Steve. I think you'd actually possibly dig some Tall Dwarfs stuff too.

Mike: 3 EP's is good. Hello Cruel World is good. Fork Songs is ok too. I honestly am just a fan of the band in general. I even think their most recent album was worth a listen.

Luckily, I have tons of this stuff on vinyl. I used to mailorder right from Flying Nun after reading "The Garage" and whatever Forced Exposure/Popwatch were into (B-Side from Australia also touched on much of this). I also have a few on cassette, for some odd reason, like the underrated Look Blue Go Purple 2 eps tape. I've made so many suggestions already on different threads, but for Tall Dwarfs definitely try the 3 eps release, which included (duh) three early eps.
