Title: Rap recs
Post by: i350125 on July 29, 2011, 02:11:04 PM
So I only own one rap album on vinyl, 36 chambers, and I don't really know where to get more.  Most all hip hop and rap sections in record stores only have the radio promos that have like 5 versions of the same song. Either that or the record I'm looking for came out when vinyl was dead and all I can find is over priced represses, which are still not very common. Anybody have a good outlet for this or am I alone in my desire to blast thug shit?

Most interested in early 90's shit (bonethugs, brothalynch, gravediggaz, souls of mischief, etc)

bonethugs

one of the worst things to ever happen to music.

first EP that came out when Eazy E was co producing and the following first full length are hard as fuck. Everything else is mostly just r n b garbage fuck jamsz.  But you definitely seem to have some opinion...

never heard the first stuff, but i remember that by the time i heard of them they were the biggest group in the u.s. all the kids were talking about how they great they were, and when i checked them out i was mortified with an idiocracy type world view, and the sick feeling that hip-hop was dead.

Creepin On Ah Come Up is cool

I've only found a few early 90s rap LPs for decent prices.  Ultramagnetic MCs...Showbiz and AG...stuff like that...for like 6-9 bucks.

Joe also dislikes Biggie Smalls.

The only hip-hop distro I know of is undergroundhiphop.com

Dusty Groove carries a lot of hip-hop, too, but not much of the thuggish shit.

i listened to that creepin song and it's as awful as i imagined.

i like plenty of biggie actually. gimme the loot is the shit! and embarrassingly i got into him through the notorious movie. i don't like any of the smooth stuff he did, but he did the boom bap perfectly when he wanted to.

by the way, the version i know of "loot" is harder than this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kX5xt90kMA

can you point me to the mix you think i'm looking for?

Glad you've come around on Biggie.  I remember you saying on here a while back that you couldn't hang.  But I dismissed him for the longest time, too, based on most of the shit that was all over the radio and MTV back in the day.

What mix?

i was digging at a local record shop the other day and found a huge stash of early 90s rap 12" singles, picked out a big stack, NOT FOR SALE.  shitty.  put a blanket over that shit or stick it in the back room.

Early 90s G-Rap is the best shit. However, I care more about TAPES! Underground or otherwise. 7"s are to PUNK, what TAPES are to Early-90s G-Rap.

What about "Tha Crossroads" video with the angelic form of Eazy E watching them approvingly? Tell me that's not one of the greatest artistic achievements of the nineties right there. It's at least the most poignant moment in popular music video until Puff Daddy's classic "I'll Be Missing You."

Discogs is the best spot for used rap records, IMO. The market for that shit really bottomed out after Serato came out.

I do wanna get that Steady B Let the Hustlers Play LP again. Parted with it in 1992 in a massive purge to buy textbooks. What a waste, huh?

Another Philly record from the same era is on my wants list....Original Stylin by Three Times Dope.

I still use that phrase "from the giddy-up" because of that album.
Does anyone dare still say something is "acknickulous"? WTF did that mean, really?

i don't recall f.f. being very good, but they were part of that whole "project blowed" scene that had tons of good stuff like aceyalone, and this classic from dolla holla:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0XnZIPKHNY

and this one from abstract rude and tribe unique:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s39lt3xbUKE&feature=related

i loved this at the time, and still think it's good, but i can totally see where BTH took this somewhere else and made it completely un-hip.

yeah, cool. i think it was just their first alb. i was starting to get in to weirder shit at the time so didn't pay it a whole lotta mind.

i was all over project blowed though. wish i still had the lp.

Yeah me too, I've got a ton. But why the fuck do I or anyone else need to read a bunch of boring white people who are either into dark rock, garage rock, minimal synth, or punk rock arguing about what RAP MUSIC is good or bad.

first and foremost, waaaaaa. Don't click the thread if you don't give a fuck, you don't 'need' to read it. Also, you mention you yourself are a fan of this genre of music and own these records, which is why its semi relevant to discuss...?

also this is the funniest video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE5Oq9gZU_Y
