Title: Moving to Madrid
Post by: teens4ever on August 18, 2011, 08:56:49 AM
Hey so I guess I am moving to Madrid in two weeks. Do any of you guys know good neighborhoods to live in? I'm hoping to be able to live alone... is that plausible for around 300-400 euros/month? Also, other recommendations on like bars, venues, where to buy music equipment etc would be cool.

i don't really know madrid at all so i don't know where it's a good place to live.

the places where you usually you can find termbo related gigs or spanish punk / garage shows are usually at the wurlitzer ballroom, sometimes nasti, gruta 77, caracol, fax... probably there are tons more

about pubs etc the best place to hang out i think are near all of them at malasana

and about livin alone for 300-400... it's difficult i think. i don't know much more about madrid but here on barcelona it's difficult to find a place under 500 for livin alone. i have seen some places for 420 or 450 but not less on a decent neighboor. maybe you can find if you have luck and make direct contact with owners but it won't be easy. anyway... i'm talkin about barcelona but i don't think there will be a huge difference between barcelona and madrid

sept 1 fucked up is playing a free mtv show at the river
sept 15 sic alps is playing at El Perro de la Parte de Atr?s del Coche, the best named bar I've ever heard

you're going to find a semi empty city since tuesday the 6th is the constitution day and they don't think twice when there's an oportunity to do what they call a bridge and start the working week on wednesday, so lots of people will leave the city for the long weekend.

I've seen that the Barracudas are playing on Friday:

Viernes, 02 de diciembre a las 21:00
Lugar: Ramdall
Ferraz, 38 - 28008 - Metro Ventura Rodriguez
Madrid, Spain

After that, in Sala Clamores King Shits and Help me Devil are playing too.

In Malasa?a, there will be good R&B and soul DJ's at El Groovie Bar.

I hope you have a good time!! And if you like food, go to La Bola and order "cocido". You won't feel cold for a few hours after that.

Thanks for the info, poodlebites.
I'm missing the Barracudas unfortunately cause we'll be DJing tomorrow in some fancy nightclub (they're paying us the airfare, whoo-hoo). Would love to see them! Will check out El groovie bar & La Bola! Is that fleamarket el Rastro still going this time of the year?

Groovie bar was cool w/ good DJs, and Weirdo which is only a couple blocks over; good r n' r action on the decks and one of the guys who works there is in Los Ass-Draggers (his girlfriend/wife owns the joint I guess), he was real cool.

Eat mushrooms and get lost.

Don't move to where ever I was staying.  If you see a HOTEL CHIC & BASIC ATOCHA with a bunch of mealy bad apples in the window, steal them all, fart in the counter clerk's face and tell her it's from CDY.

yes, el rastro is still happening on sunday mornings. there you can also find satanasa open. it's the munster records shop and usually you can find some good stuff at good prices.

Best advice so far! Will do! Are shrooms easily obtainable there?

Considering we bought some off some kid on the street in a Dead Boys shirt, I'd say, "Yeah, seems like."

back home... what a great weekend it was! Madrid is such an awesome city!!! Those spaniards sure know how to party!
I unfortunately did make it to Barracudas show on friday before DJing -- they were absolutely dreadful! 23 Euros for the most embarrasing concert in recent memory. Wish i didn't go and didn't skew my love for the Barracudas.

Mr Brattos Weirdos Bar is the shit!! Such a fun place!
Also liked La via lactea, Tupperware, LouieLouie ... many cool bars there. Didn't make it to the Groovie Bar unfortunately.
We DJed at Nasti Club which was cool, too.

I wanna go back!

How did the two Termbros go establishing themselves? How did you go finding work/accommodation? Did you both know Spanish reasonably well before the move? I've been considering a move for awhile now, would like to know how you're both fairing

both of us are now back in the us (sup girl!)
I miss the fuck out of Spain (lived there for a year before Madrid) but I strongly believe now is NOT the time to try to move there. no one has work. you are likely to find work as an english teacher if you bullshit your way into some language schools but once you do you have to hustle hustle hustle to make ends meet as less and less potential students have money for classes. other poster might have more to share about that.
knowing spanish is mandatory, so few people know a lick of english.
also, consider another city! madrid is like nyc, super expensive, but so many of the even slightly smaller cities are more affordable and some would argue  more beautiful

Unemployment rate in Spain is currently at a record-high 25%. If you're not highly qualified and/or speak spanish, you can pretty much forget about finding a job there (unless you have some friends/contacts who engage you, obviously).
I agree that there's many other great cities that are  more affordable and maybe even as nice as Madrid to live in. I really liked Gijon, Oviedo and Leon, for example , if you feel like moving up north.
Still, if i moved to Spain i'd propably like to live in Madrid. The people there sure know how to party. The most picturesque part of Spain has gotta be Galicia, though.

heeey-o! well okay, so yes it is a really difficult time to be a Spaniard in Spain, but I think it is not such a bad time to be an English teacher in Spain. If you can get (and tolerate) the gig, and if you speak Spanish, I would highly recommend it. I spoke spanish pretty well before I came, and I came away totally fluent... but I also know people who only hung out with Americans and didn't learn or use much spanish.  I worked 16 hours or fewer a week (20 including 4 private lessons) and brought home a non-insignificant nest egg of euros which I am now using to pay student loans and buy a car while working all the time and commuting in traffic as an american teacher/pig.

Madrid is a great and really fun city, live there! It is expensive, but you're paid a salary commensurate with your region.  The north of Spain is really beautiful but it seems like not as much happens socially/culturally- luckily you will have time and money to travel if you do this teaching thing

here's a link for the english teacher program: http://www.educacion.gob.es/exterior/ca/es/menu_fijo/programas/auxi_canada.shtml, you can also do it through fulbright USA if you are a brown noser and you will get paid slightly more
