When he was in high school he was confronted by an undercover KGB agent for listening to rock 'n roll and was then put in a mental institution where they attempted to chemically lobotomize him. When he got out instead of silencing himself or at least carefully watching his actions and words, he started making punk rock. He was known as the Iggy Pop of the Soviet Union because of his on stage self-mutilation. He was a friend of Yanka Dyagileva and not only saw her perform in my old home town of Kurgan in the late 80's, but performed with her on stage as well. He is still out there today making music, searching out bands that have that spark of passion and life that helped inspire him onto the path he's blazed through history... and from his own accounts, he's come up largely empty handed:

"Were they in prison?
Were they beaten with truncheons?
Were they separated from their mothers?
Did they suffer for their ideas?
Suffer for their faith in rock 'n roll?

No?!

Then fuck 'em!"

In my not-very-fuckin'-humble opinion, it doesn't get better than that. Nope.

this russian guy suffered for his ideas, great, i might be more willing to respect him because of that, but im not gonna give him the consolation prize of automatically hailing his music. thats some apologist horseshit. music is for listening to, not reading about. until this guy puts out a discography as awesome and timeless as the ramones did, he doesnt stand a chance in this fight...

Just sayin', I think that one quote/idea by Nik Rock 'n Roll is far cooler than the whole legacy of the Ramones. I don't expect nor care if most people to agree. A large percentage of people I meet through "punk" are like directly descended from the Ramones, they dress like them, their music often sounds a lot like theirs, they even borrow their outlook and sense of humor. It's not like I'm unaware of their status around here or anything. I happen to think they're a good pop/rock band, but they're not one of my favorites, not even close.

I've heard GrOb referred to as the Russian _______ before too, when they have little in common with anything outside of Siberia. They don't even have much in common with the rest of the Soviet/Russian rock scene.

I would consider them one of my favorites, but they're a band that's mostly pure enjoyment. Sure, I can see the artistic merit in their simplicity etc, but there's other punk bands that are just as good/better than them that have a much more interesting approach and emotional impact and I usually place that above pure enjoyment for things that I'm into.

i also like a lot london calling but i think i prefer the st. after london calling just some songs, not the whole albums.
