Title: Where Are They Now - Gern Blansten Records/Charles Maggio?
Post by: lexdexter on May 01, 2012, 10:38:35 AM
I don't really understand the division of labor between "pop punk" and the regular music sections, but I'm sequestering myself over here because I imagine not all on board are worried about seminal NJ labels of the 90s onward.

Does anybody know specifics about the demise of Gern, where Charles Maggio is now and what he's up to?  I always had him pegged as a lifer at least as much as, say, Sam McPheeters, and would be shocked if he didn't have something going on somewhere.  More importantly I remember him as a great and generous guy who was unduly kind to my young ass and who made records that helped define my teenhood.  (My first show only happened because a barely post-Chisel Ted Leo convinced Charles and Computer Cougar to headline what must have been their fourth gig.  Both acts only accepted half the bread we laid out for them.)

Anyway, I know that towards the end of Gern I missed some Rorschach reunions, which is inexcusable.  I also, to my horror, heard rumors of static with the Leo brothers.  I know that Rye ultimately returned after their major label fiasco... but the bigger picture is unclear.  Lest you think I'm just gossiping - which is also okay, right? - I am asking after Charles and Gern in an attempt to touch base and maybe commence a project that might turn my, uh, flagging life around.  So if you got any info, PUH-LEEZ!

Charles Maggio is now and what he's up to?

Last I paid attention (a few years ago I guess) he was selling records on eBay and at selected record fairs (i.e. WFMU).

I can't speak for Charles Maggio or the Leo brothers but I can tell you that the former guitarist of Merel works at a pizza parlor in Bayonne, a town you'd have to be familiar with to realize how unfortunate a situation that is.  I'm told that most of these guys are not interested in music at all anymore and are just into watching football.

This is all hearsay of course, and 100% gossip.

Am I allowed to find that sad or do I take the, "hell, at least they toured and made a record and lived the life while they were younger" tack?  I remember that Merel LP as being a real sleeper in the Gern catalog but it's been a while...
