Delightful missives from the world of bottom-feeding scum:
The new Moon Duo album ?Circles? is due out very soon through Souterrain Transmissions and I was just notified that they have a special limited edition pre-order for the vinyl which comes to a mere 200 copies in Red. Moon Duo is the amazing side project of the lead guitarist/singer of Wooden Shjips whose albums sell for ridiculous amounts of cash. I believe there will be another pressing of this for the US folks through Sacred Bones which means us flippers get to double dip when this is released on our side of the world because Sacred Bones will definitely have their own ?limited edition?. The good part about flipping this particular version is that there will only be a handful of people who will be importing this to the US which will cost just under $23 shipped? not bad at all for an import!

This is the vinyl record equivalent of flipping crappy insta-condos in Florida in 2006.
A sure sign that a vinyl value bubble is inflating. Luckily it's only in the new turds. In vintage shit it seems in inflate and collapse of its own accord in response to the frantic relative handful of gotta-have-its.
-
I have seen people who only relate to records in this way. Very strange.
-
Definitely one of the stupidest things I've ever seen, especially the "mission statement" and comments that follow.
-
I thought this site was a gag. I guess not.
-
Silly me, I buy records because I actually like them. I have to start thinking in dollar signs all the time.
-
This motherfucker probably used Kickstarter to "fund" this project. Is flipping something people "get into"? I bet this guy has never been hit in the face.
-
I thought this site was a gag. I guess not.
If it were a straight gag, this would be a hell of alot of effort for the resulting larf. Joke is on....?
-
Joke is on the blog's fans: His "buy and hold" suggestions are a sure way to stock up on unsaleable records. Anyone following this guy's suggestions is gonna waste good money. Speaking of...I have some Screaming Trees "limited" Sub Pop singles and a couple Zodiac Mindwarp interview picture discs for sale, if anyone is interested.

Horrible. Absolutely horrible. So bad it might turn into a reality TV show.
-
Instead of "Gate Keeper," can I be "New-Vinyl Speculator" or "Double Dip Flipper?"
-
after eBay fees, is it really worth the $2 bucks he makes off these records?

What a shitty blog, but reminded of this good story about some show ticket flippers:
When "Black Sabbath" was doing that tour with some of the original members earlier this year, some guy tried to flip like 100 of those tickets at 100% profit. Then "Black Sabbath" cancelled and "Ozzy and his friends" replaced them, with the flipper losing tons of money cause he couldn't return 100 tickets or sell them at cost.
-
this blog is the best and cheapest marketing campaign ebay had in a long time.

His take on Mars Live at Irving Plaza LP
"when the No Wave thing was happening no one knew about it* or cared about it and what anyone had heard of the music was, in a word, despised**. Now, 35 years later***, the world seems to have caught up, sort of, and a lot of people want to know what those weirdos were up to back in the darkest days of the Carter administration....Record Flipper recommendation: buy it. This record will not sell out overnight, but quite possibly in a few weeks or a month***. If you are so inclined, you might be able to get at least 2x to 3x what you paid by Xmas.****"
* wrong, no wave was heavily hyped. hit the cover of every english rag, got coverage in rolling stone, not to mention NY Rocker, which pretty much served as it's house voice.
** forced exposure, among others, kept writing about no wave the minute it "died." sonic youth/live skull/etc was considered a no wave revival by some. they certainly wouldnt stop talking about it. there was a no wave revival in the 1990s and in the 00s and in the '10s. in fact, you can say that no wave never really died. just because you found out about it doesnt mean it didnt exist. idiot.
*** they pressed 500. they will sell 300 right away and then 200 will trickle out. if they happen to get a run on it and sell out the pressing in a couple months, it will be sitting forever in record store bins and on-line mail orders. it is a $20 single LP and it is Mars. As great as Mars is in concept, people only "need" one Mars record, and I write that as a fan. As some one who sells records, I know that people only buy one Mars album. Anyway, as the great Bob McDonald once told me in regards to pressing sizes "300 is the new 1000," which makes 500 about 1300. Mars at their height would have a hard time selling 1300 records.
**** You're telling me that some asswipe is gonna pay $60+ for a Mars record 5 months from now? Dude, 5 months from now, stores stuck with that title will be selling it at cost on discogs. You are an idiot.

For more banging your head against the keyboard fun read the grousing about how they are destroying the market for flipping by advising people to flip:

I really think the guy is a remarkable liar. I simply do not believe he or "his friend" was mail-ordering (or listening) to Jandek records when he was 16. Over the last twenty-odd years his tastes would have had to develop past crap and his outlook would be a little less narrow than what number of red vinyl Captured Tracks pressed of release #1015.
-
i remember byron writing an article in spin about jandek, probably royal trux as well, would imagine that would have been the source. remember, spin was actually pretty good there for a while
-
Yes, Byron's Underground column on Jandek came out in '89. I got a copy of that issue at Safeway. I would have been maybe 13 years old. It's how most people found out about him. What's hard to believe is that his "friend" heard about him through WFMU and ordered those records from Corwood; that he "got" those records and enjoyed them; and that they shaped his sensibility. It is impossible at once to know about Jandek and to believe that nobody else does; and if you honestly enjoy and care about this music, it seems unlikely that you would have such a mercenary, condescending relationship to it, and try to sell people on those LBC releases as something comparable. (Anyway, Jandek's not a secret anymore; there's a feature documentary about him; he plays festivals; his CDs are easily obtained anywhere in the world).
Royal Trux was pretty well known by the time Twin Infinitives. Again, what seems contradictory is the attitude, the sensibility. Who is this guy writing for, that he thinks will immediately grasp what he means by that Pusdy Galore reference, and yet not have heard of Jandek by now, and also believe that Moon Duo are "amazing," AND think his terrible advice is worth a shit? It makes no sense. The website scans as the work of someone much younger than he purports to be.

Reads like bullshit, I agree. However, I do recall as early as 'Chair Beside a Window', Corwood was mailing an excessive amount of promos to even the most obscure of zines. A few 16 year olds (or younger) ended up with unsolicited Jandek LP's in the mail. (by the mid '80's, those same records weren't difficult to find in used bins)
It seems like he's appropriated someone else's tale of hearing Jandek for the first time.
-
Or he's just old and ignorant. It's possible he's an "indie" version of the ubiquitous "nothing good after Hendrix" geezer we've all encountered. It's also possible that I didn't read that website and never will and think that, on the surface, this is just as bad as much of the shit bandied about regarding collecting records on this very message board.
-
i really wanna lobby a fake complaint to the guy about how i lost my house and had to sell my wife's prosthetic legs to buy up every record he recommended all over the web at almost any cost because he was so knowledgable of the subject matter and i believed him but they all sit here unsold except a couple of copies some kid with the handle xflipperx1993 bought enthusiastically asking if I had and Jandik. i cant even fathom how this guy doesnt have an ultimate case of self-hatred. 9th or 10th generation concept of punk/diy/good music. that said, you cant manufacture entertainment this good. i just want him to feel bad for making me sell prosthetic legs.

Aside from the fact that this dood is much more long-winded and has much worse taste in music, i don't see a whole lotta difference between that blog and half the shit that pops up on the "Used Records For Sale/Auctions/Wantlists" board. Which is a worse parasite - ticks or tapeworms?

it sounds sentimental as fuck, but it pisses me off that this guy treats records like objects to just be bought and sold. it's still art, at some level, and what he's doing drains it of any sort of value beyond $$. it's a thoroughly cynical gesture and is a glorification of a practice that i think is going to ultimately damage the 'community' or whatever you want to call it.
-
Maybe I can get into record flipping and try to flip some Flipper records. Are any of them worth more than $10 yet?
-
I've bought records over the years that i did not really like musically - Rock and Roll Adventures Kids lp is one - but really liked the album art or, yeah i admit it, for the colored vinyl. I like colored vinyl. Buying vinyl just to flip is ok i guess if it's a way to supplement you or your family food / rent budget, but this record flipper dude is an ass with bad taste and stupid projections on questionable records.
-

that sums up the whole attitude of this blog. mercenary and condescending.
-
Sorry, Sabcat, there's a difference between getting rid of shit you don't want to listen to anymore and buying stuff for the sake of flipping it. Flipping to supplement your income is still shitty.
-
My question: What's worse... This dude or labels and bands creating and marketing there product as limited edition. I mean when there are ten versions of a 500 copy single, you're almost baiting dudes like this to flip your records. It's one thing if you were marketing your product as an art object, but it's not. It's a punk record. I'm not surprised by this dude and I do think it's gross. Even if he flips a few things for profit he probably ends up with more duds that he'll lose on. I'm not down with either sides of the coin, but I do think the collector end of the culture (as opposed to the music lover) contributes to people like this guy existing.
-

I've felt that way for years honestly, i have a bunch of stuff i don't listen to but ...i still have almost every punk record i have bought since the mid 70's. The only time i've sold some records was - regrettably - in '83 and recently i finally unloaded all my 70's -80's rock and prog shit that i finally let go of. I hate when some asshole makes it harder for me to obtain a record i want because of flip greed bullshit. But with people out of work or in menial minimum wage jobs..that's what i was addressing. Somehow eating and shelter takes precedence over aural pleasure sometimes.

if you work a minimum wage job/are jobless and are worried about flipping records, priorities need to be rearranged.

this is why i stopped doing limited editions years ago. we JUST submitted a Hussy LP repress that yes, will be on OPAQUE YELLOW wax, but that was more for fun, and nobody cared. The really bothersome thing to me is thinking about how dumb some of the limited editions out there are. Some people really care about the one that was xeroxed on yellow paper instead of white paper...or the one that has a magnet included in it...or the one that etc etc contains ____mundane, effect-less merits.
I wish more people would stop clinging to the whole defense that it is some reward for the fanbase too. That's true, but is that REALLLLY a "reward" when you're talking about new records whose "variant edition" that's supposedly "so fucking rewarding" is just "another color"? This isn;t like DVDs with two discs full of bonus content, commentary, additional free Blu-Ray transfer etc etc etc. This is a god damn COLOR, which is a lazy-push-button variant of no merit AT ALL. I think I wouldn't have done that Hussy repress on yellow if it WERENT that my whole attitude was coming from "another universe"....it's "just plain fun"...you "know what I mean"? I am not relying on some kind of pre-planned move to push units out the door with it. I just dont see why labels cant either A) amp up their game on the "specialness" of these editions... or B) just supplant those missing sales of lesser "colored" editions by lowering prices a little and living with the results.
-
I just feel like only an idiot would think they were being REWARDED by something with so little to do with content as A COLOR. It's just a meaningless way to separate who was there "first", which of course would encourage douchebaggery, for obvious reasons that exist in the minds of people who like to be everywhere first. But these editions have NOTHING to do with content most times. A person really concerned with content wouldn't give a fuck about what color it is. They would want actual CONTENT that pertains to the ART OF THE ARTIST.
If I'm selling snow cones at my snow cone stand, and I say EVERYBODY WHO GETS HERE BEFORE 5PM GETS A RED CONE, BLUE ONLY AFTERWARD...the only people who would care would be weird people who want to be seen for whatever reason with a RED cone. The ice is the same, and the content is really...the same. Is that a REWARD to the loyal customers who shop there before 5PM? Now, it WOULD be something if the vendor said that everyone who lined up before 5PM got a huge fucking sundae with three scoops of ice cream and sprinkles and crunched up m&ms and shit all over it before 5PM. I guess now THAT would be a reward for the early birds.
-
if i printed 1000 copies of a record on red vinyl, and only 50 on black, you can be certain people would be scrambling for the black like 'oh em gee gotta have it before they're all gone!!!!', and the price would go way above whatever color i printed more on - i think at this point, the notion of record-collecting-with-a-capital-C has set in so thoroughly that a lot of people fantasize about having a super-valuable collection in 40 years, and they just assume that whatever is printed in smaller volumes is 'more valuable,' but the joke's on them, because it's 'more valuable' because everybody thinks it's 'more valuable' - or maybe that means the joke's on us. i don't know - point is, vinyl color/special editions of the kind you're talking about TTT are just means of creating false urgency and encouraging better sales - it's seen as MORE VALUABLE and SUPER XTRA XCLUSIVE just because it's labeled as such. no different than the McRib being available 'for a limited time only' or whatever, even though they roll it out more or less regularly.

It's not like there are no precedents. Trying to manufacture rarities tends to backfire. I would like to see a speculator site advising people to invest on mid-80s Blue Oyster Cult records.

If you want to reward the fan base, figure out a way to engineer a happy ending at the record's finish.

This is not even similar. The comic world's problem was printing way too many issues and considering them collectible just right before consumers decided they had had enough. If you manufacture a rare variant of 50 copies off of a press of 500 (which is still small and collectible), it's quite possible it will be collectible. It worked like hell for the Misfits, that's for damn sure. But that's no indicator that Blank Dogs can cash in like a mo fo in 30 years from now.

this "manufactured rarities" discussion was almost interesting 5 years ago. reading all you same fucknuts regurgitate the exact same opinions is so tired (except maybe TTT, tho i certainly don't have the patience to read whether he's now contradicting his former self). nothing any one of you idiots say will have the tiniest smidge of an impact on token label douche's decision to press up a limited edition "fake" rarity, nor the reality that hundreds of sheep will line up to buy them. why not just shut up now?
-
it's only a manufactured rarity if nobody would have bought it in a regular edition. great records will be collectible to some degree no matter what color, edition, etc.

Jesus. Not sure if I should be getting as angry as I am, but that is some bullshit. It's essentially like paying for stock tips. Are labels colluding? Where's the SEC? How have ten people given these guys $100?
-
Sorry, Sabcat, there's a difference between getting rid of shit you don't want to listen to anymore and buying stuff for the sake of flipping it. Flipping to supplement your income is still shitty.
I disagree. What's wrong for example, with buying 5 records from a local store and flipping one of them to make a small profit? Especially when that profit likely goes back into buying more records from the same store. It's tough to pass on a crappy 90's grunge LP for $20, when you know you can flip it for $100 to some guy in Germany.
On the other hand, I can also see why you would consider flipping "shitty". It often turns into cutthroat b.s. (aka Record Store Day)
-
Well, specifically in regard to buying and flipping new, limited run releases - it makes the records even more unavailable. If a label puts out 300 copies of a Johnny & the Dumdums 45, 400 fans want it but 50 of those people buy 2 or 3 copies each to flip on eBay a month later as "unplayed"... that's shitty. Totally different if you find some forgotten gem in the bins and want to sell it.

Yes, in 100% agreement in regards to mail ordering several copies of limited run pressings in hopes of flipping. Those latest Bill Orcutt singles are a perfect example. For a month or two you could buy copies online for $7 and flip for $25. Now there are a buttload of them sitting on Discogs.

Is there a way to hack in and sell those leads for significantly less to the "casual flipper" chumps?
-
It would have been cool to have a record flipper guide me in my early teens.
"See, you'll want to join the Sub Pop singles club, but you already missed most of the good stuff, and take this advice, once the records start getting bad, leave & don't look back. You'll also want to look for people selling their old punk records to buy this new grunge shit. Take advantage of that. And I know how much you love the Damned and Dead Kennedys but you should try to buy some things you see by old bands you've never heard. Also, about ten years from now, buy every White Stripes record you see, I don't care how bad it is."
-
Is there a way to hack in and sell those leads for significantly less to the "casual flipper" chumps?
You could offer $50 to someone that bought the subscription and then sell the leads...
This dipshit is just doing what a lot of investment blogs do. Offer bullshit hyperbole and then ask to be paid for it. Except, here there is no S&P 500 or SPY to track, no share price history to track, no Price/Earnings history to track, no triple/double top peaks, etc. Just worthless inherent, speculation. Based on...what? Pathetic attempt to couple the vinyl market with the investments market.
The two don't even go hand in hand. The investments market is ONLY about making money. Period. There is no other motivating factor. People react based on whether they think they are going to gain or lose money. The vinyl market is chock full of people who buy that have no intention of making money. They buy for other reasons besides making money. In fact, I'm gonna guess that the strong majority of people who buy records aren't doing it to make money. They are doing it because they like the record, they want to be included, they don't want to miss out, they like the cover art, they like the song being covered, they like the artists other records, they think the song title is funny, they want the color vinyl, they want the raer item, etc ad nausea.
If people are paying him $100 for investment advice, they have been properly scammed. There is nothing to base this dudes speculation on, on anything other than guessing. There isn't a standardized track record that is measured over years. So please let me stop anyone that is going to chime in with, "I saw _________ sell for ________ on ebay, so __________ is going to sell for ____________ on ebay!!!" Besides, I've yet to see any detailed analysis macro market analysis (because it's basically impossible because there is no established market for records that were released ) On the other hand, if people are paying $100 to be alerted to when the next raer is going to be available for purchase, dude has a better chance of making some money at this game.
Personally, I hope this duo fails. Not cause I give a shit if they get $8,000 a year to blindly speculate as to what is highly profitable, but because this really is the lowest of the low in the record game.
-
I also wrote a comment on that blog that is, "awaiting moderation". Dipshits.

This blog seemed just odd when it 1st got posted here but reading it through now it seems weirdly anal and pathetic.
On a different tack I liked this ......
A couple of the guys that played with Branca on his early records went on to start a famous band. The famous band, which took some of Branca?s ideas, namely jamming drumsticks into the strings of oddly-tuned guitars and playing them very loudly, jazzed those ideas up with some hoo-ha about a No Wave revival, wrote a song glorifying Charles Manson, and made a fortune. Ha-ha: take that Terminal Boredom dudes!
....take what exactly? Is this an ill-articulated dig at presumed SY fans on TB?
