Title: Iceland
Post by: teenfrenzy on March 04, 2013, 12:56:08 PM
Planning on heading there for two weeks in July with two friends. One week in Reykjavik and another week renting a car and driving around the exterior. Anyone traveled there? Recommendations on things to check out would be hugely appreciated.

My wife lived there for a year, I can ask her. Apart from the shitty weather she has only nice things to say about the island.

That would be awesome. Figured I ought to get a heads up from folks in the know.

Just found out about the Iceland Phallological Museum, which I'll definitely be visiting.

Don't go gaga after seeing your first beautiful waterfall, they are a dime a dozen. Visit the NW Fjords. Dalvik Great Fish Days are apparently quite wonderful. You might want to pair down your time in Reykjavik to just a few days unless you have specific plans there.

Was in Iceland last summer (with 20 odd teenagers in tow!!) on an organised tour. The countryside was amazing. I'd love to go back to Reykjavik - even just walking along the front and around the Tjornin (central lake) was amazing. The main shopping street Laugavagur looked pretty cool, lots of independent little shops and it has the Bad Taste/Smekkleysa record shop. Definitely also take time to go and see the Hallgrimmskirkja and go up to the viewing platform. Perlan, the geothermal energy store, also has great views over the city but isn't quite as grand.

As for the interior - we did the Golden Circle type stuff which was all great if you're a geography/geology buff (as a geography teacher I'm firmly in that category): Gullfoss, Thingvellir, Geysir/Strokkur. There are some amazing waterfalls along the SW coast, Seljalandsfoss being one but there are smaller, less known ones that are just as, if not more, amazing to see and walk around. We also went up to a glacier along the coast which for me was the highlight seeing small pro-glacial icebergs calve off. Stayed in a really nice and welcoming farmhouse called Vatnsholt which had quite a few rooms and was in the shadow if Hekla and Katla, two of the larger volcanoes.

And I know it's kinda touristy but the Blue Lagoon was a great way to end our trip - just so surreal to be out doors and be so warm in the water. It is rather pricy but such an experience - a bit like the country itself really.

Hope some of this is useful, the names might be a little off but hopefully they can point you in the right direction. Icelandic is a difficult language to grasp, although being Scottish a few words are pretty similar (oot for out, bairn for kid and such like)
