I really want to play the Gathering before I die. Heck, that might end up being HOW I die, but still.

Rahzel, Brother Lynch Hung & Onyx. Sounds like a good time.

I played Old Barn Fest in western WI in the late 90's. It was the crust punk/train hopper gathering of the juggalos. Shit was one of the best times of my life.

Juggalo night court sounds like the highlight to me.

Didn't they stop doing old barn after someone got stabbed?

the whole wrestling segment looks pretty legit.   i would love to see the japanese giant monster wrestling show.  and i really like how they encourage getting drunk, getting high, and vulgarly heckling the "16 hotties and 2 heffers" lady wrestlers...  looks like a good time all around.   that episode of workaholics where they go to the gathering really sold "the community" part for me...

I went to this for work two years ago and saw george clinton, ice cube, too short, bobby brown, and a bunch others. plus the wrestling was pretty legit. It was pretty fun the first few days, but by the end, when the crowd started running out of money (and drugs) things got pretty weird.

I'm curious how much it costs to rent that place out. I believe it's been rented out for raves before.  It'd be cool to set up a Gathering of the Juggalos style punk fest that turned into raves at night.

A rave?  Aren't those designed for Paris Hilton types.

Anything worth checking out on the wrestling side of this Gathering?  Colt Cabana does work with these kats sometimes.

Seriously? Paris Hilton probably wouldn't even be allowed admittance to a real rave. The best raves are the ones in places where you wonder if it's even legal for you to be there.

yeah I'm not making the connection there. Ususally when I think of that parasite, I think of shopping and toy poodles and LA, not a dirty warehouse where you go to get your sick kicks while someone blasts beats into the next day.

Budget must be tight this year. This video seriously sucks compared to the Apocolypse Zombie video from last year.

Also, does ICP pay off the Town Council and police in Cave-In Rock? I could only imagine this would be the definition of shooting fish in a barrel for law enforcement. Low level weed tickets all day at a minimum, wtf is going on here?

Downstate Illinois... the cops are probably Juggalos.

Provincial hilljacks can be compelled to look the other way given the massive cash infusion provided by The Gathering. I'm sure I.C.P. could find another impoverished rural community somewhere in the Midwest to play host should C.I.R.P.D. choose to play Roscoe P. Coltrane.

no cops or security or anything at the fest, but the police actually set up an adjunct HQ or whatever at an old elementary school down the street, and pretty much pull over as many people en route to the gathering as they can.

In-house embroidery? Psychopathic is DIY as fuck.

All joking aside, I am amazed at what they have accomplished. A pseudo gang begat a rap group which begat a record label which begat a multi-million dollar empire which begat a cult that has now finally morphed into a legitimate culture. Yes, anthropologists should get on the good foot and start astudying. Juggalos have their own customs, language, foodstuffs, governance, belief system, and rituals aplenty far more complex than those found in punk or hip-hop or even among Deadheads and Parrotheads. Juggalo culture has now entered its second generation with no signs of stopping. The next logical step is statehood. Mark my words ninjas, if Juggalo culture survives another generation expect to see a nation-state or at least a semi-autonomous region somewhere in the Rustbelt / Heartland. The Nazis couldn't pull it off in the Idaho panhandle and Texan secession was a bust, but Psychopathic Horrorcore Hatchet-Swinging Everybody Killas actually get shit done.

May have already happened. In Chippewa Falls, during the Old Barn fest discussed here earlier, one of the attendees (Nate Berg), was a local politician, he was also a columnist for MRR. So, punk politicians have certainly already existed. Although, if memory serves, I believe he gave up on politics after not too long when he realized how futile it was and helped found a radical left wing magazine or something like that?

...just google'd him while writing this, now I guess he writes for the New York Times and NPR.  Cool.

Write that column and send it in, they might just publish it. MRR still rules and is still relevant despite the yammering  of out-of-touch naysayer playa haters.

If you're familiar with Michigan politics you're not doubt aware that the possibility of Sen. Joseph Utsler J-Novi is not unlikely.  Google Don Williamson, Kwame Kilpatrick, Woodrow Stanley, Dick Posthumous, Pete Hoekstra etc. etc. ad infinitum for further evidence. Not as insane as Minnesota politics or the South in general, but still...

While it would not be all that surprising if a closet Juggalo has already been elected, there has not yet been an open, proud, out-of-the-closet, Faygo-swilling, face paint donning, chicken-hunting, psychopathic serial killa who has held office. Juggalos are basically non-racist Libertarians who not only advocate for legalization of drugs, but actually partake... and have horrible taste in music, fashion, culture, and so on. Long rapsheets may be a problem for most.

Mayor of Saginaw and State Rep. for the south and west sides of Flint... hell, all of Genesee County is a distinct possibility. Given the sorry state of bipartisan politics, I might just vote Juggalo and watch the literal fireworks. Woot woot!

We hear a lot about indigenous folk cultures being overwhelmed and lost on account of globalization and pop culture, but Juggalos I believe might be the first instance of pop-based culture devolving into folk culture. Hatchet-swingin' psychopathic killaz are becoming more isolated from the main stream... and thriving. They are developing their own language (woot woot), belief system (Dark Carnival, joker cards), food stuffs (Faygo), music (horror core), clothing (face paint, limited edition t shirts), cultural norms, customs, and mores. They are now in their second generation and as long as rural and suburban poverty festers in the Midwest the will continue to grow. When they can't recruit new DNA they'll breed a new generation. Juggalos may not be as prolific as the Amish and they may not last for centuries, but you should expect to hear about Juggalos for at least another 50 years. Geriatric Juggalo nursing home assaults will someday be reality.

Haha! If I was 20 years younger I might dive headlong into this strange cultural anthropology. Better leave that to future Margaret Meads.

I collected mountains of free detritus during my long tenure in Michigan. Promo cassingles, fliers, posters, articles from free music monthlies. A good chunk of this was ICP-related. After allowing it to age for a decade or so I began to sell it on ebay. $30 for a xeroxed flier or an old copy of the Metro Times was not atypical. Little did I know then the future cultural importance of those artifacts- one in particular. I believe a flier from an early 90s ICP-related backyard wrestling show may include the root derivation of the word Juggalo. On the lllloooonnnnnnggggggg list of wrestlers was one by the name of "Jugglenutz."

Quote from: Simon & Schuster
When memoirist and head writer for The A.V. Club Nathan Rabin first set out to write about obsessed music fans, he had no idea the journey would take him to the deepest recesses of both the pop culture universe and his own mind. For two very curious years, Rabin, who Mindy Kaling called ?smart and funny? in The New Yorker, hit the road with two of music?s most well-established fanbases: Phish?s hippie fans and Insane Clown Posse?s notorious ?Juggalos.? Musically or style-wise, these two groups could not be more different from each other, and Rabin, admittedly, was a cynic about both bands. But once he gets deep below the surface, past the caricatures and into the essence of their collective cultures, he discovers that both groups have tapped into the human need for community. Rabin also grapples with his own mental well-being?he discovers that he is bipolar?and his journey is both a prism for cultural analysis and a deeply personal exploration, equal parts humor and heart.

Well, this is probably the classiest story on the music internet this morning. Andrea Pellegrini, a former publicist for the Insane Clown Posse, is suing the Detroit duo for sexual harassment, and among other allegations (e.g., the 2012 Gathering Of The Juggalos was ?a living hell?) she claims that the former ICP and Psychopathic Records employee ?Dirty Dan? Diamond tried to give her a glass dildo as a gift once. When she refused to accept it, Pellegrini claims that Diamond gave the, um, item to Kid Rock, who apparently still has possession of it. The Detroit Free Press reports that Pellegrini?s attorneys have subpoenaed Kid Rock, telling him to give up the glass dildo so that they can use it as evidence. Beyond the obvious troubling-if-true harrassment allegations, this whole thing raises some questions. For instance: Isn?t it bad etiquette to give someone a gift after someone else has already turned it down? Kid Rock appeared on ICP?s first album Carnival Of Carnage 22 years ago! Doesn?t he deserve his own glass dildo? Also, how?s Kid Rock even supposed to find the dildo in what?s sure to be an extensive glass dildo collection? I hope he?s got them all clearly labeled.

http://www.stereogum.com/1693871/kid-rock-subpoenaed-to-produce-glass-dildo-as-evidence-in-insane-clown-posse-lawsuit/news/

But it gets better.

Quote
The tale of the regifted glass dildo turned some heads a few weeks ago when it was reported that Kid Rock was asked to procure said dildo to use as evidence in a sexual harassment lawsuit against former Insane Clown Posse and Psychopathic Records employee ?Dirty Dan? Diamond. Kid Rock has now released two letters on his website that he says were sent to lawyers on both sides. His statement starts definitively enough, in all caps: ?All parties involved in this ICP glass dildo case can shove one up their ass.? He goes on to say that he?s never met any of the people involved and that he has never been in possession of the alleged glass dildo. He also personally attacks both lawyers, calling one side ?douchebags? and ?a blight on our planet? and the other ?the worst kind of scum.? Read his letters below ? they?re truly an entertaining read.

To the lawyers representing Andrea Pellegrini, who filed the suit and claimed that Kid Rock was gifted the dildo:

Dear Jim Rasor and Jon Marko,

I?m told that you have issued a subpoena for a ?glass dildo? that was supposedly given to me. No idea what you?re talking about, and I definitely don?t have it. I?ve never heard of, seen, or met any people involved in this case. But I?m pretty sure you already know that. What I do know is that you?ve been dragging my name around in the media to gain attention for your sad ass excuse for a law firm. I don?t care what you do when you finally catch up to the ambulances you chase, but I do care when you bring my name into it for no reason at all.

Let me ask you this. Say in a lawsuit that another crappy firm was handling, your names were brought up for no reason. You wake up one morning, excited for a new day of exploiting the legal system and people dumb enough to look at your website (nice pictures btw, did you study how to look like douchebags in college?), and when you open the newspaper there?s a report from someone you?ve never heard of talking about how Jon Marko and Jim Rasor got caught molesting animals at a petting zoo while high on bath salts. Now imagine you weren?t the scumbags you are, but a citizen who has raised millions of dollars for his hometown, spent hours helping to promote the arts, had helped wounded veterans returning from combat. Say you were people who aren?t a blight on our planet ? wouldn?t you be pissed off that your name, for days on end, was being mentioned in the press when EVERYONE involved knew you weren?t involved in any way? Welcome to my side of this story.

-Kid Rock

To the lawyers representing ?Dirty Dan? Diamond:

Dear Brian E. Koncius,

I?m told that your client has testified under oath in a deposition that he presented a former employee of Psychopathic Records with a glass dildo, who then allegedly gave the dildo to me? There are only two possible explanations for what your client said: either he is an absolute pathological liar, who for some insane reason decided to make up a bullshit story using my name or 2: he thinks he?s a comedian and was trying to be funny. If he was joking then he?s just an asshole who isn?t funny. But if it was not 100% clear that he was attempting to make a joke, then he just lied under oath because I?ve never met your client, and if I had met your client I?d certainly remember if he tried to give me a glass fucking dildo. Even if it was the ?Rasor Law Firm? that sent a press release to the press, you have done nothing to clear up this blatant lie which makes you to blame too. It is obvious that all you assholes are using my name and notoriety to garner publicity for yourselves, which makes you the worst kind of scum. You?re the types of lawyers that make America a worse place for everyone.

I live in Detroit because I can stay out of the fray here and live my life the way I chose to. If I wanted to deal with this shit I?d move to LA, and if I want press, I can get it ? trust me. No matter why your client said what he did, it?s clear that you, your client, and the Rasor Law Firm have gone out of your way to help get this story told. How would you feel if one day your name appeared across the internet connected to a story you knew absolutely nothing about. One day you come downstairs to the angry glare of your wife who asks if you really were arrested over the weekend for driving high on crystal meth with a bound and gagged hooker in your trunk. Did you? Because it?s all over the internet, some lawyer you?ve never met put it out in a press release! Must be true right? I?m guessing you probably wouldn?t like that, and would at least appreciate it if the guy who made it up admitted that you never did those things.

Your website says you represent people who are ?interested in doing the right thing.? I don?t believe that, but prove me wrong.

'sup, Ninjas...

I suspect Juggalo Culture is producing few young spawn... you basically have to be birthed into the culture now. That said, if you walk the streets of places like Effingham, Battle Creek, and Lima you'll probably see plenty of Hatchet Man stickers. The culture will persevere for at least a couple more decades, but it will continue to fly under the radar because America has ignored the Midwest for decades.

Don't be surprised if somewhere along the line Violent J is transformed into an actor or comedian or something.
