Title: New Orleans Aug 6-9
Post by: clif on July 27, 2014, 08:59:16 AM
I will be attending a wedding for one of my wife"s college friends during these dates. Any shows going on? I will probably be spending most of the time babysitting our son while everyone else drinks themselves into a stupor, but i figured I could guilt trip my wife into letting me out one night if something real cool was happening. So, what's up?

Of course we will be in the french quarter ( i know, i know) but any record stores easy to get to from there? Feel free to tell me to search the other new orleans threads for record stores if you must.

Cheers

Man, I don't think there is a single worthwhile show going on during those days.

Skully'z Records is in the French Quarter.  I don't usually shop there -- it's hard to find parking nearby, the store is really small and most of the records are in packed milk crates making it hard to flip through them.  It's also vaguely organized.  He's got a decent selection, however, although there aren't a ton of used records in there.

Euclid Records is about 1.5 miles away from the Quarter, depending on where you stay.  It's got what is by far the biggest selection of records in New Orleans.  If you're looking for something specific, you're most likely to find it here.  I've always found their prices to be high, but others find them reasonable.

Domino Sound Record Shop is about 2 miles away from the Quarter (although in a different direction than Euclid, meaning you can't easily hit both).  This is my favorite shop in the city, personally.  Prices are low, the rock and punk sections are pretty high quality (this is definitely more of a quality over quantity situation), and there's a reasonable soul section, as well.  There are a ton of international records, particularly from Africa, if you're into that type of thing (I guess that's what they "specialize" in).  It seems that they don't do a ton of used records (which are mixed in and not marked in any way to differentiate them from the new), but again, low prices overall.   CASH ONLY, however.

Louisiana Music Factory is an easy walk from anywhere in the Quarter -- it moved to Frenchman Street earlier this year.  I never go in here, but it seems like their selection has gotten significantly worse since the move.  If you're into jazz, you'll want to stop by -- otherwise, don't bother.

There's one more place called Jim Russell's Records or something on Magazine, but I've never been and I doubt you'll be missing out if you don't either.

Made it to two record shops. Hit up Euclid at the end of a day and found a nice used record. Easy walk up chartres except for the heat. Domino Sound was a pretty easy walk to. Up esplanade. Really good store. Found too much stuff there and had to put some stuff back. Found a used Laughing Hyenas "Life of Crime" in the metal section. Once again, the heat had me seating through the paper bag by the time I got back to the hotel. Definitely the better of the two. Nice things can be found a Euclid with some patient digging it seems. Thanks for the tips. Would have had no time for a show anyway with the wedding activities required. Cheers.
