Title: Zurich
Post by: fever trip on December 12, 2014, 01:49:26 PM
Going to Zurich Feb 1st. Staying with a friend working on a PhD there. I've ever been to Europe before and the only other country I've been to outside of the US is Canada. Vancouver is hardly different from Seattle....

Anybody know where the underground punk/noise/jazz/performance stuff happens? Do people do that here?
What should I be eating? Any worthwhile hikes/sights?

Got a whole month to bum around there, planning on taking trains to other cities/countries but I'm not sure on just where yet. Too many options.

Maybe it's a long shot but I met this weird guy who does ambient music through tape manipulation, he's from Basel which shouldn't be too far from Zurich, I assume he would know about experimental/noise music: http://melebemisanthrop.bandcamp.com/ - https://www.facebook.com/melebemisanthrop (name is Oliver)

This is totally the stuff I'm always looking for, Ill try to get in touch with him to find about interesting venues and upcoming events. Thanks! My friend tells me Basel is a short train ride from Zurich.

I know you live in the north of Italy (somewhere...) is there anything a shitty American "finding himself" would enjoy doing there in February?

Well it depends on what you're looking for, apart from yourself.
FUN?
Both Milano and Torino, which are both beautiful and very much fun are really close to the Swiss border.
Torino in particular is a blast, couple of cool live clubs, great squats, experimental music/art spaces, and in a city that looks like a smaller version of Paris. It's fucking beautiful. Everybody's on shrooms. There's a huge open air thrift market every Saturday that looks like a North African Suk. http://siamosolonoiserecords.bandcamp.com/album/v-a-suk-tapes-and-sounds-from-porta-palazzo
Milano is more cynical, expensive and gentrified, lotsa people working in advertising, fashion, television... but still it's one of Italy's major cities so you can find anything you want: squats, record stores, beautiful wo/men, every band that comes to Italy goes through Milano. It's a beautiful city but in a less obvious way than Torino, you gotta look harder. Everybody's on coke.
QUIET?
Every other place in Northern Italy. It's just chock full of little sleepy towns on the mountains (you have to see the Alps, seriously, just google whatever, Dolomites, Mont Blanc... they're gonna blow your mind) or, if you just go south past Torino and Milano, you'll find yourself in one of Europe's biggest lowlands. 'Tis all fields and small university towns and one big river that goes through. That's where I live.

Just PM me if you want to know anything specific. Like, for example, Pere Ubu are passing through Italy in February, that's cool. But I can't think of any other special February event, just ask me later.

Saw some cool squat shows in Zurich about 10 years ago. Much wilder city than you'd expect. I liked it.

Hey fever trip, still need suggestions for Italy? Get this: Feb 20th, Pere Ubu in Verona - Feb 21st His Electro Blue Voice release party (http://www.mapledeathrecords.com/mdr001/) in Bologna. I'm going to both, hit me up if you need a lift.
