Ebay has killed the ability to search by bidder. Scammers to blame. That's how I found like half of my stuff from there since the site started. Happy for my wallet, bummer for anyone trying to sell things off because I won't be there to pump up the price for you anymore, since I probably won't be searching for auction descriptions ala:
"Name of specific band" single 45rpm
or
LA? band mystery ranting oddball??? (turns out to be Opus or something)
or
pile of weird vinyl from the 70s/80s cheap!!!
(which would have, like, 10 abbreviated Dangerhouse 45s in it and be listed under cds or something)
There are too many search criteria and not enough time in the day to sit there and pound the endless variables in. I can't tell you how many weird and great records I found on ebay for $5-$10 a pop over the years by simply following bidder trails to see where they led me, it was literally the same as leafing through the new arrivals bin. And you don't find them listed as kbd or punk or psych or even in the music section. Now you have to either save a million search variables or look for THAT band in THAT week to find it. Boring. The stone faced pros with 8 hours to search a day are gonna clean up the next few months, and more than a few buyers ain't getting $200 for their retard-described 1979 wave obscuros no more.

what do you mean by bidder? like by amount of bids, or by seeing what bidder is bidding on which things?
-
Yeah, this one really pissed me off too. Searching bid histories was an easy way to get an overview of what's up there, who's bidding, and how much stuff is selling for. Most of the time I didn't even use this info to capitalize on scores for myself (though of course I was happy when it did); it was more of a way just to keep up with things. I barely have enough time in the day to keep up with the daily "punk" postings, nevermind garage, new wave, and whatever's hidden/misfiled in general "rock" or other categories.
They say scammer "bad guys" (an actual childish quote from their explanation) are to blame, but I'm sure it has more to do with them missing out on their cut of people hitting up underbidders and selling outside of ebay, thus avoiding listing/final value fees.
Ryan's right, unless you have elaborate daily searches in place and the time (and patience) to wade through tons of crap, we're going to be missing out on lots of stuff. Fuck.
And to boot, eBay just rendered "lewdsnot" irrelevant.

what do you mean by bidder?
I mean you can't search by bidder, to see what thw or lewdsnot or zoloft_anaconda or jycke or krvitz or any of the other defacto punk 'search engines' are bidding on, at all. You can only find out what they won in the past, which is rather useless to me.
I will literally buy and bid on like 1/3 of what I used to bid on. Like I said, sellers should be bummed.
-
oh, I didn't know you could do that anyway
-
Yup, as noted a great way to score records and find some very unusual between the cracks stuff or see what people you know are buying or to see what bidders on your auctions are willing to pay - it is always nice to see some one bid on an auction of yours who has a history of bidding high on everything.
-
But it also sucked to be the one who gets stalked on ebay. I've been on there since the nineties and have several people who seek out my bidder list and will snipe me at the last second to outbid me. That led me to keep several different ebay accounts. Ebay enemies.... ahhhh!!!!
-
Yep, I used this system to keep track of a bidder and see what he bought. It was a good way to get stuff you didn't know about. I guess the best you can do now is search for member names and then check their feedback. Maybe that would eliminate competition for records? At least between you and the bidder you are tracking.
-
Yeah, I was mostly a bidder-stalker on ebay. Who wants to enter variations on:
new wave vinyl record rare punk powerpop power pop weird mint private pic sleeve rock misfits clash no wave arty obscure old stock box lot LP 7" EP disc 45rpm 33rpm new york synth ultra mega mondo stupid dork evil matrix
all day, not to mention specific bands whose searches you don't already have saved. Thats like real work.

This thread combined with other recent threads convinced me to re-register on ebay.
Got the old Alive and Kicking comp 7" (Dave Grohl's first vinyl apperance (Mission Impossible)) for $20.
