Title: Net Neutrality
Post by: ripiancurtis on January 18, 2018, 04:03:20 PM
Is anybody else freaking out about this? If Congress isn’t able to vote and reverse the FCC’s decision, this could totally fuck up so many of the distros that post on here (along with a ton of other online businesses). Same with a ton of blogs that people use as a resource.

Is the “Wild West” internet coming to an end? I need a Tide Pod to calm my nerves..

I haven't been following this, but I know youtube is cracking down on people. A couple of MGTOW guys got their stuff taken down, then put back up.

If they take away Pornhub my life is over.

yeah i was thinking of porn.  hopefully this does affect people sooner than later, i have to assume many trump supporters wouldnt like having to pay more to stream video (porn).  could cost them big time at the polls.

and yeah it would affect all kinds of small businesses.  what if they slow down bandcamp for instance?  thats a tiny company by the numbers, but it provides a reasonable income for alot of people.  unlike getting your stuff on amazon, itunes, spotify, pandora or whatever, there is no charge.  they take just 15% of actual profits.  makes it really easy for a small band with a few fans to earn a couple bucks to fund physical product or whatever.

in other words, a dipshit like me actually loses money from all online streaming services if you take a site like bandcamp out of the equation.  that would be a fucking bummer to alot of people, as streaming revenue for the other, larger, more popular sites adds up to almost nothing.

Yeah, it'll be bad. I don't take it lightly. I interviewed Robert McChesney back when Tim Wheeler was toying with the idea of jettisoning net neutrality -- paraphrasing, "Net neutrality is everything."

I honestly think it will be a good, though very difficult thing if the internet is rendered useless. There have been many great things that have come from the Internet, or at least important and transformative things, but ultimately it?s like a psychedelic in that after excessive use you get diminishing returns and eventually there is nothing more to learn from it and it becomes little more than recreational entertainment and distraction. Unlike almost any psychedelic it is psychologically addictive beyond measure.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a youth Luddite/anti-internet movement. Just not a thing. People's lives (and mating strategies) are so tied into this world; nobody wants to give it up. People will disregard certain parts of the internet, like Facebook, but not give up the whole deal.

Super addictive: it's all based on a variable rewards system, so it gets people hooked. They study Las Vegas casinos and slot machines when they build a lot of these apps and sites. A friend of mine is on SSI: he was bitching about how he is online almost all day. Took apart the computer and put it in a box about a month ago. Nada. Claims he is much happier now.

First we lose Net Neutrality and now this tax law ruling?!?!

Not sure how or when this could be impacting everybody but this sucks.

Will this really effect the bottom line of small online retailers? Don't you think most people just won't pay attention to the fact that there will be tax added at the end of the transaction, like shipping? Don't get me wrong, small businesses get completely fucked by the IRS and the state, something my own family, being self-employed ourselves, has experienced. However, I feel like apart from the annoyance of having to keep track of the tax money and actually get it paid, I find it hard to imagine it's really gonna have a huge impact on sales for the mom and pop's and this is the kind of shit that has given people like Amazon an unfair advantage over competition.

note: According to this article, it currently is in effect for businesses that are making more than $100,000 a year or selling more than 200 items in the state that would then tax them, so effectively, small time mom and pop type one person or family operations are exempt from this at the moment at least.

That, sounds, at least, like a win for everyone. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of issues with what our tax dollars are spent on, but considering how many people I know who are getting fucked because we don't have enough more for important social and infrastructural services, I'm in total support of taxing the wealthy.

I didn’t see the 100k rule so that is a huge win at least. You’re right on the fact that a few bucks isn’t much but I know a ton of record stores that have a “pay cash and I won’t charge you tax” rule. This is nice because it helps everybody on both sides of the transaction. I know that’s besides the point since that’s sales inside an actual store.

I’m thinking of it more as a personal “fuck” just because like you said it’s another thing that I’ve gotta try to keep track of when I pay my taxes for the shop. I’m already terrible at bookkeeping and always behind on any/all paperwork.

With both of these decisions (net neutrality and this tax ruling) happening so close to each other I can’t help but feel the “little guy” can never win. In the end my taxes aren’t a giant financial burden, but I only have to keep track of sales in one single state (my own). Hopefully that 100k rule stays in tact because then I won’t have to worry about this stuff.

Slightly on topic but also off: The FOSTA shit, which fights online sex trafficking, has also shut down the Back Page personals and the Craigslist personals. Craigslist personals were kind of legit: you could search not just for casual encounters, but also work out buddies, people in recovery, etc. It wasn't just sex. Kinda shitty.

The net is getting weird. They have both completely vanished from the web.

That shit is brutally dangerous, and even, or especially if it effects only sex workers who are already marginalized and alienated from the medical/legal/etc establishment.

People are talking about going to the streets or starting to do this in bars. It's nuts: that was their main source of income.

Good article: https://www.thecut.com/2018/04/7-sex-workers-on-what-it-means-to-lose-backpage.html

While this shit is truly awful, I?m not quite sure why someone just doesn?t set up a service like back pages on the dark web or hosted in another country. Even if it is not legal, neither is most sex work.
