Have any of you purchased personalized ear plugs? There's a few places that offer to fill your ears with foam, cast a mould and create "musician" ear plugs. This is something I've always meant to invest in, but haven't had the extra funds until now. The only thing I'm uncertain of is what range is appropriate (ex. 15db vs. 25db) and what would be considered "overprotection".
Opinions/info appreciated.

The people I know who have them love them (I just use regular ear protection). I think -25db is the way to go, -15 is a lot less than you might think.

I bought a set of these and they're the best I've owned (I haven't ever forked out for the fancy, personal fitted ones) - they're the first set I can play a show in without feeling like everything I'm hearing has a thick condom over it.
Plus they're cheap enough that you don't have to sweat over losing em

I played in punk bands until the ripe age of 29, sans protection, and occasionally while I am reading I will get a really loud, painful buzz in my ears. It's horrible. So yeah...cover them ears.

sorry, this isn't helping with your inquiry, but i really don't understand why anyone would wear ear plugs to play or listen to music they love. are you people not prepared to go deaf for pleasure?

I got some last year, I really like them. I think I got the 15db ones, maybe 20, they work great for me, they don't make songs sound like mush.

I've never met an audio martyr before.

hi

...but i always wear safety glasses when i look at art.
-
I stuck a pencil in my ear to tear my ear drum and now I constantly have this loud him in my ears that sort of sounds like a No Wave record...this is very advanced stuff...but I guess you peasants would rather "hear"...why am I always five years ahead of my time?

ha!...in all seriousness though, of course theres no problem with people choosing to protect their hearing. although i honestly believe that the need for ear protection is completely over stated by the safety industry. i?m fifty fucking five. i have never worn plugs. and have rarely listened to or played music at anything but max volume?but i also rarely listen for prolonged periods. i would much rather have no music on than music in the mid-background. when i listen to music at home things on shelves and windows rattle. in the car mirrors shake and you can feel it through the seats. up until around my mid 30?s i would regularly stand at the front at shows and put my head inside the bass bin of p.a. systems. i fucking loved it. i would definitely not advocate for anyone to follow my example on this or anything else though. i have a seven yr old that likes it loud too. its his choice, and i never put shit on when he?s around unless he specifically asks me to.
my hearing is fine. good enough for me anyway. i probably have a touch of tinnitus, like the faint sound of crickets in the distance all the time, but it honestly never bothers me. and in a noisey environment it can be hard to have a conversation because its a bit difficult to zone in on one noise above another. once again, can?t say that it bothers me. most people talk shit anyway. i just smile and nod.
the one thing i have never done and will never do is listen on headphones especially those bud ones. those fucking things will send you deaf in no time.

Yup, I'm 22 and I'm pretty sure using earbuds has fucked me for the long term. I still use them but tend to be really cautious about the volume level. Never higher than 80 percent volume (and even that is probably too loud)
Tinnitus can really suck if you fixate on it but as a lot of people have said, it gets to where you associate the ringing with the same tranquility of silence and then it's not so bad.
