Title: Easiest way to move records?
Post by: grievous angel on June 09, 2018, 07:16:12 AM
I haven't had to move in a few years, and I've accumulated a lot more records since then.  I'm moving at the end of the month, just a couple miles away, but moving my records feels like the most daunting part of it.  Anyone have any recommendations?  Any specific boxes that'll make it easier?  Thanks.

Spend some money on decent record boxes and buy a good dolly. I bought BCW boxes and a Milwaukee dolly for moving shit at record shows

I have all my crap in regular cardboard boxes I got from stores. Moving it around is just a matter of lifting a bunch of boxes. Very carefully. Or record boxes, like Ayotollah says.

I got about 5 or 6 of those plastic milk crates from target and just moved them over the course of a few trips.  Gave my back a break too

I just accept that it's an awful fact of life and try not to move often now that I collect again, and when I do, I just frown and bare it. No amount of planning or technique is going to make it "easy."

Many trips loading small boxes > fewer trips with big dense boxes, especially if stairs are involved. Never underestimate how supernaturally unpredictable the center of gravity of record boxes can and always will be

I'll stop by and keep the super rare shit at my place so it's safe. You take the rest. We'll figure it out next time you move or whatever, no big deal.

I've gone to Staples and bought 12"x12" boxes that are meant to store files. They're well-built, have decent handles and can do the job. Just make sure you're practicing good technique when lifting and setting the boxes down, as it is easy to hurt your back moving those suckers.

When we moved I immediately realized I would never be able to let anyone else handle my records, or at least not without monitoring them every inch/second of the way. Instead I moved all the records to the new house myself (which was a fucking lot at the time) a few boxes at a time in the days before/after the official 'moving day' when we had friends/family helping. It was well worth the piece of mind.

You would think something in the same shape as a wheel would be less of a pain in the ass but no. As said before 12" x 12" thick boxes taped up and a dolly is about as easy as it is going to get from my multiple moving experiences from failed relationships. ☻

I moved over 3,000 records across three states. It's no big deal. Keep Boodle, Boodle, Boodle in a separate box with all of the other $100+ records. Keep them in the cab of the truck (or have them ride shotgun in the car). Place all the rest in 12.5" boxes. Since you're only moving a few miles you don't need to worry about heat. None of my records were damaged during shipping. Yours won't be either.

I moved in April, only 15 blocks from my old pad, 48 boxes of LPs.  Used the Medium size box from U-Haul or comparable moving / packing center, which seemed specifically designed to hold 100ish LPs.  No issues.
Best advise I can give is to purge as you pack.  "Do I really wanna haul this Mick Ronson LP with me to the new pad?'  I sold 1500 LPs to a local shop in advance of my recent move.  I don't have a single regret about anything I ditched.
