MB014: Z Cars - This is Z Cars (Australia -1980)
Although they took their name from a cult English TV show, this group was Australian, formed in Melbourne by frontman Russell Street. Appearing in 1978, Z-CARS honed their set through countless gigs-- with bands as obscure as the Zorros and as renowned as the Saints-- before finally seeing wax with their 1980 single ‘This is Z-Cars’. An early offering from the esteemed Au Go Go label, the 45 was widely panned at the time, which the group themselves attribute to ‘possibly the worst guitar sound ever put on record’. To modern tastemakers, of course, such claims only increase the appeal, and ‘This is Z-Cars’ has since become a sought-after piece. Forty years later, the first-ever reissue of this rare classic is now set for early 2020 release on Mean Bean in a limited edition of 300 copies. If sterling early Australian power pop and punk a la Victims, Riptides and early Scientists grills your shrimp, you know what to do…Comes with bonus insert with archival photos/flyers and liner from Russel Street.
