Wylde Chykyn started during the Great Pandemic of 2020. Conceived as a group project, after about a month it became evident, as usual, that I would be on my own with this one. Easter Sunday the Mayor of Manitowoc passed a proclomation for all the churches to ring their bells, so I went with Amber at the appointed time, and we rang the bell together for 10 minutes.
I was sitting in my garage later that (yesterday) afternoon, and singing in my head, "It's Easter, It's Easter, Gonna Ring That Bell" and I was thinking about writing an album's worth of songs in a day, but that seemed like too much. I wrote down some ideas (Tire Inflator, Gotta Seed, Gotta Grow).
It was 4pm, and I had those four song titles, and a microphone. Step one was a scratch: guitar and drum machine. Throwing ideas around. Ended up with six song ideas, picked the best ones. I add bass and real drums, then I can delete the scratch tracks. Couple guitar tracks, couple tracks of vocals.
To fill out the album, I did new recordings of a bunch of my old songs, and some rev norb and THE ONIONS songs. Also a pair of instrumentals. I am happy to say, there's no covers, other than a rev norb song.
I finished tracking vocals this afternoon. Immediately began mixing and mastering. Finally, I grabbed the closest pair of sunglasses, pointed a lamp in my face, turned my camera sideways, and took exactly ONE photo, the album cover.
27 hours later I was uploading it to the internet.
