here's a few reviews for the VOLT record:
VOLT Man On The Ground 7" EP (Hozac)* 2006
The Volt machine keeps feeding back on this 4-song EP. I opine that there is a solo Lili Z 7" buried within this one as well, as her two credited tracks sound unnervingly similar to her Ss solo release, feedbacky creepout sessions of disturbing emotional obscurity. I'm conflicted. The whole EP is jawset-sure about referencing the mess of NDW/French Wave that has been enjoying a slowly surging renaissance over the last two or so years. I could say X track sounds like Y band from 1982, but that just shorts the present achievement of Volt, which is to reintegrate these sounds into a garage-punk framework. They threw me for a loop on this. I was expecting the dark-eyed synth-doom from their In The Red release would dominate future releases, but this thing is more like the Spash Four if they had existed 1978-81, their last "punk" record before the band went all 'Depeche Mode'. Weird(ly) punk. - Ryan Wells / The Z-gun.org
-------
I think I may have mentioned this before, but I'm growing weary of French weird-punk. Not that it's all bad, but I just don't flip over all things French as I used to. Yet, I can't help but sweat a little bit when a new Volt record arrives in the mail. Because for me, Volt are by far at the head of the class of this Glue Wave scene, as it appears to have been dubbed. I dig their dark and icy approach (with a touch of sex), and no one can serve this dish up colder and better than this trio. These four tracks are home recordings done with just Jack and Lili (but don't worry, FX is still in the fold), and they obviously aren't sounding as luxurious as their previous twelve-inch output. Reminiscent, of course, to Lili's solo stuff, the A-Side is particularly effective, a rougher and more grinding sounding pair of tunes, with mechanical synth and drums warmed up a bit by edged guitar. Lili just seethes like a mean girl should on "Not You". Not exactly demo-sounding material, but certainly showing off a more minimal bedroom-recording facet of a band I hold in high regard. Near industrial cold wave that is exactly what I think synth-punk should sound like these days. Scum stats: 100 on gold vinyl (78 with alternate cover, 22 with regular cover) and 400 on black. - Rich Kroneiss / Terminal-Boredom.com

I'm not against it. French punks gone synthy with Big Black's drum machine. "Couples" off their debut 12" is still the pinnacle of their output. Best taken in small doses as it can get shrill after awhile. Or maybe that's just this lo-fi recorded at home single? Best instrumentation is on "Our Little Waltz" but the lyrics are utter self-referential garbage about trying to write lyrics. Wait, something about "the emptiness of the song and the chords" You've got to be kidding me. The nihilists in "The Big Lebowski" would like this stuff. Step up your game froggies. - Ben Blackwell trembleunderboomlights.b logspot.com

Man! After two 12's, Paris's Volt turn out this little gem of a 7" and I think it is their best yet. Way rawer and more primitive that what you've heard from them before, this gets to the screaming roots of Parisian DIY rat fuckery. A great claustrophobic "I'm trapped in the bedroom" recorded sound makes it sound like Volt are standing next to you. Turn out the lights, Volt is knocking! Great! 400 pressed. - Scott Soriano / S-S Records

Another record of reductive, sexaholic lo-fi garage-electro headband from Paris's Volt. Four more songs here, with less presence than their previous 12"s but a freedom missing from their higher-fidelity efforts. Loose, goofy, recklessly fun noise, with the right kind of sense of humor (the one not obvious for its situation). Edition of 500, with 100 on clear. -Dustedmagazine.com

Le groupe parisien sort un EP sur le nouveau label Hozac de Chicago. 4 titres bien DIY enregistr..s dans leur salon. Deux p..pites de weird punk sombre et deux uppercuts de Lili Z. Vivement l'album qui devrait sortir sous peu sur In The Red. -doomsdaysky.free.fr/blog/
