The thing about girls is that they hide everything in that ditch they got.  How do they fit everything in there?  It's uncanny!

I think girls just don't approach music the same way as guys.  They'll like a song or a band or whatever but it doesn't make them want to hear more similar bands, investigate the reference points, etc.  I know a few girls who are exactly like guys in their approach to music but they're the exception.  Thats why, on the most part, decent shows = sausage party.

Yeah, but you're a weirdo.  Or that is to say, you're neurotic and obsessive in ways different than most women are neurotic & obsessive; you're modern. You've probably even gone through a scenario similiar to what I outlined above, albeit with the genders reversed.

I don't mean to start an internet pissing war- and maybe you guys are friends and I'm just butting in here - but I wouldn't a appreciate a stranger calling me "neurotic and obsessive" based solely on my status as a music fan. How is being a girl interested in music "modern?" For over a hundred years "modern" has been an overused catch-all meant to denote any deviance from the norm found desirable by the speaker. Women have been passionate fans of music even longer than that.

Backed. Poorly worded (it sounds really patronizing) but backed. Most dudes into punk rock are obsessive losers whose record collections took the place of their baseball cards and GI Joe's (Pokemon and Magic for the younger bucks?) and generally hang out with the same kind of losers who have since developed drinking problems.

Also, if you talk to anyone from the fairer sex that qualifies as "an exception," they'll pretty much tell you the same thing.

i dunno what my response to this thread is.  there are dorky girls and dorky boys.  i dunno...most the people i hang out with go to shows probably because that's the only time i usually leave my house unless i'm going to work.  i definitely think it's a little naive to think that girls don't like checking out "similar bands, investigate reference points".  i was just having a phone conversation last night with a friend and i was telling him about how i can't really date/hang out with a guy who's not into punk or rock & roll because i've realized that i'm too much of a nerd about it and they honestly can't handle it.

the assumptions about women & music that get thrown around this board are so idiotic. i know they are based on guys' personal observations and frustration with their town's shrinking mating pool but the conclussions are so skewed by geography, demographics, style of music, etc. that it is stupid to make any generalizations about such things. And god forbid a woman chime in to counter what you have already decided is so: they are told their opinion doesnt count, that they dont know what they are talking about, that they are a freak. I'd say no wonder why women stay away from the music scene, if not for the fact that since I've been going to shows (the late 70s), the mix of women and men at most rock shows have been pretty much equal. Yes, I'd see more men at Slayer shows. But I'd see more women at a Modest Mouse show. On a standard rock & roll show in Sacramento or SF, the mix is 50/50 and it has been that since I can remember. I see more men in bands, that is true but that is different than attending shows. And so a woman does not collect at the same rate as her male counterpart, but is that really the gauge of how much she is into music? So she doesnt go to every show? Is that really a measure? No, there are far too many things to consider other than hording behavior and social activity. This "oh where are thou chicks!" train of thought isnt annoying because it is sexist or biggoted or anything, but because it is so fucking shallow and moronic and the conclusion - chicks just aint into music like guys are - is unfathomably stupid.

Clint,

Stop PLAYING armchair sociologist/psychologist. You're not GOOD at it. It's what got you in TROUBLE last time you posted on forums on a REGULAR basis. Just talk WITH people like a NORMAL person RATHER than whipping up these ELABORATE pseudo-sociological manifestos to DEFINE them. Everyone can RELATE to getting dumped, but your sweeping GENERALIZATIONS do nothing but alienate the very girls whose lack of attendance at shows you are lamenting.

Also, for the love of PETE, please cut the cap LOCKS key off of your keyboard.

hahahahahahahah
Title: Re: Chicks & Shows....
Post by: SSR on August 20, 2007, 12:42:08 PM

Nope, it's not unfathomly stupid, it's accurate.  You even contradict yourself within the space of the post when you at first say the "shows you go to" are roughly 50/50 male female, but THEN, later you admit that women in general don't go to as many shows as guys do:"So she doesnt go to every show? Is that really a measure?"

YES, things like number of shows attended and records purchased/listened to are THE way to measure how much of a music fan someone is.

And you talk about demographics being skewed and people not being able to see beyond that, well sir, that applies to YOU more directly than anyone else.  You live in an area with a super high percentage of lesbians; i.e.women who generally have no trouble competing in fields that are classically male dominated.  And the fact that there are so many strong, leading type women just serves to influence the rest of the female populous to do the same.   Everybody else doesn't have that.  We still have a whole fuck of a lotta victimized, submissive women.... It sucks

And when and where exactly are we/I telling women that their opinion doesn't count anymore than we do with guys?  I mean, I'm probably telling YOU right now that your opnion doesn't count, and I'm doing a pretty good job of it, but HEY, that's what guys do, we fight and compete for influence or control or WHATEVER

You've got to learn to avoid cliches, most generalizations are usually applicable, ya know, because that's how people generally act, but it is of the utmost importance that you are able to identify a situation that falls outside those strictures.   I mean, Jesus-fucking-Christ, I've been giving myself shit lately, because over the last few years, I've realized that I've lost more and more ability to be friends with straight guys(too much competition).  Increasingly, my friends are just women, gay guys and the odd smattering of lesbians(no bi's though, they suck... heh heh)

Since when does ""So she doesnt go to every show? Is that really a measure?"" mean "women do not go to the same amount of shows as men"? Really need to learn how to read.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didnt you say that April's opinion doesnt count because she is a music freak?

"You've got to learn to avoid cliches, most generalizations are usually applicable, ya know, because that's how people generally act, but it is of the utmost importance that you are able to identify a situation that falls outside those strictures. "

Great, now apply it to yourself.

I'm not against psychology Clint. Go through years of schooling to become a licensed psychologist  - ie ungergo formal training and prove that you understand and can apply what you are reading - and then I'll regard you as one. Or show a single ounce of analytical sagacity - or rudimentary rhetorical ability for that matter -  just once in your life and I'll take what you have to say seriously. Learning to emphasize a point without using all caps would be a huge step forward for you. Your verbal skills haven't progressed in over five years despite "reading all the time."

second....last year at gonerfest there was a female from clint's state that attended gonerfest.  she never introduced her self to me, but apparently observed the fact that i enjoyed the bands and like to go up front and dance.  her response was to go back to wi and talk shit and call me a "star fucker".  maybe that's why girls in your state don't go to shows....up there they talk shit and think that you're only there to fuck the boys in bands if you don't act lame and hang out in the back.

You've gotta be fucking kidding me, Clint.  There are just about as many girls around here that are obsessive music fans as there are guys, and I think I go to just as many shows as you do despite the fact that I can't even get into half of them because they're in bars.  I'm nearly always in the front row enjoying myself for the music, not in back being some sort of scenester douchebag bitchface.

And plenty of girls have been put in the situation where they've had to choose between going to shows and hanging out with significant others.  That isn't a guy problem in relationships; that's a person who goes to shows' problem in relationships.

My girlfriend absolutely hates going to shows and despises 99% of what I listen to but I've had a little progress as of late, turned her onto M.O.T.O. (she thought it was They Might Be Giants, yeah I know, shut up), and some old powerpop stuff.  But when it comes to going to shows, who cares? Sure, it would be amazing if she was as crazed about music as I was, but I've accepted that that's just not gonna happen. I go with my friends or just go alone since most of them like shitty crust and d-beat.  It's sad that some people on here would sever a relationship based soley on different music tastes.  She puts up with my obsessive record collecting and I put up with her obsessive collecting of Hello Kitty and Safora (Saphora?) makeup.  It's give and take people.  I think this has degenerated into shear jealously over the penis to vagina ratio...

i think not dating someone specifically because of what they listen to is stupid.  you can have PLENTY in common and not have identlical interests, if anything it makes it more interesting.  the yin and yang people, it's what makes life whole.  and thank goddess for that.

yeah, yeah...but, Officer Brad, you have pretty diverse music tastes so that leaves a lot of options. my girlfriend like indie pop, some 60s stuff, nick drake, that kind of stuff. all of it doesnt mesh with my tastes, but that is fine. there is enough stuff that we are both into that makes it cool. we go see music together from time to time and sometimes we dont go together. that is fine. i love here dearly but i dont want to be around her 25/7 and she doesnt want me around that much. anyways, music is just one fraction of our lives together. it is much more important to me that we can sit in the same room for long stretches and not have to fill the air with talk. or that i feel she has my back always. that we can travel together and have a blast. that we can make fun out of shitty situations. that our sense of humor meshes.  that said, if she was a kenny chesney or cheryl crow fan, it wouldnt work...but that has less to do with music and more to do with the fact that i dont date retarded people.

I can never go out with big film freaks. Mainly cos I hate having to keep still or quiet while a film's on. And trying to read subtitles while drinking is a real pain in the ass. I did watch Frankenhooker with my girlfriend the other night but we were playing singles and drinking and shouting the whole way through it.

First, I find it hard pressed to even find dudes who go to/ have gone to as many shows as me and some of my girlfriends. In general, we are thick as thieves. Sure you are gonna have a few scuffles along the way cos' so and so fucked so and so's ex etc. but in what circles doesn't that happen? As far as shows it depends on the kind of music your talking about, but in general I think there's more girls out than ever now, and I grew up in the female minority of punk, hardcore and garage shows. The mother lode was that power pop fest. Man, that place was littered with strange wool probably the most I've seen in a long time. I have found though that even girls I meet outside of music like through work etc. just need a mixed cd or two and they end up coming out, checking out bands, and dj nights. It's just getting the right folks exposed to the good shit....

i try NOT to do this, but i find that it usually becomes a problem as time goes on. with my ex, he was very receptive to bands i would introduce him to and almost always ended up liking them. but when it came down to the things he was into, 50% was decent and 50% was just embarassing. this can lead to some embarassing situations (like when he wanted to help me dj..i wont even get into the things i told him he could not/should not play). so then it turns into me getting embarassed/annoyed, him getting offended, both of us feeling shitty...

on the rare occasion that i was in a relationship with someone who actually liked the things i did musically and knew what i was talking about (and could turn ME onto new things, instead of just me doing it all the time), i found that i was much happier. not saying this is the case for everyone, obviously.

but then again, i don't dispute the fact that i'm a nerd in this respect.

i cant even imagine being with somebody who doesnt like the same music as me.  the only way that would work is if they didnt like music at all because i am sure as hell not gonna listen to music i dont like half the time.

Bingo!!  That's pretty much my situation but not exactly.  She likes music, it just isn't a passion.  She likes (old) Madonna, Cindi Lauper, Siouxsie, Cure, Depeche Mode, Postal Service, Modest Mouse, etc.  Stuff I'm not crazy about (except Siouxsie).  I love playing her obscure (to her at least) records that I think she'll like, but most of the time I get the "meh" response.  But she loves me for me geekiness so it all balances out.

To all the girls on here:

Are most of your female friends all into the same stuff as you, as far as being obsessed with records, finding new bands, going to shows, etc.??

Because in my personal experience my group of friends (the "punk" ones) have consisted almost exclusively of guys with a few token girls who are just as nerdy as us but somehow the girls never get along?  Go figure.

It's just getting the right folks exposed to the good shit....

yeah you guys are lucky....there seem to be alot of cool girls in san francisco/oakland!!

my best friend/ex is a hardcore obsessive nut, she doesnt however play nicely with other girls, kinda treats them badly and is really sexist/shallow in her views on them. Always says their only into it for fashion etc and slates them for being intrested in anything girly at all eg:makeup, clothes etc.

Shes great an all, just sometimes makes me a little depressed, ive got a lot of female friends who are into it a lot, sometimes as much as guys, sometimes more, all my girl friends want to go to shows and its how i usually go to them to be honest kinda as a chaparone or whatever. I've started to enjoy shows less and less these days, too many pricks.

In my experience and what I have observed is that women are much less pushy about turning people on to music. There is also no hidden agenda, like trying to get laid, when someone like dulcinea gives one of her girls a cdr. I also know that women are very open to being turned on to music, as much as anyone else. So I am guessing that women respond to women much more positively than they do to men in this respect.

And yeah being in San Francisco probably helps a lot. sorry, but idiotic assumptions like chicks just aint into music dont fly here. go to a show and the evidence is quite to the contrary.

You gotta be kidding me, people!  I'd say at least 80% of the girls I've dated (or etc.) don't give a good goddamn about any of the bands I like, and it's never bothered me at all.  My thing doesn't have to be hers.  It's nice when we have music in common, but on the whole, I don't care.  So long as she's not cramming any of her garbage down my throat, I leave her out of mine, and we're OK.

My experience has been that most girls I've "known" who like the same bands I do like them for entirely different reasons -- largely different reasons -- so it doesn't matter to me anyway.

It's funny to me when a guy's so easily impressed because a girl knows of or likes Band XYZ.  How does that make her more attractive?  In the long run, I'm far more attracted to a girl who is independent, smart, funny and devotes very little of her time to any kind of dumb herd, music-tard or otherwise.  I don't give a fuck if she knows who Ed Kuepper is.  Doubleplus points if she hasn't fucked every single guy I know in every band who's ever had a lame 7" circle the block.  Unless she can introduce me, oooooh!

Yes to Dr. Lastname.

I've had long-term relationships with girls in bands/record collectors AND girls who don't give a fuck (the standard Neil Young/Nick Drake/Tim Buckley/Kinks/indie etc.) and it totally does not matter at all.

If something really great/really awful happens to you or your signifigant other, dos it matter if the have the Rip Offs LP? Fuck no.

If you don't have brains or a sense of humor you ain't worth a damn, I've met loads of people into good music who were scarily intelligent and the same, if not more, who must share DNA with a wombat.

I'd rather be with someone who deosn't mind spending the day at the Met who finds Kids in the Hall hilarious then some dweebette who was at the 1st Black Lips show in NYC.

Yawn.

I'm trying to figure out who the hell this girl is that Clint is talking about--I have no idea right now and it's annoying the shit out of me.

Music will always be better than girls.  Until it's not.

Amen.  I've realized that as much as I'm into myself and all that I enjoy, it'd be a drag to date someone just like me.  I just wanna find a girl who's smart, fun to be around, will go to an occasional show, but most importantly, be open and intererested in things.  That's the key.  It doesn't have to be the kind of music I like.  Just be interested and involved in life.  Otherwise, it's a slow burn.

Gotta add an addendum though, now that I live in SF.  No burning man bullshit.  Seriously.

I only date girls whose first names begin with a letter between T and X, are born of an aboriginal father and a mother descended from Lithuanian royalty, can recite every episode of "Walker Texas Ranger" by heart,  listen to nothing but the Bill Black Combo (but nothing after 1960, natch), eats cheezits on toast for breakfast, thinks the Brady Bunch contains secret messages from the Simbionyese Liberation Army, and who is into figure skating with me while dressed up like Sloth and Chunk from the Goonies. If she can't bellow, "Sloth love Chunk" into my ear in a voice that sounds exactly like Sloth's, it's a total deal-breaker.

A person needs to have standards.

Worst case scenario: Took a nice-looking lady back to my place for some etc. after a few drinks, we get into the bedroom, start tossing clothes off, and I sez, I sez: "Hey, pick a record you wanna listen to."  She starts slicing off some Bowie.  Good god, good god.

Best case scenario: Same situation: Took a nice-looking lady back to my place for some etc. after a few drinks, we get into the bedroom, start tossing clothes off, and the record line comes out and she sez: "Fuck your records.  Did you take me home because of my dress?"  I said, "No."  "Yeah?"  "Yeah."  "Then why?"  "It was your face.  You got a good one."  She smiled and jumped me and grabbed my bare arm and went to town.  That was fun.  There was no music at all.

I've gotten to the point where I almost prefer to date girls who have nothing to do with "the scene."  In fact, when I tried to stay within those confines, I wasn't getting any second glances, much less any action.  Ya see, I'm a nice guy.  Girls like my entertaining stories.  They like me bein' around making 'em laugh, but when it comes to stepping it up a notch, no dice.

So now I'm in a long term relationship with a girl that I met at school.  There was no music involved in our initial meeting.  No talk of it whatsoever.  Her taste is beyond my comprehension.  One day she'll be buying a powerviolence CD and the next day I get into her car and she's listening to La Bouche.  The worst was when we went on a date pretty early on, she drove.  The only CD in her car was my band's demo.  D'oh!

Hey what about that story that was going around about multiple dudes on this board dating the same record hoarding girl?  That didn't sound like fun.  I dated and lived with a girl with a sizable record collection at one point.  I couldn't deal with it.  I'd be in my room relaxing and then she'd be listening to records that I couldn't stand over and over again.  I'd rather date a girl who listens to bad music that I have no interest in than someone who listens to similar but crappy bands.

Milwaukee does have a lot of girls within the scene.  It's cool that it's not like a 10 to 1 ratio here.  More like a 4 or 5 to 1.  Girls within the scene are up for more scrutiny than guys.  If there's a bunch of girls who go to shows and hang out and that's it, people notice.  But when guys do the same no one really notices.

Oh yeah, I noticed earlier on that someone seemed to not be comfortable dating a person who didn't drink.  I've never understood that.  Of course I know the answer..."Well, you don't drink, so you couldn't possibly understand."  I'd think that girls would like having a sober guy around.  You can get super wasted and always have a ride home.  They can make sure you don't choke on your puke in you sleep.  All that great stuff.

Milwaukee has a scene? And ratios? I didn't get that memo, but I'll tell you this, I gotta take some test that to show the Plumbers Union that I'm smart tommorrow, yet here I am up late drinking beer.  After the test, I go up north by myself for 4 or 5 days and go fishing and write cliched northwoods laments/songs.  I already got a woman and I don't care if chicks go to shows anymore. I'm old, tired and well worn, but at least I can get laid pretty much anytime I want!  I had sex with my fiancee' today, in fact.  In a shower. In the town of Mishicot, near where Steven Avery murdered Theresa Halbach! The horror! I'm going to regret writing this in the morning. I'm going to regret staying up late, when I gotta testing battery ahead of me in the morning! Aaaggggh!

Essentially, Clint needs to get laid and shouldn't worry if some chick likes to go to shows or not.  That should be the least of his problems.

Sorry Clint Beastwood.

i passed very rapidly thru the last couple pages on this cuz it was getting boring.

all i can say - is - lastname is killing it with his words - listen to him.....

this whole "oh my woman demands i choose between shows and her" is old , as something real old, soriano maybe, i dunno.  could be a jock bitching bout how he cant watch sunday football w/ his buddies.....you work that shit out, unless shes a real raging cunt, in that case ya leave hr behind.

sounds like the initial case was a guy hanging out with a girl exclusively at shows - then she doesnt want to go the shows.  well i dunno?

never seen any lack of ladies in cle or chicago at shows - and cle aint the most hoppin place.  and theres obviously plenty of ladies here on the board - who knows how many more girls (and guys) lurk cuz they got nothin to say, or are in fear of gettin raged on (recent example - that japcore thing!?  not judgin, but thats silly)

i can and cannot understand this whole "cant date a partner w/o my taste in music" shit.  i cant think of ONE person, let alone a GIRL (haha what a rare species) who shares my exact musical taste.  i got more interests than music, as i hope/know most people here do - shit....if that wasnt the case, i guess we'd just post a face pic along w/ top 10 rec list and look for our closest match.  or would the face pic even be needed?

anyhow.....nuff semi-logical shit, off to the drunk thread with eric!

To those girls I guess I pissed off at the start of this thread, sorry, I see how what I wrote comes off patronizing and I'm sure many of you are more knowledgeable than me etc  but I still think that girls who post on message boards, go to lots of shows, collect record are more the exception than the rule.   I think there's a certain obsessiveness you're more likely to find in guys than girls when it comes to sports/ video games/ movies/ music/ trains/ ships-in-a-bottle/etc /etc /

goddamn it....im drunker and not feeling nice......i got fucking five teeth in my head

made out with around five girls at shows in the past three months.  and i have some advice

stop fucking whining.  women dont get turned on by dudes whining on message boards.

if your woman dont wanna go with ya to a show, say "Alright fine", come home with another girl.  she'll go next time

also hilarious how much pseudo-psych words are in your posts, lots of big words, yet women are always referred to as "chicks".   a psychologist, or a psych 101 student could run wild w/ that.

I'd rather be with someone who deosn't mind spending the day at the Met who finds Kids in the Hall hilarious then some dweebette who was at the 1st Black Lips show in NYC.

what's the difference between the two? you still want someone you can relate to on some cultural level! Whether it's The Jerk or The Rip Offs it's still a requisite!

That "minimal pizza" comment was fucking ACE!

I was hanging out with ex-b'lip jack and his wife julie last week. we went to my place and she was buggin' out over the necessary evils and started geeking about how when "buzzsaw" came out it fucked her brain so hard that there was no way she could ever look back. you think jack doen'st love this about her? when i met christine she had a n'evils poster on her wall. i knew she could understand my excitemnet about them and this pleased me. excuse us dudes for wanting a girl that can relate to the things we really care about! btw, christine is the movie geek of us two. w/o her i wouldn't ever see any great movies, so she really takes care of me in that dept. so while she has alot to offer me culturaly, i also don't send her out of the room when 'spider fingers' comes on.

Go figure.

It's just getting the right folks exposed to the good shit....

yeah you guys are lucky....there seem to be alot of cool girls in san francisco/oakland!!

...and that's why you gotta come live out here, April!

In the bay area, there are almost always more girls up front at shows than guys. I just got my head smacked into the drumset and ended up with 8 stitches, but I'm still going up to the front. (OK, so maybe I'm an idiot) And you see girls hovering over the merch table like a fucking vulture looking for the tour-only-7" or whatever. Yeah, the girls here are total geeks. Oh, and I don't wanna hear about this "bay area=more lesbians=more girls at shows in the bay area" BS I read a few pages back cuz most lesbians aren't even into the kind of music a lot of us on this board are into.

I really like the bay area r n r scene where boys don't have stupid elitist attitudes toward girls. It's fun and that's how it should be.

"all of the above" rules! And so does The Jerk!

I've dated people with all lifestyles/different tastes in music (a straight edge dude, even), and it's never been a problem. I think that base is covered as long as he is passionate about some kind of art/culture/music thing and has a dark/dry/retarded sense of humour. Those are important values to me, because otherwise, he won't understand or relate to how much time and money I spend doing my own thing(s). And for many people, going to shows is not a measure of how much they are into music. Maybe they just don't like bars or drinking or really loud volumes. Maybe they are just like Keeth Vee and are old and crotchety and scared of falling and breaking their hips.

Not that any of this matters to me! I love going to/setting up shows and listening to records and so do many of my girlfriends (I have a lot of those, too... cool and hot and smart and funny ones!) and I have a future hubby that likes most of the same things as me now, anyways.

Aya, how did you get knocked into a drumkit standing in the front row? Was it from someone behind you or did the kit somehow get thrown into you? However it happened, that's really shitty!

I've dated girls into some of the music I was into, as well as girls into j-pop and "whatever is on the radio." I broke up with all of them for reasons other than musical taste. Intellect - or at least a curiosity that goes beyond the surface level of life - is far more of a necessity for me than taste. I dated a girl who was simple-minded, self-centered, dim-witted, had a poor vocabulary, didn't appreciate literature or art, and who liked punk rock. That last attribute didn't come close to making up for the others.

Rear Ranger -

I was still reading Termbo every couple days, so luckily I didn't notice that problem too much.

April -

Hey, whatever floats your boat is fine! If it works for you, go for it. I just mean that I personally would never, under any circumstances, date a girl who didn't Termbo. After all, what if I was dating a girl who couldn't understand my love of Termbo, and she called my up one day and said,

"What are you doing tonight Steve, wanna watch a movie together, barely talk, then have emotionless sex?"

"Aw, I would like to honey, but I already have plans to answer my takes on Termbo tonight, plus I've got a flame war with Soriano going on I've got to keep up on."

"That's it Steve, it's either Termbo or me, you can only love one!!!!!"

I mean, how could I ever enter into a relationship knowing that was going to be the outcome?

I don't snipe out record collectors. Music just happens to be something I've always been into and it's fun for me to be with someone who likes good music. Also everyone I've been with weren't necessarily into the same kind of music, and had other interests besides music that made them attractive. not to mention them being good human beings...to me, that's the most important thing.

Respect the cock. You are embedding this thought. I am the one who's in charge. I am the one who says yes! No! Now! Here! Because it's universal, man. It is evolutional. It is anthropological. Here's what I know about Chicks and Shows...
If you're a girl that goes to shows getting laid is like shooting fish in a barrel... tough titties boys... us girls are getting it on while you're whining on TermBo.
We Win. The End.

The simple fact of the matter is that dudes in bands are hotter than dudes that aren't in bands.  It's a fact.

It seems like this an an appropriate thread to post this link in:

http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/10/the-science-of-insulting-women/

Yeah, I've accidently been doing that for years.  Of course, most of my insults are more just harmless, loving insults, i.e."You know me so well and you know I care about you, so you know I don't mean it."

It's the (not so)new, more complicated way of being passive aggressive.

Has anyone seen that show "The Pickup Artist" mentioned in the article?  Any girl who would fuck that guy should have the Taliban throw hydrocloric acid in their face or be gangraped by a pack of wolves, your choice.

i dunno what my response to this thread is.  there are dorky girls and dorky boys.  i dunno...most the people i hang out with go to shows probably because that's the only time i usually leave my house unless i'm going to work.  i definitely think it's a little naive to think that girls don't like checking out "similar bands, investigate reference points".  i was just having a phone conversation last night with a friend and i was telling him about how i can't really date/hang out with a guy who's not into punk or rock & roll because i've realized that i'm too much of a nerd about it and they honestly can't handle it.

I figured that out a long time ago.  I can barely have friends who aren't music nerds.

Most of my friends aren't that into music or going out or even good movies. Last week I had this convo... him:"hey what did you rent?" me:"Hot Fuzz, it should be fun!" him:"never heard of it".

The consensus seems to be that going to shows, etc. are activities that must end once you become a proper adult.

Go figure.

Most (if not all) of my female friends go to as many (or more) shows as I do.
They also buy tons of records, DJ, and generally party just as hard as the men that I know.
(Oh.. and a good chunk of them either lurk or post here or on other boards.)

why because folks love to talk about relationships, and the ones between boys and girls are endless.

I have always found it funny that serious rn'r boys dated girls who had no clue about music. I see and understand why. This might be wildly unpopular, but it seems tougher for girls into music to date a dude who doesn't know shit about it. Sure there are a million other interests to connect on, but I have to say every serious "I'm in L.U.V." relationship that I've been in has revolved around an awesome soundtrack.

Not pig fuckers. Pig eaters. We like carnitas, BBQ pork shoulders, bacon, chops, etc. You can grill it, fry it, roast it, eat it anyway you like it. Pig is so easy to cook with.
I don't recommend eating it raw though. You gotta cook it first so you don't get sick.

Wasn't this thread embarrassing enough to us dudes the first time around....sheesh!

After having just taken the XYX tour on a ride around California where the average show was about equal and female-to-male ratio (and after seeing nearly every local show by the Ganglians at which crowds were sometimes 4-5 rows deep of just girls dancing enthusiastically), I've gotta say that the shows with higher F-to-M ratios were probably overall better. (The main exception being anytime the Mayyors play.)

Even looking at the KDVS staff right now, we've had a lot more female participation than at any time I've been there, including during the heyday of riot grrl. And several of these ladies are really deep into music in terms of learning as much as possible about unfamiliar bands, learning the history, asserting their opinion about it, seeing live shows, setting up live shows, releasing it on their own record labels, and starting bands. Sure, I know that Davis is a bubble city, but even Sacramento has seen this sorta thing take off.

Because dudes like to control the stereo. If you date a dude with crappy taste in music, you're going to get stuck listening to a lot of shit. I'd rather just make it easy on myself and date people with good taste.

The thing about girls is that they hide everything in that ditch they got.  How do they fit everything in there?  It's uncanny!

Okay, when I was in high school I heard a rumor about this local anchor lady, about how she had to go to the hospital because she had a beer bottle stuck in her vagina. The doctors apparently had to drill a hole in the bottle to let air into her cunt-vacuum so's they could pry the bottle loose. I don't think I believed the story, but I thought it was so great I kept repeating it throughout the years as though it were true, hoping it'd spread.

More stories, please.

As for people that think that nowadays the M to F ratio is 50/50 at shows, it must be fun to live in such a dream world.  Hopefully you do not find gainful employment in any field that requires rigor.

Tonnes of girls at shows here.  Probably near 50/50 at real-deal hardcore and Termbo-style "garage" gigs, better yet at more trad garage shows.  I don't go to dumbo moshcore shows or hip Termbo weirdpunk shows, but imagine that they'd bookend that in terms of gender ratio.

I guess Sacto is a dreamworld (although last night it was about 10-2 M to F). My job can be pretty exhausting sometimes.

I like how this thread elicits responses from all the female termbo posters, which in turn makes it look like there's a heavier lady-presence, when in reality, there's what, like half a dozen gals who have more than 800 posts under their belt(wasn't that the old magic number to be considered a credible poster)?

"Nice legs, babe. But lemme see that post count."

Whatever. people burn out. plain and simple. There's always an influx of new people. That's how it is. Most of the thirty somethings I know don't go to shows that often....there's always the lifers...people that put on shows, put out records,etc.. I think about the punks I grew up with a lot of them I don't ever see. It takes some reunion show to drag em out of the wood work. Anyways my good friend is a broad, over thirty and will still road trip for a show, hell she flew over seas(by herself)to see Hell Fest in France. While a lot of the dudes I know just bitch about no good shows but won't go and check out any new bands.

Whatever. people burn out. plain and simple. There's always an influx of new people. That's how it is.

The list is thousands long
People who decided it wasn't for them
Did they really make that decision?
Conditioning runs deep in the U.S.A.
Teenage rebellion is just fine as long as you stop once you turn eighteen
Thousands of punks turned to society's tools
There is something in their eyes
You can tell they sold out
Remember punk is more than teenage rebellion
Sure it starts there. But why does it end?
And the list is thousands long
What other life is there besides a life of freedom?
Never give in
Never give up
When boredom sets in
Think of the young kids who we once were
That enthusiasm is still there
You look around
What do you see?
One to replace every five that leave
And the list is millions long
But, lately I see an upsurgency
Back to old values of dedication and fuking rebellion
Perhaps the list is only hundreds long.

.. and play in tons of bands.

Seems like half the (bar) shows I go to these days are filled folks who are in their 30s (and older) Guess it depends on what part of the country you're in (and what shows you go to)

Bay Area: filled with lifers.

RE:Being a Lifer

Here's a picture somebody just put up on Facebook two weeks ago of a show from 1997 in which you can see me in the background.  I'm behind the guy in the blue shirt.  The band was horrible, and my only recourse is to state that based on my body position, it looks like I'm about to leave, maybe.

Sounds like that chick is lame. Get over it and find a new one.

Wait a minute, Steve's pairing of those two obviously implies that both groups opinions are not so valid.  There-fore, Steve is saying that the opinions of the smattering of female posters on Termbo don't matter.  Which means that he is as guilty of misogyny as anyone.  I bet that type of thinking gets him laid a lot!

Whenever bands tour through town they always make some comment about how great the guy to girl ratio is in Miami, even when I don't think it's particularly impressive. The idea of shows without girls seems weird to me. If there's no girls, why would guys bother to show up?
Typical V man right here, but I have to agree. Also, I think those touring bands just get surprised because people here hang out with girls/have girlfriends on the reg.

Also to be noted, the example-lady used in thee very first post of this thread recently "cycled back in" and in the last three months or so, is suddenly going to an ass-ton of shows again.  It had been a multi-year absence but now she cheerfully "like"'s announcements of Terrible Twos shows & whatnot.  It it her just making the rounds again, or is it a symptom of something else, like say, the decreasing social options one is presented with as they age?   Will it last?

Additionally, her being "back" also probably has something to do with the fact that her old high school beau's mother just died(that beau being someone who is quite the champion show goer), and the example-lady, as someone who has lost both her parents,  identifies with that greatly.  Ya know, so they reconnected over that & it "naturally" led to her going to more shows again.

Who knows?(yeah yeah, I know I'm inviting a "who cares?" reply here, but whatever)

Dude, seriously...just stop talking.

Women are useless.
My band has a bigger fanbase of women than men, men are useless. And ugly as fuck.
