Title: Name Brand Guitars
Post by: Vince Clortho Keymaster of Gozac on February 20, 2008, 09:17:12 AM
Here is a picture of me playing a NAME BRAND GUITAR in Paris, France. The VINTAGE Fender Twin you see behind me blew up later that night and once belonged to Kind Congo Powers and was his European tour amp in the Cramps.

This is a thread to discuss your expensive "name brand guitar" stories.

It's for America. By Americans. Like Chevy.
I bought it on the corner of 14th street and 6th ave in Manhattan and can procure you one for
$2 ppd. No need to start a new thread. Although it is generic Flag andnot name brand.

Here is a picture of me and Eric Lastname playing NAME BRAND Ibanez guitars at the Horizontal Action Blackout Festival:

None of my guitars worked properly so I'd have to borrow them off whatever main band were playing. Thus, I played BRAND NAME guitars almost every night! I go for shape rather than such concepts as 'tone'.
I use a STAGG (inserts fingers in corner of eyes) Chinese guitar. It has superior shape, much better than American guitar played by lady-men like Eddie Van Halen and Micheal Schenker

Mines the one on the left. I had the one on the right but swapped it as it was cracked.

I have a Jay Turser telecaster copy. I got it for free. I borrowed it off a bandmate for a tour and when he saw the condition it was in when we finished the tour (it was completely covered in my blood, the nut on the headstock was busted off on both sides so the strings would fall out of place and the nut that holds the input in place was missing) he said "uhh.... yeah, why don't you just keep it."

Before that I was playing another Jay Turser. I got that off another bandmate. He didn't say I could keep it, but he told me to hold on to it until I got it fixed. It's sitting in my parents basement right now.

Before that I had a no name guitar that I literally dug out of the trash. It had one of those metal looking headstocks and it was originally white I'm assuming, but it was kind of a creamy piss yellow by the time I found it. I hated that guitar because it sounded like total shit.

That's as far back as I remember as far as my guitars are concerned.

In the Electric Shadows I played a NAME BRAND Fender American Standard Jazz Bass that I borrowed off a friend who is an ex-member of Shelter and current member of H2O.

To honor Ray Cappo's legacy and the bass's sordid past I ate a lot of cheeseburgers and drank a lot before gigs.

Punk cred.

NAME BRAND FENDER NASHVILLE TELECASTER (MEXICAN "DELUXE" MODEL):
Not pictured: NAME BRAND MARSHALL JCM 900 COMBO AMP

At probably our worst gig ever (not pictured) I broke two strings on the first song and then the top bit of the nut that holds the low E string on fell off. Both strap pegs have fallen out many a time, and once in the middle of a big London gig. Overall pretty beat up and probably not worth nearly as much as what I paid for it.

I made up for that by scoring one of these for about a quarter of what it's worth though:

If you're a Gaunt fan, ask Nick to burn you a CD of all the outakes he has.  He's also got some TJSA demos for one of the later albums which are interesting (to me at least).

YAUGHT is apparantly a now obsolete way of spelling yacht.

And if you disagree you're gonna have to argue with google.com and the fouding members of the Blue Marlin YAUGHT club.

one time a dude was sellin a white jazzmaster on ebay.  the only picture he posted looked like it was taken on a fuckin camera phone that had been run over by a car and used to wipe fuckin joey chestnut's asshole on the 5th of july.  his reserve was 300 bucks.  nobody bid on it except me.  i figured even if it was fucked i could fix it.  i won it and it came and it was perfect. one time a friend of mine inherited a 73 SG from his dead uncle.  another friend of mine borrowed it so we could start a band.  6 months later he dropped it and snapped the fuckin headstock off.  we took it to the wood shop at school and the teacher helped us glue it back on.  we gave it back and to this day the kid has no clue.  i played a harmony bobkat for a while but it was too fuckin small i dont get why they did that shit.  for kids or something? ive had this mexican strat since 1998 and its the best guitar ive ever owned.  things are fuckin indestructible.  kinda like mexicans in general.  way better than the americans.  i had one of those and it totally fell apart.  id like to press her play button.

I was at Eric's one night and some crack heads came into the party and stole my friends cell phone.  They came back later asking us if we knew where the phone's charger was.  When confronted about stealing the phone they gave Trace the  option of handing over $7 for the phone, or getting shot.  Trace was out $7

You'd think a crackhead would have sold the gun for some rocks.
Or would at least use the gun better.
"Give me all of your money and everything in this house of value I can easily carry on my person or I will shoot you to death," is way more profitable than, "give me seven bucks or I'll shoot you."
I would have called his bluff.
Actually, you just should have killed the crackhead and put him on a stake in front of your place as a lesson to all other crack heads.
You could hang a little sign on him that just reads "YOU!"

This post is off-topic...

I had a Gretsch replica guitar that was really pretty, but the brand was Lyle. Some people were so hung up on "WTF kinda brand is Lyle?!?!" Others still gave me compliments. I liked it. I was bummed as hell to find that the crazy-forehead-for-miles chick from Blanks '77 hit it on its side causing the body to split in half. My roommate was having them over, and he was such a devout fan that he thought it should be an honor to have one's guitar broken by a member of Blanks '77. They also left a big U-Haul turtle shell thing in our backyard that he was so proud of. It was treated like a coffee table for the backyard lounge furniture of the rest of the year. He was like, "This is a gift from the Blanks!"

I had a bass guitar by a brand called Mako. It had the most arthritis-inducing action ever. I demolished it in some impromptu on-air noisejam one dark night. I bled all over it, and the coils kept recessing into one of the pickups. The tape of it sounded rad enough to release, but then it went up in flames when my car was set on fire at a house-show. Now we will never be famous for our flail-all-at-once masturbation.

Now I have a drumkit that is by Peavy. People often look at it quizzically: "Peavy makes drums?" Hey, I also had a tennis racket made by Yamaha!

The gun was never actually brought out, so who knows if he really had one.

back in the early 90s my dad was at his shop and this fuckin guy comes in with somethin pokin out of his shirt.  he says "i have a gun. give me all the money." my dad looks at him and says "no you dont. show me the gun!" the dude starts gettin upset and yellin "i have a gun!" but my dad just kept sayin "show me the gun!" eventually the dude just fuckin snapped and ran out.  later that night he returned after we were closed and broke in.  after totally dismantling the door knob off and prying open the fuckin register, he found the mere 50 bucks we leave in there every night.  he was so upset he threw the fuckin register through the front window and ran out.  the cops caught the fuckin guy a block away.

NAME BRAND cheapo 60's Vox guitar, converted to fretless for some reason by the guy I bought it off. Pretty useless overall - nearly impossible to play and the pickups are super quiet. I suppose I could get the neck re-fretted and the pickups re-wound, but that seems like a lot of work and money just to get a shitty-but-cool guitar.

I have an Epiphone Les Paul Junior and I went to my friend's house about a week ago and when I went in his room I saw a guitar bag and I went to open it up and saw "Les Paul Jr." on the headstock and was like "Oh shit, you got the same guitar as me!" I pulled it out and it was like 1/2 scale of mine. That kid is pretty small and it still looks like a baby guitar for him.

There's a semi-interesting story about Go Buddy.
About 4 years ago my mom calls me and tells me there is this guitar at an antique store near her house that is only 100 bucks and it looks all something I'd be in to.
I go up to Tin City Antiques and check it out.  I'm baffled by it and buy it on the spot.
Nobody could figure out what kind of guitar it was.  I was sure it was a Hagstrom, other people thought it was a Teisco or possibly an EKO, and if they were a fucking idiot they'd think it was a  Harmony.
So, everyone was clueless and nobody could agree on what it was.
My friend Brendon lost his job shortly after I bought it and decided his new goal in lfe was to find out what kind of guitar it was.  He took tons of pictures of it and sent them to different vintage guitar websites.  I think it was either myrareguitars.com or some place that responded with a for sure answer.  They mailed him a picture of a guitar almost the exact same, the only difference was that it only had two picks ups, not two groups of two for mother fucking humbucking!  I had some rare deluxe version of an already rare guitar.
So... the guitar is a Guyatone from the mid 60s.
It sounds kind of shitty but I still use it.  It's always my back up at shows.

There are some decent larrivee models that are fairly reasonable used and sound like much more expensive guitars.  I have one that would be perfect other than the neck being a bit too thin.  Still, it was worth it for the money.

I have the exact same guitar! I got it off of craigslist for $75.

Two of my room mates used to work at the larivee factory. I don't know if I'd trust a guitar they built.

That story sounds like a load of bullshit to me. First the guy said the guitar was left perched on top of another guitar case and later it is inside the case? And then he explains that lightning traveled through his drywall? And whats the point in selling it? "It was struck by lightning!" "Yeah but its unplayable and needs a shitload of work" "But it was struck by lightning" Some fuckhead just wants to recoup on his loss it what it sounds like to me. As to what did that, I bet he either left it near a source of flame or something, but this is highly dubious to me. If he was asking less for it I might believe that halfheartedly, but not for no $1300...

The opening bid was $795. The $1300 is because of those bidding on it.

Also, I doubt placing a guitar near a flame would cause the bottom of the neck to blow out like it did.

You can get a re-issue of these for around $500  (I paid $550 with tax for mine). Although for some odd reason the '90's reissues go for around $900 (at least the ones I've seen). Maybe since the economy is a toilet you can procure one for less.

I found a 1964 Teisco MJ-2L electric guitar on kijiji for $275. Is that a fair price? I've done a few searches online,
checking completed listings on ebay and harmony-central reviews, but I'm still not sure.

The Eastwood Hi-Flyers are great.  Buzzsaw tone, looks cool, solid as a rock.  The only problems are that the P-90s they have in there squeal like crazy and its a bit on the heavy side.  But a friend of mine used to own a genuine Mosrite and said that the Eastwood was a better guitar (wider neck, less flimsy).

Does anyone have the link that someone posted in another thread to the guitar guy (I think he was in the Bay Area) who made parts? I think he had a Firebird style pickup that I wanna order and throw into the neck position on my Telecaster.

I have an Epiphone Les Paul Junior

As long as your dragging up old shit here, I recently had a new hole routed into one of these and stuck a P-90 in the neck position. Replaced the tone pot with a blend pot for pick up selection.

Nice. How's it sound?

I've been thinking about getting a new one to finally make an NES Paul.

I'm not crazy about the blend pot. Thinking of doing independent volumes with a push/pull for series/parallel, just the fuck of it.

This thread makes me want to post a picture of me and my NAME BRAND GUITAR but I don't have any good action shots. Is a Gibson from 1966 still a name brand guitar if it's only a Melody Maker?

Got a Seagull SM-12 acoustic with a hardcase for $200 on eBay. Guess this was a product of shipping, because it wasn't in the pictures:

Dude I bought it from has been on there since '99 and has ~400 transactions with 100% feedback. Hopefully he can do something about it.

You're lucky if you've owned a Classic Vibe Telecaster. Always wanted one of those since they originally came out in 2008. Got a Duo-Sonic since they were cheaper. Duo-Sonic is cool and all, not gonna lie. Sort of an odd Fender short scale sound you're not gonna hear anywhere else. Always regretted not buying the Telecaster. It's literally 10 years later and one of my biggest regrets despite owning legit Fenders that should be better or take my mind things. No! I still want the Squier. I remember when the white Classic Vibe Tele came out and remember thinking it wasn't as legit as the first Butterscotch model. 2008!

The new Epiphone Les Paul Special with the p-90's is 150 bucks, and one of the best guitars I have ever played in my life. I played one at the guitar store the other day and thought I was Johnny Thunders. Killer tone. Disgusting growl. Just FYI for the punks.
