Coming off the wings of one of the most ridiculous monetary transactions I've ever been party to, I thought it might be handy for similarly inclined slumming Termbo'ers to put together a list of CD's (dollar bin and otherwise) that change hands on ebay for the mega-green. Who still finds validation in owning an 'original' CD is anybody's guess (maybe middle-age luddites), nevertheless, even though the format is officially on the decline doesn't change the patent fact that people still pay out big for 'em. This is in by no means a complete list; mainly, it's just things that I've found or tried to find and seen go for ludicrous sums. If this list seems heavily power pop/college rock-centric, that's no accident, as the majority of these acts fell between the chronological cracks of the first death of vinyl and and the first wave of 90's CD reissues. Keep your eyes peeled in fleamarkets, Virgin and Wherehouse and stick it to dad!
Artful Dodger: S/T, Honor Among Thieves (Sony Special Products, 1997) - $50 and up
The Producers : S/T/You Make The Heat (Sony Special Products, 2000) - $75 and up
Game Theory: Big Shot Chronicles, Real Nighttime, Two Steps, Distortion Of Glory (Alias Records, 1994) - $30 - $50 and up
Nick Lowe: Labour Of Lust (Sony 1990, Demon, 1995) - $50 and up
The Lotus Eaters: No Sense Of Sin (Vinyl Japan, 2005) - $80 and up
The Hudson Bros: So You Are A Star: The Best Of The Hudson Brothers (Varese Sarabande, 1995) - $40 and up
The Paley Brothers: S/T (WEA Japan, 2004) - $80 and up
Rhino D.I.Y: Come Out And Play: American Power Pop Vol 1., 1975 - 1978 (Rhino/WEA, 1993) - $30 and up
The Embarrassment: Heyday: 1979 - 1983 (Bar-None, 1995) - $30 and up
The Left Banke: There's Gonna Be A Storm: The Complete Recordings (Polygram, 1994) - $50 and up
The Plimsouls: The Plimsouls...Plus (Rhino, 1992) - $30 and up
20/20 - S/T / Look Out! (Oglio, 1995) - $30 and up
-
anybody know of any others they've seen go for big bucks with mom and dad, feel free to slap 'em up there.
-
I kick myself now for selling that Left Banke CD; I got it in a trade and this was around when it came out, so it was only about $15.99 or something
-
Yeah, some of these are really stupid. You can still find that Left Banke CD in a lot of straight-leg mainstream CD outlets (same story with much of this list). These prices mainly reflect the blunted instant-gratification of the point-and-click net-shopper. I mean, there is absolutely NO reason that 20/20 CD should run ANYONE any more than 6 or 7 bucks. ...but it is does. And it's cos people wanna log on, cart up and check out. Take 'em for everything they're worth I say.
There's plenty more of these and I hope other folks contribute. I'm sure a lot of UK and NZ post-punk stuff falls into a similar crack.
-
yeah, tell me about it; I used to have not only that 2-on-1 CD of the first two 20/20 records (which I paid $4 for a brand new promo copy of), but I had the vinyl of them too and one day I sold them all like a moron
-
here's a good one that's a pretty known entity:
the dolly mixture - demonstration tapes cd.
1000 copies printed. i was keeping an eye on this for a potential trade; it topped $250 repeatedly.
-
The Embarrassment: Heyday: 1979 - 1983 (Bar-None, 1995) - $30 and up
Worth every dollar. I don't think anything on the 2nd CD is available on vinyl.
-
Nig-Heist 2xcd on Drag City
Flipper - Generic cd
and a million more
-
PS
One of my favorite cd selling expeirence so far was getting 40$ for the Mr. Epp collection
-
Nig-Heist 2xcd on Drag City
Flipper - Generic cd
I used to have that Nig Heist too, but I dion't remember liking it very much; and I had the vinyl of the Flipper, which I really wish I hadn't sold
-
I sold some OOP Nomeansno CDs on At for $50+ a while back. The Cows "Old Gold" CD on AmRep usually tops $50 or so too. A lot AmRep CDs have been peaking in the $30 range lately. By best CD sale was some Tortoise collection for $125 or so years ago.
-
Electrocutes for $40
Lewd discog on Chuckie-Boy for $50
Child Molesters on SFTRI for $50
Desert Sessions Vol One for $90 (that was low too)
-
i've seen the "chains & black exhaust" comp cd top $200 on ebay.
-
Child Molesters on SFTRI for $50
I've got one of these in perfect condition if anybody wants to buy it; I never liked it much
-
Nig-Heist 2xcd on Drag City
Flipper - Generic cd
and a million more
Forgot about that Flipper. I've got both 'Generic' and the 'Sex Bomb Baby' CD. Feed the fire!
-
Similar to the Left Banke situation:
Them: The Story Of Them (Polygram, 1997) - $50
A lot of Castle/Sanctuary releases are going up in price as well, as I think was already mentioned since they're now defunct. One of the pricier ones I know is the Flying Machine - Flight Recorder CD which is like $100.
-
I know there's a lot of hip hop CDs, esp. early 90s stuff, that people pay tons of ebay $ for. The only one I can think of right now is Runaway Slave by Showbiz and AG but I know that there are more.

-
Sun City Girls - Torch of the Mystics $50 and up
The Dead C. - Trapdoor Fucking Exit $40
1st Sonic Youth CD used to go for over $100. Don't know if it's worth much since the re-issue.
-
once noticed that
Accused - Return of Martha Splatter
sold on ebay for 160$
DAMN!
-
Lewd discog on Chuckie-Boy for $50
Child Molesters on SFTRI for $50
I have like 250 cds or so boxed up. I know those are in there.
I mentioned the Smiths-loving record store clerk that had a crush on me when I was a youngster a while back. He gave me soooo many cds.
-
Damn, I tried to edit that cuz the posts are all wide, but it's Daniel's fault, I think.
I bet some of that cd-only 90s stuff (SFTRI and all that) might get ridiculous.
-
Right now its SFTRI vinyl that is potentially nutso, since it is all technically o/p and who the hell is gonna repress these days for some of these records?
Next, the CDs start blowing up.
If you ever see the Spaceman 3's "For all the Fucked up Children" that's been o/p for going on a decade.
-
those rap cds are nuts!
-
how about... (I own copies of all these myself)
Fad Gadget- Fireside Favourites for about $50-75 (I had forgotten it was that expensive now)
v/a- Got A Good Thing Going: 25 R&B Radio Hits Of the 60s for about $50 (I haven't looked recently, but mine was $3 at Goodwill)
Legendary Pink Dots- Stone Circles: A Legendary Pink Dots Anthology starting at $45 (mine was $2.50, again from Goodwill)
Wire- Behind the Curtain: Early Versions 1977 & 78 all the way from $33-120 (I paid $83 for mine, but it's perfect and I love it; should've waited though)
-
that wire 'behind the curtain' is totally incredible; it should be reissued.
something boggles my mind about paying this much for CDs; i guess i'm a vinyl snob and still see CDs as essentially disposable copies.
people have been paying big bucks for game theory CDs for years now - why doesn't someone just step in and reissue them? i had 3 or 4 copies of 'lolita nation' on 2LP back in college cause I found them for $3 each; no one seems to care about the vinyl now. what a great great great album.
-
Accused - Return of Martha Splatter
sold on ebay for 160$
DAMN!
The CD!?! The vinyl record goes for 100$ - I don't get it.
-
PiL, Plastic Box - $100 and up
...am I letting too much of my roots show with this list? I've got this and I need to sell it. The Peel Sessions fucking rule though.
-
Lewd discog on Chuckie-Boy for $50
Are you fucking serious? More than half of this CD is unlistenable crap. I am selling this tomorrow if this is true.
Richie: You found independant buyers for those Nomeansno CDs, right? I've been tempted to put them on the Bay, but I really can't see anyone paying $50 for "0 + 2 = 1" and the like on there.
What route do you folks go? eBay? Gemm.com listings? Amazon?
-
Nah, I sold those on Ebay. This was probably four or five years ago maybe, when they were still deleted from the AT catalog. I think some of that stuff may have been reissued since then by the band?
A lot of people say Amazon is great for selling CDs and getting better prices than eBay.
-
Wilie D, from the Geto Boys, first solo album on cd - Controversy goes for $60-$100.
Great cd, but as far as I can remember the insert is just one page.
Poor Righteous Teachers 3rd (?) album on cd - New World Order - goes for around the same
-
Rock Dis Funky Joint
Trenton Makes the World Takes
-
The KMD CD is/was going for big bucks too.
-
Sold "Bruce Lee Marvin Gaye" cd by MILK CULT for $94 a coupla years back.
-
The idiocy continues:
Holly & The Italians, The Right To Be Italian - $30 and up
Explain that.
-
Thought of this thread today when I was record shopping. Came across the Soft Boys 1976-81 double disc on Ryko. Assumed I could get more selling it than the $9 I paid. Looks like it goes for an average of $25 to $35. Not bad at all. But I like the Soft Boys. Ahh, screw it. I'll just rip it and sell.
-
Accused - Return of Martha Splatter
sold on ebay for 160$
DAMN!
The CD!?! The vinyl record goes for 100$ - I don't get it.
100$? I'm thinking more like 15-30$
-
Tad CD's go for a lot of money apparently. The Salt Lick/God's Balls CD is being sold on Half.com for like $75-$100. That's ridiculous. There's gotta be tons of that CD around.
Meanwhile, the Infrared Ridinghood CD, which has been OOP since weeks after it came out is only like $5 or something.
-
I sold some OOP Nomeansno CDs on At for $50+ a while back. The Cows "Old Gold" CD on AmRep usually tops $50 or so too. A lot AmRep CDs have been peaking in the $30 range lately. By best CD sale was some Tortoise collection for $125 or so years ago.
Don't forget the silly Peacetika CD that went for over $100.
I just saved a Halo Of Flies CD from are $1bins yesterday. Fools.
Killdozer goes quick for $20 at work...who knows on the web?
Unsane Live in Japan CD I bought in a cut out bin went for $60 something a few years back.
The Story of THEM 2xCD set is easy $50-$75 right now. I sold a scuffed copy for $50+ and the guy was happy.
-
My dad's got that 'Story of Them' double cd and probably never listens to it due to bein swamped by new CD reissues of rare pych and acid folk... I shouldnt have returned it when I borrowed it.
Isn't that Crisis 'We are all German Jews' double-cd worth quite a lot?
-
What about the live Devo CD that Ryko did? Does that go for big buxxx?
-
Anything on Man's Ruin, ANY format, gets money except the obviously crap stuff. And even the singles that were bargain binners for years can occasionally top $20 now.
-
And just to show that this is no shit:

Holly & The Italians, The Right To Be Italian - $30 and up
Explain that.
They've never been to a record store and seen the piles of this thing in the dollar bin?
-
Jesus!
-
COC "Eye For An Eye" is a consistent $30-40 seller, and occasionally upwards of $60. Also somewhat common, hence my mention. Definitely gone through a few of those.
My personal WTF of eBay CD selling was the "World's Finest Hardcore" CD boot of Neos/Necros/Sick Pleasure/Clitboys/etc. 7"s for $138.
-
GAH--I've still got both of those...for now. I bet my early cd boot of the first six Revelation 7"s would be gold, too.
-Ryan
-
i think the CD of Wall of Voodoo's Dark Continent goes for some loot
yup, one up on bay with three days left for 62 dollars
and Klark Kent on CD too.

I've seen that Accused "Return.." CD on Combat go for $250+ but that was before the recent reissue.
I've never seen the Holly and The Italians CD in a dollar bin anywhere but it was still in print up to a few years ago.
-
I saw that Accused CD on ebay today for $16.99 BIN, but I don't know if it's a reissue; I know nothing about that band
-
Flipper - Generic cd
gaaaah, lost this one in a move. still a sore subject.
-
The rare rap CD game is intense. Germans are all over that shit.
-
those jap boots from the 90s rake in good dough
gism
gauze

that's hilarious, we sell those for $12-13 a pop and the guy who makes 'em sells to stores all over the U.S.
-
Nearly all the Roky Erickson cd's from the 90's fetch pretty big bucks too. legit stuff and boots.
-
To borrow from an annoying gin commercial.

Emmit Rhodes, Listen, Listen: The Best Of (1995, Varese Sarabande): $50
Emmit Rhodes, Daisy-Fresh From Hawthorne: The Best Of The Dunhill Years (1998, Edsel): $50
-
Sadistic Mika Band- s/t/ Black Ships 2-on-1 CD
starts at $40 and going up to $75, although someone else has one for just over $10 (?!); I looked this up tonight out of curiosity because I was listening to it earlier- I bought mine about a year after it came out and, since I worked at the shop I bought it at, it only cost me $4.50 or something for a promo copy that I doubt had been played
I thoought these folks were kind of obscure in the States, even if my LP of Black Ships is actually American!
-
I got a copy of that Sadistic Mika Band recently for like 8 bucks, regular used CD price. It is out of print, though.
-
The Golden Dawn- Power Plant on Sunspots is going for a hundred dollars on Amazon right now; WTF?!
I only looked it up because I'm listening to my copy right now; I bought it new off of Amazon four years ago now (has it really been that long?!) for less than $20- it's an awesome record, sure, but not $100 worth of awesome
I bet somewhere in New York still has this thing in stock for $20 or less...

Actually if it came down to paying $100 to get this on vinyl I would in a heartbeat (but i already have it on vinyl). This is one of my favorite psych records. Sure it's a blatant 13th floor elevators ripoff but it's sooooooo good.

Not really all that obscure in the states. They did tour through here at one point in time with Roxy music. I see these albums turning up all the time at record conventions and nobody knows what they are so they're priced at $1 or $2 everytime it seems. Great records..great band!

We should probably go on and move this to the controversial thread cos I enjoy Power Plant MANY TIMES MORE than any Elevators record. Same goes for Cold Sun. Sorry. Not really.

Song for song this definitely beats the hell out of any of the elevators records for sure. I can agree with you there.
-
hardcore devo volumes on rhino..i've seen them sell close or over $100 on ebay
-
something a little off the wall...
v/a- Verschwende Deine Jugend [that's something like "Waste Your Youth" in English, sailor]
this is a fantastic compilation of German punk and NDW (German New Wave) with DAF, Hans-A-Plast, Fehlfarben, KFC, SYPH, Abwarts and many others; I was lucky enough to buy mine new for around $25 at Dusty Groove in Chicago, but now the lowest price for it on Amazon Germany is 61,90 EUR which translates to, like, $95!!
I can't understand the lyrics on here- well, the Hans-A-Plast song is half sung in English- and I can't read the booklet (or the full-length book of the same name that this was tied in with) but this is great shit!!
