The Whites by Richard Price. A lot of characters and back stories to keep in one's head but it's a good read. A lot better written than your average police procedural.

The great Steven Soderbergh directed this. Not sure who did Foxcatcher but it wasn't him. I too can't be bothered to look it up

The best Patricia Highsmith/"Ripley" movie ?

yeah, it's definetly my favorite. The recent version with John Malcovich is good too. It's a lot more faithful to the book. It's been a while since i've seen Talented Mr. Ripley but I don't remember being too impressed. Philip Seymour Hoffman was good in it though. Maybe I should revisit it.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark

I've grown out of a lot of the movies I loved when I was a kid, but this is still a favorite. I watch it at least once a year. Perfect movie. Jaws and Close Encounters are up there too.

Nice. Thanks for the heads up.

There's a huge archive with hundreds of episodes covering every conceivable topic. They're really dense, it's almost like attending a lecture at Cambridge.

War movies are sometimes as cliche ridden as westerns. I really like "Cross Of Iron" along with "The Big Red One", "Come And See" (the russian one), "Catch 22", "Apocalypse Now", "The Winter War" (the finnish one) and "All Quiet On The Western Front" (1930).

Agreed. For me the best ones are those that take a more surreal/expressionistic approach. Apocalypse Now and The Thin Red Line are good examples of this

I watched some recent purchases (see post -- Thrift Score).

The Brothers Quay -- anyone else think that these guys influenced Tool's videos like Sober? Really surreal and dark stop-motion animation stuff.

Yes. Also, the video for NIN's Closer had to be influenced by the Quays. "Street of Crocodiles" in particular.

Agreed on the Elevator arc being a bit too long. Maybe he should have saved the idea for a movie? Good season overall though. I guess we'll have to wait another year for the next one?
